I remember this as so- a normal yarn over is wrapping the yarn round anti clockwise and a ‘wrong ‘ or ‘ backwards ‘yarn over is wrapping it round clockwise.. So glad you film it so we can see and your voice isnt grating like many others seem to be.
I like your demonstration of this bind off because of how you explain that first backwards yarn over. It's my favorite bind off for toe up socks too. Thank you!
Thank you! That was a very good demonstration - so helpful. I just finished my second pair of toe-up socks and wanted a stretchier bind off. My first pair ended up being too tight at the cuff.
This is fantastic. Thank you. I've tried to master SO MANY different stretchy cast offs - tears have been shed over Italian tubular cast off and don'tget me started on anything involvinga needle! l inevitably give up in frustration. I've had to draw a picture of which way round the yarn overs should be cos apparently l do mine backwards but, this is such a quick easy method that l've mastered it first try.
Niki, this is fabulous! The face that you've mastered it on the first try is fantastic! Thank you so much for commenting and letting me know. How did you find me, by the way? -Liat
I really like the idea of the stretchiness because even when I bind off in 1x1 ribbing with needles 2 to 3 sizes up from the needle used to knit ribbing, I end up with a fixed and non-stretchy bind-off which is annoying on sleeves. Only thing that my OCD is having issues with on the method you just demonstrated is that it appears to put a purl bump at the top of a knitted column. :/
Is there a stretchy cast-on too? My attempt worked fine for binding off and I love it. But, the bind-off edge fans out from the less stretchy cast-on edge. I would like to see them more parallel.
Hi there, a great stretchy cast-on is the Chinese Waitress Cast-On: www.knitfreedom.com/blog/chinese-waitress I also have several invisible ribbed cast-ons that will match your ribbing: www.knitfreedom.com/shop/cast-ons (This is a cast-ons encyclopedia). You can preview the cast-ons here: www.knitfreedom.com/my-classes/cast-ons. I also have a bind-offs library www.knitfreedom.com/shop/bind-offs. You can get them individually or sign up for membership and access everything cheaper. Cheers!
Absolute beginner knitter here, what should I do if my first stitch for every row is a slip stitch purl-wise (for a neater edge)? Still knit it? Slip that stitch then start with the bind-off? Also, when I've practiced this bind-off, it doesn't scrunch back and instead looks like a normal knit v-shape going across. I thought I was doing everything correctly, but should I lower my needle size? Just keep practicing?
Hi Elaine, it's the same in the round and 2x2 rib is worked the same way (just for 2 knits and 2 purls). You can find more details at knitfreedom.com/jssbo
I have such a hard time with continental technique videos, is there anyway you could demonstrate both English and continental? I know, I’m a dummy, sorry, just asking.
You are so right! Back when I recorded this video I wasn't as considerate of American-Style knitters as I would have liked. Luckily I just recorded this video for an upcoming class and in it I show the technique both American and Continental Style. ruclips.net/video/U-uuFQKJDs0/видео.html
Absolutely. It's not invisible but it works very well. You can also check out other stretchy bind-offs at www.knitfreedom.com/knitting-topic/bind-offs/stretchy-ribbed-bind-offs/
Hi Stephanie! You can - as long as you're binding off the yarn over in pattern. For example, you can bind off the yarnovers using JSSBO as if they were regular knit or purl stitch. Thanks for the great question! If you have any more, make sure to check out our content at www.KnitFreedom.com

@@violetta40 That's true, it's part of a paid class with over 50 bind-off tutorials. But the 2x2 version of JSSBO is pretty easy to figure out on your own.
Hi Yvonne, I'm sorry to say I have no idea! I just followed the directions offered by Jeny Staiman. Even the original Knitty post doesn't explain the reason for the backwards yarnovers.
I'm just guessing cos, l have no real idea but, l think it may be because they cosy up to each other better and so fit together in a more compact way unstretched .
I have a hard time remembering which way is correct so I end up just remembering what the yarnovers look like. And the reverse yarnover on a knit takes the yarn all the way around the needle; then the normal yarn over does the same thing for the purl. So alternating them like that gives you more yarn to stretch in the bind off.
Keep trying Lily! Sometimes it takes a few times to even out your tension as you're not used to binding off the yarn-overs with the stitches. You can always rip it out and try again :) Good luck, you've got this!
Finished off my brioche knitting with it using needles 3 sizes up, it fits very well and looks pretty indeed

Good to see you again. It has been a while. Always love your videos.

Fantastic perfect bind off for the fingerless mittens I'm making and gives a lovely edge! Thank you!

Great video. I’ve done Jenny’s before ( I thought) but not like this. It was smooth to learn and went fairly quickly. Thank you!

Hi Becky,
Yay! I am so glad.
so this video has taught me that apparently I do my y/os backwards by default. Oh well!
P
Lol. Same. I've had to draw a picture of which Y/O is "backwards" and which way is "normal" cos l keep getting them muddled.
