This was SO clear and well presented. Thanks so much! I especially like how you go at a slow enough pace and have enough repetition that someone can practice along without rewinding over and over. Really well done and greatly appreciated.
I’ve spent all afternoon trying to find the right video to help, without first having to switch down to 1 x 1 rib. Your pace and clarity is awesome. Thank you so much!!!
This is the only instruction I’ve found on the internet that describes exactly what to do with a 2x2 rib that is stretchy. I’m knitting my first sweater and needed a good example that was slow and easy to follow. Thank you! the only thing I had to go elsewhere for was how to handle this in the round.
thanks for your tutorial I found that adding little numbers to the written scheme has helped me a lot in knowing where to stab. also, I like your voice a lot :)
I need you to be my friend! I have been knitting for 13 years now and so I think I'm good at knitting, then I find out about someone who truly is! I admire you, thank you so much for sharing this method. I always find myself hating the bind offs on my sweaters, but I am loving this one!
Hooray! So glad to know it! I learned this from an illustrated/written tutorial in Interweave magazine many years ago, and it was SO difficult to figure out! I'm glad the video made it easier. You can also do JSSBO on 2x2 rib and it's super stretchy and a lot easier (but not invisible).
I can't tell you how many times I've tried this and walked away with a bad attitude. Lol. I watched your video, and still kept getting lost. I put it down and came back, watched again, and finally got the hang of it. Thank you for what you do. And congrats on Baby Girl!!
Thank you so much! This bind-off is definitely tough. I have a 2x2 invisible bind-off that I like much better - here it is: www.knitfreedom.com/knitting-video/kitchener-double-rib-bind-off/
Thank you! This has been the best tutorial for 2x2. I watched this a million times and kept practicing till I got it, and was able to bind off the sleeves and hem of my Cardi. My only issue was I used 2 strands (mohair and fingering) and it kept getting tangled with the hem bind off since it was so long,😂 Thank you and I will refer to this video again with my next sweater!😍😍🧶
Perfect finish for my 334 stitch border on my completely reversible Chanticleer Cardigan by Sarah Fama. First 50 stitches off and looks super, totally pumped, 💪🏻!
This video was so helpful! After using the 1 x 1 sewn bind off for a sweater, I fell in love with the finished look and can’t stand the typical bind off for my mitts, sweaters, etc. But I was stumped for a 2 x 2. This was perfect!!
This was great! I just branched out to learning 2k 2p for the rib stitch. Was just going to finish it up with the hopping over knit ending, but found this video. Just the right pacing where I could do one maneuver and then pause, try the next and pause. Had to undo it the first go-round but the 2nd turned out alright. Awesome! Thanks so much for helping me learn something new!
@elainebos You can just use the tail of the yarn to sew the end of the bind-off to the beginning stitches and even up the edge so that the beginning and end are invisible.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I didn't want to learn it (just wanted to do it mindlessly), but your method got through and I memorized it. And thank you for not putting ads in so that I could rewind/watch as needed without losing my place by being distracted 🌠🙏💖
Hi Zoe, thanks so much for your sweet comment! I'm glad you found my videos. They're good for when you just want to follow along and not learn, I totally get that. But if you can learn without effort, too, that's even better! And you're welcome for no ads. I just can't conscience placing ads in a device that is meant for learning. I'm glad you appreciate it. Come to www.knitfreedom.com/ anytime to continue your learning and to get free tips in your email. Hugs!
wow! great video. it was much easier because i was familiar with your 1x1 invisible bind off (just used it yesterday). i wish i had followed your advice and practiced it first, but i was too impatient. i only had to take it out a couple of times, not too bad. i'm grateful for your instructions and also that you explain where you should be at with each stitch, it helped me when i forgot where i was. thanks!
1) Purl OFF the first purl st, and knit the next purl st. 2) Knit the knit st after that (the third st, the one you already purled into during setup), and then purl the second knit st (4th st) just to the left of it 3) Purl OFF the second purl st, and push off the 3rd st (the first knit) 4) Skip one st to the left to knit into the first next purl st (the 5th st) 5) Then knit OFF the second knit st (the 4th st), 6) Skip two stitches to purl into the first next knit stitch (the original 7th st)
I know what you mean :) If your rib starts off with purl stitches, I would just bind them off the regular way - like, purl 2, pass 1 over - until you get to a position where you are starting with knit stitches. Does that make sense?
If you're starting with 2 purl stitches, when you purl 2 pass 1 over what about the 1 other stitch that will still be on your right hand needle before the 2 knit stitches?
also, the stitch is pretty easy to undo if you take the needle off and pull the thread with a crochet. I had to do this because the first time I did it, I didn't pull strong enough and it ended up pretty loose, which didn't look nice.
@Wendy10910 Yep! Just make sure you don't pull your yarn too-too tight. But that's what this bind-off is for! I suggest you practice on a swatch first to get the feel for how tight you need to pull the yarn, because it's not too fun to un-do :)
@sydbap21 Thank you so much for your feedback! I didn't realize this video was hard to follow. Have you watched my video for the 1x1 ribbed bind-off? I introduce these concepts there - this is an advanced version of that video. I can also provide you more support if you post a thread in the KNITFreedom forum - knitfreedom (dot) com / forum.
Aaaand...my sock goes back into the time out bag on the bind off. That's what I get for trying a new to me bind off when I have only a bit of time before I have to leave the house. Ugh! I think this method looks like it will be good once I get the hang of it, but your description of what to do went a big fast for me. I had to pause and go back much more than I usually do.
Hi Taylor, you would do this in the round exactly the way I show here. Just start binding off as shown in the video. When you get to the last stitch in the round, use this trick to make the round join invisibly: www.knitfreedom.com/blog/bind-off-round/
Thank you for a very good tutorial! :-D I'm knitting my first sweater ever and wanted to try a "fancy" bind-off - it went very well following your instructions.
I am finishing a Pussy Cat Hat 2 x 2 ribbing - and it is very flared compared to the Cast On at the beginning of the hat. Is what you've just shown going to fix that ending Bind Off?
Seems to me that the two setup stitches are the last two steps of the "pattern". Also, she said that every stitch has to be gone into the first time "opposite-ways", before jumping off the needle the "same-ways". So I would start with - knit into the first purl stitch - skip ahead 2 stitches to purl into the first knit stitch Then: (next comment, out of characters)
The darker blue swatch at the beginning of your video ends with a purl stitch. I am specifically looking for instruction for a stretchy, invisible stitch that BEGINS with the ending purl stitch, instead of beginning with a knit stitch. Thus, I found the video disappointing when I saw you begin with a knit stitch. Everyone starts with the knit stitch, but it seems no one will start the instruction with the purl stitch.
This is awesome - thanks a lot! It definitely took me a few tries, and the yarn I'm using isn't as stretchy (I'm using cotton - not a very functional bind-off, but aesthetically pleasing), but it turns out really nicely.
I had trouble following the first time through - she's a bit too chatty to the point of distraction. After I wrote the steps on paper, then I paused the video after the first set and finished using just my written instructions. Much easier the second time through.
You'll see that steps 5 and 6 are the same as the setup stitches! This is basically EXACTLY what Liat did, but reversed entirely. I hope that helps! :)
Liat, you are a genius! The other 2x2 bind off vids I've seen all have a row of twisted sts where the knitter converts from 2x2 to1x1 rib and that seems to me like it would tighten up the fabric - not what I want on the tops of my socks. Do you have a vid anywhere that shows this tubular BO in the round? I want to see how you connect the end to the beginning. Thanks!
@tine272727 Thank you so much! It's always good to practice first, but I understand wanting to jump right in. :) I'm so glad that my instructions have been helpful to you! Visit knitfreedom (dot) com anytime for other videos and information that might help you along the way. :) Happy Knitting!
@larauk05 I'm so glad my video could help you! :) You can always visit knitfreedom (dot) com for more advice, patterns, and videos that could definitely be helpful for you! Enjoy!
My goodness, all this back and forth explanation makes this hard to follow. I wish she would just do the steps and stop backtracking and explaining every thought! This channel has interesting techniques, but terrible videos. Frankly, it is MUCH easier to learn this if you just turn off the sound.
Hi Meeta, thank you so much! I agree, this bind-off is not the easiest. For 2x2 rib, I would recommend JSSBO for 2x2 rib (www.knitfreedom.com/knitting-video/jenys-surprisingly-stretchy-bind-off-for-2x2-rib) or, my favorite, the Kitchener Double-Rib Bind-Off (www.knitfreedom.com/knitting-video/kitchener-double-rib-bind-off). I hope this helps!
I usually like your videos but this one is not helpful for me anyway. I find it extremely confusing because your unhelpful little written out instructions do not specify what order the steps are done in that you don't say whether it is the next stitch you purl into or the one 2 over. I try to find my way back in the video and I just find it is a mixed up confusing mess and I am ripping out what I have been sitting here for an hour and a half trying to do. I am not a new knitter, I have done many bind offs and followed many instructions successfully. I feel your video is very confusing and I am just mad at time wasted. Sometimes you skip 2 stitches to purl, sometimes you purl into the next one, your instructions are so vague and confusing I am very frustrated. I just want to slap you. You need to talk less with needless chatter.
This was SO clear and well presented. Thanks so much! I especially like how you go at a slow enough pace and have enough repetition that someone can practice along without rewinding over and over. Really well done and greatly appreciated.

Thank you som much Knitfreedom!

Thank you so much for such a detailed tutorial. It helped me finish my Suri Shirt and saved me so much frustration. Great job!
That's great news! I'm so happy! Thanks for your comment.

Yay! Thanks for letting me know, that's so great. Hugs!

great video! the talking is relevant and the pace is good. thank you.

5) Then knit OFF the second knit st (the 4th st),
6) Skip two stitches to purl into the first next knit stitch (the original 7th st)
What? That's very confusing with no reference.

Thank you, this bind off would be perfect for neckbands of sweaters. Also for ribbed watch caps knitted top down
Guess I’ll never try to do that. 🤣
This is excellent, thanks for posting! My first jumper has an appropriately stretchy neck hole thanks to you
also, the stitch is pretty easy to undo if you take the needle off and pull the thread with a crochet. I had to do this because the first time I did it, I didn't pull strong enough and it ended up pretty loose, which didn't look nice.
first the setup, knit purl in the 3rd stich, then it a knit push. why not go purlvise trough the 2next and a knit, instead of purl purl knit?
@KannD86 I'm so glad that the video could help you figure out the bind-off! :) You're very welcome!
@Wendy10910 Yep! Just make sure you don't pull your yarn too-too tight. But that's what this bind-off is for! I suggest you practice on a swatch first to get the feel for how tight you need to pull the yarn, because it's not too fun to un-do :)

I'd love some advice on how to bind off on a 3 x 3 ribbing. Love your videos.
Love your videos. Can you show us how to convert a knit pattern so that it can be worked in the round.
I have been trying to figure out this bind-off forever! Thank you so much for this video!
How would you start this in the round? Can it be done with a jogless join?
Hi Taylor, you would do this in the round exactly the way I show here. Just start binding off as shown in the video. When you get to the last stitch in the round, use this trick to make the round join invisibly: www.knitfreedom.com/blog/bind-off-round/
Thank you for a very good tutorial! :-D I'm knitting my first sweater ever and wanted to try a "fancy" bind-off - it went very well following your instructions.

I don't understand how I'm supposed to end my cast off if I only have two stitches left. I have 34 stitches total.
I had trouble following the first time through - she's a bit too chatty to the point of distraction. After I wrote the steps on paper, then I paused the video after the first set and finished using just my written instructions. Much easier the second time through.
You can say that again - chatty. Your advice regarding writing down is priceless. But otherwise, great tutorial.
othervise i really do like your voice and the well shown how to do it.
This is a great video! Thank you for posting!!! Do you happen to have one for 4x4 rib?
arugh now i find this, after using another technique which worked but this follows the sts exactly. Thanks will save this vid for future use. Thanks!
Liz, thanks for your comment - we’re glad you’ll be able to try out the 2x2 invisible rib for your next bind off. Happy Knitting!
Oh noooo! I just did a whole cardigan doing it the way where you convert 2x2 into 1x1 first. Will add this one to my favourites for future use!
Very nice
My favourite
...is this stretchy enough for socks?
You'll see that steps 5 and 6 are the same as the setup stitches! This is basically EXACTLY what Liat did, but reversed entirely. I hope that helps! :)
Thank uou for sharing. Nice work.
This is a little like the dreaded Kitchner stitch.... I'm not crazy about that either lol But the results are really really nice.
@TheSalami123 Sure, I'll add that to my list of videos to make!
Liat, you are a genius! The other 2x2 bind off vids I've seen all have a row of twisted sts where the knitter converts from 2x2 to1x1 rib and that seems to me like it would tighten up the fabric - not what I want on the tops of my socks. Your fourth step on your written cheat sheet should read "purl off, knit." Yes?
Thank you, it is very helpful
Спасибо большое!!! Научилась!
you forever lost me into the fourth minute, i don't know if i'm suppose to knit 3 then do it again, very confusing, but thanks for trying!
@2lingfong You are so welcome! I'm glad you like it. :)
Gostei muito do tutorial! Teria como adicionar legendas em português ou espanhol?
Obrigada! Não tenho legendas mas si você tem os posso adicionar :)
thank you
