I find it hilarious with how much technology has developed in the past 3 decades, and how CGI has barely improved since then.
To my opinion Jurassic park & Starship troopers were so ahead of their time in FX it still blows my mind
Yeah I saw this movie in the theaters when it was released. Really underrated gem.
It helps that the background was real (instead of green screen) and they heavily used real practical effects intead of relying solely on CGI. Some of the closeup shots of the bugs were done with real life models and animatronics. Jurassic Park also used a combination of CGI + real models/animatronics (IIRC, they made animatronic models of Velociraptors and most of the T-Rex).
Also why the first Star Wars movies aged so well. A mix of animatronics with cgi only for wide shots or space shots. Lots of miniatures too!
They played to the strengths of early CGI. Movies around that time with bad CGI didn’t, making common mistakes like using it in dimly lit scenes and having glossy reflections.

@@shaskusmasso I watched it again, and this might shock you: where Rico’s gun is pointed and where that blood splattered appeared *do not line up!*
That said, your point does stand. At best, Rico shot him in the right lung and at worst the liver. So you’re right, the LT probably didn’t have kind thoughts about Rico in his last moments down that bug’s gullet
LT didn't really need to die, could have tourniqueted him and get him to medical

But in the beginning of the movie we see someone from MI missing both his legs, and the LT didn't get a mechanical arm until he was back in action, so I'm guessing he just didn't want to go through the rest of his life missing the majority of his limbs. There is also the possibility that the femoral arties pulled back too far to tournequit or possibly even clamp since the amputations occurred very close to the waist.
Actually, what he did NOT want was to be a legless stump for the rest of his life. Rather die in battle, with honor.

I like how everything was included in helldivers including shriekers doing damage after they die and land on you
The special effects still holds up, but the directing and pacing is way ahead of modern movies, which is why these scenes are still amazing to watch

There was just so many bugs. The warrior bugs were even using dead bugs as ladders and stepping stones. They didn't have enough firepower and the right kind of firepower.

Remember seeing this on LaserDisc in Dolby Digital AC-3. Love this film, so underrated and deserved a worthy sequel. The Roughnecks show wasn’t too bad.

I love this movie. I wished they showed more of the underslung shotgun being used. It would be cool if they made another film going back to klendathu and stopping the bugs once and for all.
They sort of did. There are two sequels, and the third we might consider a “conclusion”

I know there are (less than stellar) sequels but I think the point of this movie is they were absolutely going to lose this war eventually, I don't think there was any once and for all in their future.

Watched this in theaters 11 times when it release and has been one of my all time faves. The other movies sucked but this one was a masterpiece
This movie needs a proper sequel, prequel or remake.
2 sequels, 1 bad, 1 passable but not as good as the first. And a remake? Not with modern Hollywood, no way.
There are 4 sequels. They are all pretty schlocky, but definitely fun. If you haven't seen then I'd recommend watching them.
My takeaway from this comment is 'proper'. You will not get that in current Hollywood... saying that, you are not wrong.

So this movie from the mid 90s has better special effects than some modern movies in 2024
Off the charts action, suspense, and adventure, without a single cute quip or inside joke to ruin the tension. What actual action film making once was.
Capable of interplanetary travel but using regular guns... makes perfect sense
They have energy weapons in the extended lore but they were expensive and not as reliable as the Morita Smart Rifles. Keep in mind in the books and other media the troopers are supposed to have visors to assist in targeting but they were dumped for the movies because the actor' s breathing kept on fogging them up the screen.
Problem is there was just WAY too many bugs, and just like in the movie they were easily overwhelmed. Only thing that would stop and onslaught like that would be heavy ordnance.
