I don't know whether to quit the podcast or start an academy of podcasts in order to give Caitie a life time achievement award just for that background, lmao. Brilliant.

I’m so happy you mentioned dissociation because that is exactly what I play RPGs for; the absolute immersion into the game. I have body dysphoria big time so dissociating as my male Shepard or my male Inquisitor Lavellan or other RPG protagonists helps with that, but the one thing that is perhaps missing in this conversation is moderation. Yes, I play games for what is considered a mentally unhealthy reason, but I maintain a job, my college career, and my social life. Granted, my social life is entirely online, but it is still managed. I handle what is around me to a satisfied degree, then just turn the world off. For a couple hours, I am Commander Shepard, or Inquisitor Lavellan, or the Sole Survivor of Vault 111. But I keep everything else in check first.
Also my comfy game is no doubt Fallout 4, but nothing feels like home quite like Mass Effect.

Wow I'd never thought about you guys tackling this topic but I'm so glad you did! Adding in my own anecdote, when I went through a really hard time, I spent almost every day playing Mass Effect. I didn't neglect my life, but playing as Commander Shepard, this buff, tough, confidence woman, gave me a sense of control and power when I had none in my real life. In that sense, it was a bit of escapism, though not to a dissociative level, like Caitie was mentioning. For a long time Mass Effect was my "comfort game" and then it became Inquisition. Definitely something interesting to think about and should be discussed more. Great pod

I have played over 760hrs over just 2 characters. To be honest I escape in this world. When I adventure with Dorian and Cass and I go help people it's amazing and makes me feel important to be honest and that people care about my opinion.. I don't have a great home life by any stretch of the imagination or a good childhood. Spent alot of time with G.I. Joe's and digging trenches in my yard and talking to myself while I played.. I've been told I have a problem with video games and I don't know maybe it's bad to look for a sense of belonging in a video game to then give myself real world validation but I feel it's actually in this world I get to help and make a difference and people I care about don't die unless I let it happen.. nothing bad happens in this world that I can't atleast try to make better if not resolve completely.. I feel so many different emotions playing this game and I tbh will never get tired of this world. Or this podcast 🤙

This is a late reply, but I wanted to say, I enjoyed this talk. Though, on ADHD, as someone with ADHD, I gotta say: the fearmongering on our medication, and a lot of mental health medication in general, is greatly overstated. For me personally, it resulted in me not getting treated for the 15 or so years it took me to finish high school ( and then some ), as well as gave me a multitude of issues on top of it.
Now that means I am on antidepressants and ADHD meds, but for the first time in over 15 years, I can organize my own life, solve my own problems, and hold down a job.
I am sure some people have awful experiences, and the extreme ones are always the ones you'll hear about the most, because those of us who are just living our lives don't care to write a report on it. Perhaps we should, though, if it would mean there are less people who live so miserably for decades as I did.

I am a recovering drug and alcohol addict and can relate to video game addiction. The thing about addiction is, that whatever you are addicted to, you obsess about it. I used to play a video game from the time I got up till maybe the next day or so. That effected my health to no end. With drugs it causes more problems, the person don't pay bills, and ends up on the streets. In all addiction is never good.

    Great episode as usual, guys.
I get pretty fired up when teachers are blamed for the ADHD crisis, since I am involved in schools myself. Curriculum demands and class sizes really hurt teachers’ abilities to coach the kids through attention issues, but I have known teachers to go above and beyond to help kids with their mental health. However, I also have to remember that the education system in the States has issues that other areas don’t. I might be seeing something in my country’s school system that is very different from the US.
    Love the background!

      @GhilDirthalen 6 лет назад

These are good points! I should have said so in the video, but a lot of school systems I've had to work with have really low ratings locally, which leads to a lot of frustration. Lots of issues. From what I've seen, the ADHD crisis seems to be Therapists/Doctors/Teachers/Parents all pointing fingers at each other, and I think the reality is somewhere in between. There are totally great teachers out there who really help kids, but I see them so often dropping out of the business as a whole in favor for something that is less stressful and pays better, and the crappy teachers staying because they make it an easy, terrible job. At least, that's USA. :/

Flight sims actually can count for up to 30% of flight time for a pilots license, and a few big name flight schools have the full cockpit flight sims to train students on before they fly a real plane, landings were emphasized at the school i went to as its a lot less damaging to crash a virtual plane than a real plane if a landing goes wrong

After graduating high school I have spent an unhealthy length of time on games. Its been about 11 years however its due to my severe depression and extreme escapism. There were times I played a game for 3 days and did not realize what day it was. Regarding games influencing violence in children I blame the parents. Now a days parents don't raise their children and give/let them do what they want so long as it keeps the children from bothering parents. A friend actually has 2 tablets for their daughter and their reasoning was I don't have time to watch them. Don't have children if you're not prepared. Another example is my niece. Her mother wanted children and after having 1 she wanted to party...she has 3 and the youngest knew what sex is in extreme detail by 7. By 10 I found out she had been playing visual novels with the 18+ content. She's 13 now. Failure of parenting.

I have questions about the trucking simulators. Do they have simulators where you're just driving a normal car? And how similar is it to actually driving? Do you still have to follow traffic laws and stuff? I got in a car crash and have been too scared to drive for the past 8 or 9 months, and I'm wondering if it might be a good way to slowly get back into it, if it's similar to driving but I'm still in a position where I know I'm safe.

    • @GhilDirthalen
      @GhilDirthalen 6 лет назад +3

You know, I'm not sure. I was told my friend plays a couple like American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator, but he isn't sure about normal cars. What he explained, is that you should follow traffic laws, as you can get 'fined' or hurt your truck which you have to fix.
I would suggest seeing a therapist though- my bias being obvious- but if you are having fear that keeps you from driving 9 months out from the accident, that can be very serious. If you can't find a video game that's close to what you are looking for, and don't want to buy an expensive 'wheel' for your computer, maybe try to 'learn' how to drive again? Ask a friend to take a car to an empty parking lot and drive around a bit, work up to a non busy side street, so on and so forth.
Hope things get better, and good luck!

I was hoping you would go with video game addiction being comorbid.
I have chronic depression and until at 40ish got treatment, the need or compulsion to play lessened.
It has become like you mentioned sometimes I just wanna play something comfortable, like how my wife has watched Downton Abbey or game of thrones for the thousnadth time.
    Anyway, thanks.

I'm almost never the person to comment on videos, to be honest, I think I had posted 3 comments since I created this account in 6th grade. I'm a sophomore in college now. Anyways, I have an interesting point of view on gaming in general, and I'm curious if anybody would be interested to learn about it in a video like this. I would prefer for people like Ghil or Jordan to maybe do another round of this topic, because I know I wouldn't do the topic justice. Here is why I might be interesting for all of you:
I am an ex-pro player in Overwatch and Call of Duty (Black Ops 2 and Ghosts).
I am a captain for an Overwatch collegiate team (top 20 in the nation)
I am heading a movement to develop an esports program at my college, and it is gaining a good bit of support, and they are very concerned about developing a culture of videogame addiction by creating this esport program.
I am Psychology/Economics double major, and I am looking to get into the gaming market, and one of the jobs I am shooting for is to be a sports psychologist with a focus on esports.
I battled depression, anxiety, and panic for the last 3 years of my life, and I only recovered less than a month ago.
Was an actual midget throughout middle school (pituitary gland deficiency, hence the name)
I fucking love Dragon Age: Inquisition.
I have been a fan of Ghil for over a year now, and I am kinda fanboying on this idea.
I know this is a stretch, but it would be awesome if sometime I could possibly join in on one of these conversations, I have a good mic (used to do youtube on a different account) and I feel like I am pretty knowledgeable on this sort of topic. I guess if anybody is interested on seeing something like this, give this a comment a like, or reply to it to see what you guys are interested in it, even though it isn't incredibly Bioware related. Of course, if you think this would be a waste of time, that is all good as well.
Thanks for the consideration. (Man this sort of comment does not belong on RUclips, nothing to see here folks)

For me bioware games and rpgs fall into my SI (Special Interests). I was diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and I have a tendency to fixate on topics of interest.
Bioware is one, horses are another, Game of Thrones, History, a variety of Theologies etc etc.
Sometimes I find so people off the spectrum also have something resembling Special Interests but they often are less knowledgable about why they occassionaly faxate on one thing.

On the topic of video games cause violence and all that trash: off the top of my head, I can think of three groups of people that would spread that around. Those who don't understand it and react the way people have done since forever and demonize it. Those who simply don't like video games and when they hear something against them, they just go "Yeah! That thing I don't like IS bad in this way." And there are those who have an agenda and discrediting video games serves it in some way. In my opinion, only the third group are really terrible people because they often resort to misinformation and give the other two groups more ammunition against gaming.
Feel free to add anything I missed or tell me how the entire idea is completely wrong.

I have a few horses in the ADHD and ADD departments but I will not race them. Not here, lest things will be said that will bring out the idiotic masses who can't tell a rat from a mole and right now, I don't have the physical or emotional health to deal with it. I'll only say this: boys don't have any sort of mental issue most of the time. They're just struggling playing with a deck that's been stacked against them. And I mean boys specifically, human male cubs.
