  • At any given time, eBay, as the world's largest marketplace, has hundreds of millions of active listings. The company has grown from a single curious computer programmer to over 15,000 employees since its founding in 1995. eBay has grown into one of America's largest companies, consistently ranking in the Fortune 500, and is one of the most well-known brands in the world over the last 15 years.
This is the story of the founder, Pierre Omidyar. He started off eBay with Pez candy dispensers. In 1995, the domain that we all know as eBay was launched as "AuctionWeb" over Labor Day weekend by Pierre and he worked tirelessly day and night to build an empire that stands strong to date.
In a world developing at a fast pace, people wanted convenience, and online shopping gave them that. Thinking along these lines, Pierre rebranded his startup into an e-commerce company and named it eShop.
As an entrepreneur, he is blessed with an enquiring spirit. Since his last significant role in eBay, he has been involved in things as diverse as philanthropy and investigative journalism. He even invested in the making of a few movies.
Fun Fact: Did you know Pierre Omidyar earned around $6 an hour in high school for coding?
These are just a few facts about his incredible journey. To learn more about Pierre and the brand, watch this video till the end.
