  • This video show an inexpensive repair of a 1969 Briggs and Stratton "Merry Tiller". In this repair the carburetor is not removed from the motor. I adjust the carb for optimum running. She is called "The Lady In Red" All I needed was Carb. spray and hand tools. A good laugh at myself too!!!

      Well I understand. However, you are not watching a Steven Spielberg production. I went to your channel and noticed you have not made any videos. So, I will make you a deal!!! I will make sure I improve my videos and at the same time I want you to make one video of something you like. I will watch it and enjoy your effort. This is a very difficult thing to do on a budget as there is only one person producing the entertainment. There is no one else doing this. Including----- Ideas, Filming, Production and Editing, Sound and Lighting. I hope you enjoy my other productions and I truly want you to enjoy my other videos.

    Thank you for showing how you got it going. I have a merry tiller of the same vintage but it's a 3 horse. I bought it when I was in my late 20's and now I'm 71. So it's been a good tool. I've changed the tiller bearings a time or two, but same faithful Briggs and Stratton engine. Today, it started, but then died, so your video is very helpful and timely.

    I just bought this same tiller at an estate sale for $40 (they even threw in an 80 tooth carbide tipped table saw blade, probably a$100 blade new). It would not start but it sounded like it wanted to. After watching this video I did the same thing to my tillers carberator, put some fresh gas in, and it fired up the second pull!! Works like a dream! I'll probably replace the oil, spark plug, and belts in the near future and have a tiller that is better then most machines you can buy today. Thank you sir!!

      Well check everything and enjoy yourself doing it. Check the spark to the plug. Check for dirty fuel and a dirty tank. Check the screen at the bottom of the tube. check for a loose carb mount. Sounds like it may have vibrated off after you got it running. Take your time. The machine is probably ok just something little.

      Hey, since I have your attention and should feel inclined, could I bother you with a question?
      With my tiller NOT running, I can lever from idle to wide open and back with no issues.
      However, when running, I cannot throttle the RPMs up. The top linkage doesn’t move. It will not stay running under load; I can manually manipulate everything however.

    I got back into fixin old engines or the newer stuff last Dec. a lady friend has a generator that
    at that time would no longer run. Having a Powerhorse Gen and maintaining it is a good way
    to learn about this stuff. Her generator is similar and I saw that they flipped they 'OFF" switch
    which of course shut down the engine but gas being left in the carb mucked it all up quite
    nicely. mice chewed the pull rope to bits and not well covered the mag had gotten wet. so
    that was another issue, BUT I got her gen running good for her. fixt a neighbors mower and
    was paid with a 7 anna half pound roaster chicken! and a 6 pack of Coors lite! Just pickt up
    what I think is a 16 HP Briggs Stratton engine, all cast iron and this fall i have the chance to
    work on a FarmAll tractor, was her dad's and she wants to get it going as a memorial or a
    tribute. Her Brother Brad taught me alot about engines about 4 decades ago.

      NOW THE HARDEST THING OF ALL IS TO FIND A RELIABLE CHEAP BAND G PARTS SUPPLIER IN UK.............NOT THE EASIEST OF QUESTS
      YOUR LUCKY IN AMERICA ,AS YOU CAN GET PARTS FOR ANYTHING EASILY, BUT LIVING ON A PISSPOT ISLAND LIKE BRITAIN (YOU CAN FIT TEN BRITAINS INTO TEXAS) MAKES ANYTHING YOU WANT FROM OTHER COUNTRIES EXPENSIVE. HAVE A NICE WEEKEND!
      THIS WEEKEND IN BRITAIN ITS CALLED A BANK HOLIDAY LOL WHEN EVERYONE TAKES THE CAR OUT TO SIT IN A NOSE TO TAIL JAM TRYING TO GET TO TOWNS LIKE MINE ON THE COAST WHERE ONCE THERE IT PISSES IT DOWN AND GOES COLD THEN THEY WONDER WHY THEY CAME,REASON IS WE ARE TWO HOURS ONE WAY AND FOUR HOURS THE OTHER AT OUR USUAL 40MPH THEN WE DROP INTO THE SEA.LOL WORST THING WE EVER DID WAS BUILD A TUNNEL AS ALL IT DOES IS LET HUMAN RATS AND OUR ENEMIES IN TO OUR ONCE NICE COUNTRY EUROPE IS NOW NOT A PLACE TO GO TO. SO WE WANDER AROUND BRITAIN IN OUR LITTLE CARS.
      WE ALSO HAVE THE WORST NAZI BASTARD PARKING WARDENS IN THE WORLD, IN ENGLAND IF YOU HAVE A CAR WHOSE SUPERSTRUCTURE EVEN IF IN MID AIR GOES OVER THE PARKING LINES ITS A £75 FINE. ALSO TWICE WEVE COME BACK FROM WALES TO SEE POLICE SHOOTING PEOPLE IN CARS USUALLY NEAR OLDHAM WE PRESUMED THET WERRE JUST TERRORISTS , HEY THE GOOD THING IS WE DONT NEED A PASSPORT FOR WALES OR
      SCOTLAND ,THE ONE PLACE NOT TO BOTHER WITH IS THE LAKE DISTRICT...WHY??? I BEEN THREE TIMES AND EACH TIME IT WAS COVERED IN FOG NEVER SEEN THE LAKES YET LOL.

    Argh! (In the name of all the Peanuts characters)....My Movie Maker is possessed! I can either speed up the entire video or none of it...lol. Excellent diagnosis and repair! It's amazing what a little preventative maintenance does to make our jobs easier. I had a not so fortunate tiller come through this year that had been used for several years without grease in the worm drive, which rendered it destroyed. The 5hp Briggs on that tiller was of the two output shaft type with one running opposed to the other (for reverse)...so there was that singular perk, as the owner said, scrap it all, I just bought a Pony Tiller. So, my time and effort on the dead tiller wasn't wasted since there's a decent 5hp dual output shaft engine on the shelf now. Again, excellent display of what to go through to eliminate possible causes. Cheers my Friend! Zip~

    When I have a diaphragm cover off,I like to oscillate the cover on fine sand paper on a piece of glass,you can tell by eye or a straightedge when you've took off enough so the longest stretch between the low bolts will grab the diaphragm and not leak on the tank.Paint loss there is indicative of a "bowed"cover.

    Hi Bruce, I have rechecked the long tube by spraying Carb cleaner from the orifice w/in the pump. It did made any changes. Since I have relapped both valve and adjust per B&S' spec, changed gasket between carb and engine, gasket between carb and tank and pass small wire thru both orifice behind of main jet (w/in carb) as well as made a new ultrasonic bath for the whole carb . With all that, I only succeeded to have the engine run smoother only at low idle. As soon I am trying to have it revs up it run rough and tend to sometimes provide a small puff thru air cleaner opening (all testing done without the air cleaner on). What is your tougth concerning my engine problem? Thanks ahead for your input.

    Before you dig into the carb, I'd just put some Techron Concentrate into the gas tank. Do a few pulls to get things mixed in and into the carb. Come back in an hour, and it should start. 90% of the time, that will be enough. The old gas turns to Jelly in the carb and clogs things up. Techron dissolves it.

    Yep, a clean gas tank surely makes or breaks that style engine. I was always confused on some of those pulsa jet carbs cuz one of the fuel tubes sometimes had a check valve in it. I would guess that the long tube that drags the fuel up to the secondary tank would be the one that has the check valve to be sure gas didn't just run back down into the main tank compartment causing the carb to "loose its prime" and be hard to start. Perhaps that piece of paper/plastic the owner had under the fuel cap was partially to blame as well if he tried to run the engine with that in place, the cap vent would be plugged. In any event, those are great engines, Briggs at its best.

    Hi very instructive video. I have dismantled the pulsa jet carb (out of a B&S 5HP engine on a generator) , cleaned all passage, changed pump's mambrane and tank gasket. After reinstalling, can start engine but it is not easy (sometimes need to add starting fluid in it thru air breather with air filter removed). When engine run, it run rough only at idle. I have tried to increase tension on governor'spring without any difference on running speed. Any idea why this is hapening? Thanks

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  3 года назад +1

      The long tube that goes down into the tank may still be plugged. I know it is a pain to remove but you may be able to take that little door off where the diaphragm is and shoot some carb spray into each hole at 7:43. We hope to hear a gargling sound in the tank. that should help. Will it run on choke or 1/2 choke. that tells you you need more fuel . Have you cleaned the removable jet at 6:49. I have to ask. Good luck. Sorry i was rambling there. Good luck.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  4 года назад +1

      If the pulley is flat it goes on the flat side of the belt as in an idler puller. The v portion does into the v part of the pulley. That may sound non helpful but when you look and see the idler pulley it will be flat and that is the one where the flat side of the belt goes around. Good luck

      @@BrucesShop Thanks for replying Bruce, appreciate it.
      I've had another look at mine and I thought I had routed the belt correctly but now when I pull the engine over to start, the drive belt is engaged and it tries to bound off. I've tried dropping the pulley down a bit so it's not touching the belt at all and still it tries to run away from me lol.
      Any ideas what I could be doing wrong? Does the pulley need to be up against the belt tight (pushing it upwards) to keep it "away" from the drive shaft and thus not engaged?
      Edit: all sorted now. It was the wrong sized belt. The correct one for the benefit of others is A48: 13x 1220
