How to fix a HONDA ENGINE that WON'T STAY RUNNING - GX160 Troy-Bilt Rototiller

  • This Troy-Bilt Rototiller could have been fixed in 5 minutes, but I ended up messing with for about 2 hours. What I thought to be a fuel-flow issue turned out to be a bad spark plug, which would fire for about 40 seconds (until the engine warmed up) and then die. Sometimes we learn the hard way! In the end, we got the tiller back in service. Thanks for watching.

Thanks, Al. I seem to love making simple projects take longer than they need to....

My husband thanks you very much. Unfortunately, he went through the same process as you and then asked me to look on RUclips to see if I could find a solution. I found your video and now he is one happy gardener. 😂

Spot on. Just spent a few hours down by the dam pulling the carburettor, cleaning everything, overfill the oil (just to be sure), disconnect the on/off switch and oil sensor, to no avail. 5 minutes with a replacement sparkplug and all is well, thankyou.

I was thinking the same thing with my tiller - I’m going to try that spark plug first before I go ahead with taking the fuel line apart! Thanks so much!!

Thank you so much! After trying to get my Honda 5 HP pressure washer to stay running, I happened upon your video. After cleaning the carburetor, checking the gas cap and many hours trying other options, I found your video, I checked my spark plug with my ohm meter, it was shorting out internally and replacing the plug made it run like new again.

You just saved me a lot of time/trouble/money. A new spark plug fixed the same issue for me. Thanks for the video!

Awesome! Yeah, it took me longer than it should have to make the diagnosis, but in the end we got it done!

I had the same issue with a GX390 generator. Ran for 30 seconds cold and about 10 seconds hot. I replaced the carb, air filter, removed and cleaned the fuel tank, changed the oil/disconnected the low pressure cut off, blew out the lines, replaced the fuel filter, cleaned the grounds, adjusted the linkage, the choke, balanced the tires, painted the frame, bought an extension cord in the matching color....nothing. The spark plug was clean and looked good. $6 later it was fixed.

What?! I cannot believe that a new paint job was not enough to convince that machine to run properly! Ha Ha! Anyway, these experiences teach us to always start with the easy stuff. That's what I've learned.

Thanks for vid. Thought about cleaning carb and etc, but knew it was weird that it quickly shut off and it couldn't be fuel. Luckily your vid was first search result. Fixed in 2 minutes and didn't take a screw out.

Believe it or not I would have thought it had something to do with you tilting the machine the few times that you tried to start it, when you tilted it it shut off so I was betting it had something to do with the carburetor and the float in the carburetor Bowl

Yeah, I too thought it was a carburetor problem. Thanks for watching!

A faulty coil will also do this. When it gets hot it quits.

I have a motor on an air compress that run 10-15 minutes then it will shut down. I'm gonna try the spark plug first. Thanks

Or it could be the magneto. I've had them go bad and refuse to start until the engine was completely cooled down again, like after two or more hours. Good luck!
