    The round peg on the choke lever is used to block the fuel line when you remove the carb.. no need for pinchers etc.
    Just pull the lever off and stick it in the pipe

    My late husband bought me a used bcs tiller with a 5.5 honda engine like this one so I could garden. Unfortunately he passed away before fixing it for me and I cannot get it to start! Thank you for this video as now I think I have enough information to check if it's something simple (like no fuel or no spark) that I can fix myself.

    Thanks. Exact engine and problem I have. Cleaned and checked everything short of pulling the carb. That's next and I'm pretty sure I'll find a clogged jet or pilot or whatever it's called when I do. Thanks again, you really can't kill these honda engines.

    Great practical video. I just fixed GCV160 that had a clogged main jet. Bought it from a guy who had replaced many parts and couldn't get it to run. Gave up and sold it to me real cheap.

  • @jyoung_official
    @jyoung_official 8 лет назад +9

    I work and re-build these engines and it's a common fault that the main jet ( pilot jet you called it ) gets clogged. Also by the looks of it you need new piston rings as it was burning oil ( blue smoke ) and that is probably the reason why your compression readings are low.

    I managed to clean it out in situ using lots of brake cleaner and .6 welding wire! Started on the first pull! Thank you.

    Top tip for you. No need to pinch the hose, if you remove the choke lever it fits perfectly in the fuel hose. Honda think of everything. The pilot you refer to is the main jet. Once this is out you tap the carb on the bench another bigger jet will drop out which will also need cleaning. ( honda trained industrial engine tech )

      Jason Tearne hi there just want some advice on a Honda gx160 on a concrete power trowel, when I start it up, it fires straight into gear and fast too, not idle at all. Recently new throttle linkage, cable, air filter & outer casing. Any help would be much appreciated thanks

    • @jasontearne2334

      karl luke under the fuel tank is the governor control arm and this may need resetting. Remove tank. Loosen the 10mm nut. Set rhe throttle arm at full revs. Use a pair of pliers and set the pin ( just above the 10mm nut , you will see there is a notch for your pliers ) and with your pliers on the left move the pin until it stops. Tighten nut refit fuel tank set throttle arm to tickover start engine. Hope this is helpful and not over compicated

  • @watermanone7567
    @watermanone7567 8 лет назад +3

    The jet is a main jet. And you should also remove the emulsion tube under the main jet and clean out the many tiny holes. Also you only need to remove the three carb nuts and bolt, and not the top plate to save some time. I also use carb cleaner spray and not sea foam but that is only a preference. Good job.

    • @nemopark2871
      @nemopark2871 8 лет назад +1

      +Stephen May he got lucky without removing the emulsion tube, and even he did not thoroughly clean the carb, lucky man

    • @dearthworm
      @dearthworm 7 лет назад +2

      Yep, if this is the same as on my GX390, and it does appear to be the same, the pilot jet is on the left side of the carb (black plastic 'plug') that's held in place by the idle speed screw. The pilot air adjustment screw is also on the left side by the mounting flange, hidden under a tiny square plastic cover.
      And, while the video was a good complete introduction to small engine trouble shooting (air, compression, fuel, spark), if you have a Honda engine (or any small engine, for that matter), that's been sitting for awhile and won't start, I'd go right to that float bowl and main jet first. I think 90% of no-start problems on small engines are caused by a fouled main jet due to stale fuel left in the machine during the off-season.
      In my experience, another leading cause of no-start problems on these Honda engines is that they are sensitive to spark plug fouling, and tend to run overly rich which leads to fouling. Someone I know has a small Honda engine on a pump which he uses several times per day in his business. He has learned to keep a handful of spare plugs on hand. The engine will start first-pull and run great for days and days, and then one day it will absolutely refuse to start. He knows to just change the plug. Often, changing back to a previously used plug will work too. They are finicky about spark plugs.

      Nemo Park I have a gx340 and wasnt able to remove the emulsion tube is it possible that could be the problem why I cant get fuel in engine?

  • @FRIVZ306
    @FRIVZ306 Год назад

    Quick tip as far as the to much fuel issue goes make sure your needle seat isn’t swollen because what happened is when that needle seat is swollen it will keep the float from completely stopping the fuel supply to the carburetor and the float will stay open so make sure your seat isn’t swollen.

  • @danburch9989
    @danburch9989 6 лет назад +1

    I don't know if this applies specifically to your engine, but some small engines have a compression release mechanism on the intake or exhaust valve. This delays the valve timing so that the compression is lower, but still strong enough to run. The purpose is to make it a little easier to pull start these engines with a cord. I have an engine that won't run unless I start it with starting fluid. My jets are open as best as I can determine, new gas. I can run a fine wire up through the jet (but I can't remove the jet; in too tight). I think I'll remove the carb again and soak it.

    • @billkeys6733
      @billkeys6733 5 лет назад

      Sometimes the seals/gaskets deteriorate and get leaky and that causes the engine vacuum to be so low that it will not draw in fuel without starting fluid to get it going. I have an old Briggs engine that I have a can of starting fluid attached with a tube into the carb so I just reach down and hit the aerosol button when starting cold.

    Honda engines have a decompression lever on the camshaft gear which gives a false low compression reading. Only way to really check a Honda is to either open valve cover and disable exhaust rocker, do a leak down test or take it apart and check tolerances.

    total novice here, but trying to learn... bought a wb20x from an auction, had gas in it, no muffler, no idea if it ran. replaced the carb, got a muffler, new sparkplug, changed the oil, checked the air filter, cleaned the gas tank... when i pull, it doesn' even try to turn over, much like what you have. i thought i had covered the 'air,fuel,spark' stuff... what am i missing? not afraid to pull the whole thing apart but don't want to if i don't have to.

    It could be a leaky float or the level could be wrong, they can be adjusted by heating them up with a heat gun apparently !
    It could also be a leaky needle & seat,low compression can give symptoms of a fuel issue such as blowing black smoke,I assume this is the engine that you had to replace the block on ?

    There's a mixture screw right next to your rocker cover/ valves. Half way down the side. 1 1/2 turns out to start then adjust when warm. Check to see if a previous Muppet has tightened it to start adjustment so much they broke the needle of the screw and jammed it in the carb body. GX clone carb will not fit the genuine GX needle hole, different profile needles and holes. Buy genuine. They're better.

    Is this engine running? If not check oil to see if it is thin/smells like fuel... The seat and needle in these carbs can go bad with ethanol causing fuel to leak into crankcase. Tell tale sign is running for only a few seconds at a time and white smoke coming from exhaust. Would recommend putting a new carb on which is less than $20 and changing oil out.

New plug, new air filter, new oil filled as per manual, fresh fuel. Clean the plug, start it and it fires and runs for about 30 seconds or longer then cuts out, black plug again. Checked the carb, defo getting fuel. A few months ago I used it to mix founds for a conservatory and it ran all day ??

    Hello! Could you damage this engine if you work on it with the shaft in vertical position?
    I had the oil enter the exhaust and when i tried to start it, it felt as something was blocking it. I removed the valve cover and the arm that pushes the exhaust valve was pushing on the side of the spring. Also the guide plate for the push rod was worn out on the side and the gap of the valves felt like 1mm, not 0.15-0.2mm.

      Your problem is ethanol in the gas; that screws up everything in the carb sooner or later. Clean all carb out and use Lucas ethanol treatment in your gas.

    Title says "won't start" but it did. Where did "pilot jet" come from ? And it should be called "idle jet" cuz that's what it does.

    I have a GX270 and it got to where it would start but not run long It took me a while to figure out I had filled the gas tank very very full and this cut of the breathing hole in the gas cap. Sure made me look stupid

    White smoke is an indication of oil burning, either valve or ring issue. Black smoke is an indication of too rich a fuel mixture.

    You can take off the carb dome and get to the pilot without taking the carb off and save an hour lol

    Hello, I have the same engine on my power sprayer rig, the damn thing is hard to start. When I pull the handle it is very stiff, then it eases up a little but, I have to really pull on that to get it going. Any ideas? Too much compression, should I change my oil, I just replaced the spark plug.

      It needs the valves adjusted. Will pull easier after that.
