In that era of movies two techniques and styles reigned king; shaky cam or hyper realism (military action, police action/drama etc...) when the aforementioned were released and were very successful. But a major studio probably wouldn't take a chance on something like that anyways. Not only would they rather invest the money into something like the MCU, they wouldn't want to be part of the obvious controversy a movie like that would stir up.

Doom and Duke Nukem are just perfect sources for awesome action movies of that genre and era, if only we still had the talent in Hollywood to “make ‘em like they used to.” The closest thing that passes for an “action” movie nowadays is John Wick, which is literally 2 hours of non-stop violence and nothing else. No plot, no characters.
