There is a trend in doing it more and more the old fashioned ways as people tend to appreciate that like we all do here. But I agree, this amount is HUGE and has yet to be met or even topped.
Just look at how immaculately this film turned out, and compare it to similar big budget films of the early 90s, many of which don't hold up or you can see the seams starting to show. Every shot James Cameron wanted in this film, he ensured he got. The guy is a visionary and a perfectionist.
@@silencedmaxim5889 not one person, one director, can or could make Avatar. Albeit, it's not as exciting as T2, it's still the grandest movie ever made, and the technology behind Avatar is groundbreaking. Nobody is Cameron, and no one comes close to Cameron, and no one will come close to Cameron in the future.
I called in sick to work on opening day and watched it 3 times, fucking epic, nothing had ever been done like this movie before. Walked out mind blown. Starship Troopers did the same, I walked out after watching that and I still remember thinking "they can do ANYTHING now".
@costazero4607, takes me back to a fun childhood time with Family just like the first Terminator movie and other movies like RoboCop, Alien, Tron and so many more! Really miss my folks....
This entire film was put together in one single unassuming industrial office. It's still one of the best films ever made. James Cameron is so gifted. I can't imagine the stress of all that gear, crew, time schedule all being on you, which I guess add up to being a great director.
Both the practical effects AND CGI were great in this movie. When Terminator 2 launched everyone was enthused about the liquid metal CGI, ^_^. It was soooo cool. Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 are why you saw a T-Rex on the PlayStation demo disc, or in that early stage of Tomb Raider, and the Dural unveil for Virtua Fighter 3 featuring liquid metal - or the Metal Suit in Mario 64 - there was an obsession to bring these fantastic movie visuals from Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park home, and the games industry wanted to catch up to these inspiring effects we saw in these masterpieces in the cinema. The 90s was a hugely exciting time. From the SAM Coupé to the Dreamcast. From Teletext to Internet Broadband. =).
@ajmetz82 Agreed. The CGI they did use was tastefully done and not overused compared to movies today. Jurassic Park and T2 were absolutely revolutionary in regards to the combination of practical and CGI 💯. It was great being a kid in the 90s!
Thing is this is when it started. It was the T1000 effects in this movie led to the flood of CGI in movies and where we are today. We lost the heart in blockbusters, they could have been so much more..
It's only one part of the puzzle that did make it so good, but I agree. Cameron does an outstanding job on planing and directing - a natural and a perfectionist, but friendly and accessible. Not to forget motivating people, keeping it fun, using talented actors and actresses. My God and Jesus, this movie still keeps me coming back after more that 30 years!
@@roninja6929 Matrix was probably one of last movies on the fringe, using CGI only when absolutely necessary, and comitting to tons of practicals everywhere else and still shot on film and that was only the end of hte same decade. Over next few years all movies lost the "film look" as everyone went to digital and grainless look in mid 2000s.
I watched this again for about the 6th time last night and it occurred to me just how good some of the minor characters are. The foster parents for example - great performances. And the cigar smoking, Harley-riding leather clothing benefactor - brilliant performance.

She said it wouldn't be like in the movie, we would have air raid sirens going off. I shit you not our air raid sirens went off not long after that. I was sitting in my 4th grade class and the siren starts wailing from the nearby air base. I guess it was for a tornado warning but for a few minutes of confusion in the classroom I was absolutely terrified thinking we were about to get nuked.
Hard work on movies really pays off. This move, Fury Road....when movies have real stunts and less CGI, it's hard work but it looks 1000 times better than CGI.
I got your point, but really good CGIs are usually overlooked(cuz it's so good ppl doesn't notice) and typically ppl just watch movie with prejudice... I hate the trend of overusing CGI and rushed materials but they are also underrated imo
This is also a really weird comment, as T2 is widely known to have expanded heavily on the toolset they had to produce state or the art CGI. These same tools grew into what we know of today as Maya and 3DS Max, tools used for countless movies and video games. So yeah, extremely short sighted. It's not like his point is entirely wrong, but when it comes to this movie, it couldn't be more wrong.
What makes you think that VFX creation isn't hard work? Have you ever been on a crunch as part of a VFX team and slept on the floor for a month? Also, Fury Road had a shit ton of CGI. The hills, dust, and even some cars were literally all computer generated, but you didn't notice that becasue you assumed it was all practical as it looked amazing. I'd advise you to watch this series and maybe put down the view that practical is always superior to CGI. ruclips.net/video/7ttG90raCNo/видео.htmlsi=pJ5cjxJjv3SUKCd5
@@CrAzYpotpie Nah, you missed the point. When at all possible, real shadows, real environments take priority. Yes, they created CGI later from this but it's a last resort and only when needed. The newer version of Dune won awards because while they had to use computers to models ships and planets, they went out of their way to film real environment and shadows, light, color. So you missed the point. Most studios like Marvel do the opposite and will green screen and CGI everything.
It's the little things that I don't realize beforehand that add so much detail and life to this movie. For example: having someone off camera slowly pushing sand while they are in the bunker looking at weapons.
man, it is incredible just how much work goes into these. like, obviously it's a ton of work, but having to do _every single thing_ is just mind-blowing.

Both are good when done right. T2 used earlier CGI but more love and heart was put into it because guys like Jim Cameron, Stan Winston and Arnold has a genuine passion for their work. Today producers, directors and actors only care about lining their pockets fast
@@JustinLodes Somehow back in the early 90s despite the lack of computing power they still managed to pull off better effects than today when there is endless computing power to throw at effects. I agree with you - it is the passion and skill of those behind the cameras far more than the tools they have to play with. Plus those guys still working in the 90s came from the old school backgrounds of having to do everything "for real". The current generation of behind the scenes movie makers often never even need to get out of their chairs and spend all day at the computer screen. I can't even think of any movie made after the mid 90s that I would even want to bother watching more than once, yet I come back to all these epic films made from the early 60s to mid 90s all the time.

That T2000 was the stuff of nightmares.
Same here! It was the first movie that made me cry. Second grade. Been my favorite ever since!
This entire film was put together in one single unassuming industrial office. It's still one of the best films ever made. James Cameron is so gifted. I can't imagine the stress of all that gear, crew, time schedule all being on you, which I guess add up to being a great director.
Movies that are exclusively CGI will NEVER be as good as practical effects like this. Truly a timeless masterpiece.
T2 extensively used CGI.
@@Psythiknot extensively but a handful of standout moments
Yeah, I dunno about that one. Let's talk in 30 years and see how you feel.
That analog way of doing things with real objects, without excessive computers, is what made it so good.

Arnold's spin move with the shotgun is one of my happiest movie memories. I swear you could feel the entire audience's jaws dropping in the theater.

love how you can see the crazy amount of work that made this a lasting movie.
Hard work on movies really pays off. This move, Fury Road....when movies have real stunts and less CGI, it's hard work but it looks 1000 times better than CGI.
I got your point, but really good CGIs are usually overlooked(cuz it's so good ppl doesn't notice)
and typically ppl just watch movie with prejudice...
Fury Road was feminazi trash
It's the little things that I don't realize beforehand that add so much detail and life to this movie. For example: having someone off camera slowly pushing sand while they are in the bunker looking at weapons.

I don't care what anyone says. I miss prosthetics and great makeup work. Such talent was superior to lazy CGI of today.
Both are good when done right. T2 used earlier CGI but more love and heart was put into it because guys like Jim Cameron, Stan Winston and Arnold has a genuine passion for their work. Today producers, directors and actors only care about lining their pockets fast
A time and place for each, but yes I do miss the old ways.
Making computer imagery isn't "lazy". Look at Pixar. Though I do miss the more practical effects from the films of my youth.
When they undercharge and overwork the CGI artists, it's no wonder the shit we get today.
