For me this device would massively help for video content creation - easily bring the mic and camera into one source and take one port on my computer. However where I think it falls down is for console streaming. If you need to connect a HDMI to capture the gameplay and another to capture the camera it presents a limitation. I wouldn't complain if Rode releases Linux versions for their software (go Flatpack if you don't want to deal with distro-specific packages).

I was initially going to get the Rodecaster Pro with Podmic and use my webcam, but I decided to hold off until the Streamer X came out because it also does video capture. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I would love to get this too simplify my streaming and recording process and it has the sound queues and everything there it looks super useful. I use streamlabs though I wonder if it’s compatible with stream labs I have a lot set up with it already,
My first thought was video switching too. My podcast with my son has episodes with in-studio guests, and a 3 camera setup. Love using the USB capability on the cameras, but HDMI switching would be sweet. I have the RCP2, and would gladly give it up for a StreamerX with three HDMI inputs.
Looks like an awesome device, thanks for your comprehensive review mate. My only question, if I may be so bold, is if I have a two PC setup and don't have admin control over one of the PCs will the Streamer X still work on that PC? I want to use it to be able to switch between my gaming PC and my work PC when I need to run Teams calls using the microphone including using the mute/ video buttons. Does it need to install itself on the PC even if I don't install Rode Central or Unify because I can't?
Assuming it won't work. You do need to download drivers on the computer. That said...talk to your IT guy and they might be able to work that out for you
Ok. Great device from m what i seen and heard. But here is my question as i am looking to get an atem mini and a rode caster for podcasting/streaming. How would this work or how would i connect my camera to streamer x, if i have lets say my ps5 to streamerx hdmi in and hdmi thru goes to my tv. Where would the camera go in? Or the camera will connect directly to pc/laptop. Thanks.
Hey Everybody i hav a serious Question which is discussed before but with no Solution at the End. My SetUP is a MacStudio with a Elgato CamLink and a RodeProdcaster Pro for Webinars, ONline-Meetings and soon a Video-Podcast. What i am trying to find is a 2 Camera 4K solution or 2 Video Signal Mixer and i thought the RodeStreamer X could be the Device of Choice..Added Value also i can use Pads as some Midi Key Trigger to have a more Space Safing solution and i dont need anymore the elgato Stream deck. For me its about how to find the perfect Solution for my Streaming Ideas. 1. Question: Is it worth to think about Streamer X ? is there a way to connect a second 4K Camera or another Video-Signal? --> The Disadvantages if the Computer is the Videomixer with Software like eCamm or MimoLive is the Synchronisation between Sound and Video. Thats a Advantage i see in a All-In-One Solution of the Streamer X. 2. Question: Maybe Elgato CamLink and RodePodcaster Pro is already a good Solution? Maybe i want to optimize smth. which works fine so far.
Hello. I think ATEM mini helps you. I propose something like the following solution: - Microphone connects to streamer x - Camera outputs are connected to atem mini inputs - Output from atem mini is connected to streamer x
Is that 4k outputing... So To watch and view it any platform as 4k ??? Click ... Gear wheel Setting ⚙️ ... image quality adjustment ... Advance... 4K ?
Is it worth it to align this with a stream deck into a larger 4 channel mixer? Just thinking of the lines of having more power, control and versatility.
Can i use it to make a dual computer streaming set up? my pc being my gaming rig and the mac as the streaming pc. also if both of my HDMI connections will be occupied with the computers where can i connect a camera to it?
if you were to use BOTH head phone plugs 3.5mm and the 1/4 will both show up on rode connect/unify??? for routing/volume adjustment purposes. when you showed the app i only 1 but im assuming you only were using 1 (headset) for example i would use the 1/4 inch for my headset and use the other headset 3.5mm as a trrs line out but want to make sure i can control both within the connect/unify app.
@@DarkCornerStudios So it effectively replaces the rodecaster pro II for smaller podcasts. I am currently using the rodecaster pro I. That makes the upgrade more of an interesting possibility. Its also about half the price and size of the II.
I got NTH-100 headphones and confused how to connect them to laptop. plus sound is not quite high. So decided to get a device where I can connect it to and possibly amplify + have control over my microphone and plus nice bonus to screen record! Sometimes you want to have something recorded for your personal needs without anyone else in the office knowing. This is the device. Also I tired of every different bluetooth headphones, so nth-100 is within budget and hopefully gonna last long.
I was shopping for a capture card and I bumped into an openbox piece of this StreamerX. 50% off the price of the new. I did not think twice. Still to test it out.
Sorry - meant to post on this review. Hi - Nice, thoughtful review...thanks. Question...if I may. I picked up the Streamer X locally and while it does work, meaning the hdmi passthrough works and the ports appear in OSX Mac sound control panel, it will not recognize the device under Rode Central v 2.0.28. I've tried in on both Mac and PC...same thing. I noticed that you and another reviewer used v2.0.29 for while reviewing (beta). Is this version required for the device to be recognized under Rode Central? It's the only thing I can think of. Thought you might know. Regardless, thanks for the great review.
@DarkCornerStudios i preordered and it was sent out to me,......probably by accident,....preordered all 3 streamerx, podmic, and rodecaster duo to do reviews but recieved the streamerx and podmic early the duo has not been recieved yet
@@DarkCornerStudios podmic is fine i can hook that up to the roadcaster,….and the streamer x works fine with video and audio tested it with obs and unifiy on 2 pc set and it works,…..took some doing without rode central,….just was curious if there was a date mentioned i lnow the original NAB date was set for launch as the end of May. Anyway thanks for the responses
I do a lot of stream my ps5 through my PC. I am curious how the slight delay stacks up with other pieces of hardware. Like the external HD60s+ from elgato?
If you mount a powered expansion dock to your Laptop it should be able to handle the streamer, devices, external screens etc. My laptop clicks into a dock and turns into a powerhouse, I agree it’s not very useful on its own.
I'm a total Rode fan. This is excellent design. They deserve kudos. They make their stuff in Australia not some sweat shop in China, their consumer attention and support is unsurpassed. Oh by the way good review Aiden. Yeah as the hardware gets better I'm tempted to do a podcast with video. Just my poetry and some political rants obs. I have a communist nephew fgs 😂
I wonder if this would replace my Elgato stream card and my Wave XLR. I have had so many problems with audio and audio switching with it but its so tied in to the the stream deck that I am nervous about moving away from that eco system
Great review. I should ask Rode why they put all connection in the back. The XLR is ok give clean desk, but damn the headphone should in front. I sit in front of the unit. Presonus make it vicerversa also stupid, mic in front and headphone in back. Small things complaining on high level ^^. And I love the new podmic, hm I sell my old one ;-)
I'd think I'll wait for the Rodecaster Duo to release for only an extra 100 or so you get a little bit more that makes it a better value than the streamer x imo. Also Mackie DLZ creator vs Rodecaster Pro 2 when??????
Have you had any problems with Stream X so far? Because the reviews speak against the device, it is said to constantly cause problems, disconnections, etc?
@@DarkCornerStudios i preordered and it showed up fast. Lol I almost sent it back cause I’m like hey why is this thing not registering. I have tried usbc to usba and have bought all kinds of cords and nothing happens. I was gonna use it for a workshop this week and I am not able to use it.
Same for me, pre-ordered, showed up Saturday and will not show up in Rode Central 2.0.28 on Windows. Have contacted Rode thinking the unit is faulty. Thank you for mentioning that a newer version of Rode Central is required. I have even bought a new Rode SC18 cable thinking that would help. Can you ask Rode when the new version will be released?
I just want one with two inputs, with at least one of them with a Hi-Z input option for guitar. It would be cool if they made one in a traditional audio interface form factor without the pads. I use my keyboard for switching scenes in OBS so I don't need a stream deck type thing. Simply having an audio interface with onboard DSP and an HDMI capture card in one device is enough for me.
Hi Joey - with the UNIFY software, you can access all three inputs (XLR combi, Headset and Wireless) simultaneously - so in effect it becomes a 3 channel audio interface!
What's your take on this head to head with the Go XLR? You mentioned the multi-use of the RODE Streamer X which for me off rip makes it a better value. Once you mentioned streamers (along with what this is aimed towards) it got me thinking that many run to the GO XLR which seems to be the SM7B of interfaces in a way. I'm genuinely intrigued to here your thoughts on this or maybe see a comparison! - Antics :)
The video capture sets this thing apart in every way. That said I don't know much about the latest goxlr offerings. But until they release one with video capture...there is no choice. Also...Aphex is unchallenged in the market hands down
I'm looking forward to the Roadcaster III Stream X Combo - 4 Mic Inputs, 4 Video Inputs, and all the sliders and knobs..... Oh! dream come true please.
I like the atem like switcher idea. Maybe with a rodecaster pro 3. My only regret is it didn't come out at the same time as the rcp2. And yes if I could integrate it with my rcp2 that would be amazing
I decided to get one. The Streamer X doesn't want to update via Macbook with Rode Central and Unify software isn't even out for Mac. I tried it on a windows laptop as well. Same issue. I am heavily disappointed with this experience. Especially since I have their go 2 mic and podmic. The way I see it, I didn't spend 400 bucks to be a beta tester, It should work right out the box and update without issues with all the software available for all OS users. It seems to me they rushed this product out and I"m sending mine back. I guess I'm stuck with other solutions for now.
So that is how supercardioid man is done. HDMI 2.0 is supposed to be 4K@60fps. If it is only 30fps that is a shame. How is the pass-through? Does it just work or is it a pain? Is it HDR and HDCP compliant
I would like to be able to control the volume for my audience while I'm streaming with the volume adjustment. I currently use Voicemeeter with a Midi controller. But I would like to be able to do that with Unify.
I got a pod mic It wouldnt work so I reach out to rode support and they recommend this device but my computer is still playing audio out of the microphone instead of receiving input any tips I’m just at a loss
Would this work with a ps5 and laptop set up? I use an elgato hd60x capture card but the audio issues between playstation and the capture card are a pain in the but.
@@DarkCornerStudios I wanna get one to ditch the Cam Link, similar to you. BUT choosing different audio devices in software can be a pain - I have an RCP2. Then half of the thing will sit unused. Kind of defeats the purpose I guess. On a Mac I can use omnibus from audio movers to kind of merge them together, but omnibus is a little clunky.
I was waiting for this product for at least 4 years :D heh I'm amazed that RODE did it, and also did a step above what I imagined and wanted all these years! Crazy! :)
Actually that was too invigorating. Can you do a review for people on blood pressure medication. Taking the unprescribed sleeping pill now and wiil dream of the specs on this. ❤
I currently have the rodecaster pro 1 and it's now overkill for my needs. I only need to record a single mic channel, have access to a couple of pads, bring in some audio from an app on my computer and then record it all back to my mac. Will the streamer x do what I need?
This would be perfect if it had an output for desktop speakers. Doesn't have to be special, just something other than the headphone outputs. It is tiny, so I doubt there's room, but that is the only thing stopping me from getting it. Other than that it would be the perfect unit. I am not exaggerating, that is the one thing stopping me from getting it. I now have to consider the Rodecastor Duo for $100 more which sucks, because I am on a fixed income. I also don't think the Duo acts as a capture card so I might be forced into a situation where I have to wait for the next iteration of the StreamerX.
@@DarkCornerStudios You're trying to drive me crazy. You sat down and said "How can I make Sean lose his friggin mind? Oh I know! Zoom in and out and then cut tight wide, tight wide. That'll leave him twitching". lol
Can you ask Rode what is the Bitrate that the Streamer X can output from the device to software like OBS? Im curious. I asked them this but i got crickets, i really hate that about rode. Unless i complain about something on my main youtube channel that has less than 1.5k subscribers, then i get answers but then i also have all the rode Fanboys attacking me just for asking. I wouldn't have to ask anything if they would give technical info on their website for the products they sell lol! I still love my Rodecaster Pro II even though it let me down in the made for musicians in mind part by requiring a DAW.
Hi Jose. The Streamer X send uncompressed video over USB using the UVC protocol. This is then encoded by your streaming software, so the bitrate is set by your software, not by the Streamer X. I hope that helps!

Love the three additional minutes after fade to black. Not sure if that helps, or hurts algorithm watch time results?
Its your reflection time on your upcoming purchase...lol
My first thought was video switching too. My podcast with my son has episodes with in-studio guests, and a 3 camera setup. Love using the USB capability on the cameras, but HDMI switching would be sweet. I have the RCP2, and would gladly give it up for a StreamerX with three HDMI inputs.
Yeah...stay tuned.
I think it might be a future thing...
That said...talk to your IT guy and they might be able to work that out for you
@@DarkCornerStudios thanks for the quick response!
I propose something like the following solution:
- Microphone connects to streamer x
- Camera outputs are connected to atem mini inputs
- Output from atem mini is connected to streamer x
Is that 4k outputing... So To watch and view it any platform as 4k ???
Click ... Gear wheel Setting ⚙️ ... image quality adjustment ... Advance... 4K ?
Is it worth it to align this with a stream deck into a larger 4 channel mixer?
Just thinking of the lines of having more power, control and versatility.
Can i use it to make a dual computer streaming set up? my pc being my gaming rig and the mac as the streaming pc. also if both of my HDMI connections will be occupied with the computers where can i connect a camera to it?
Does it connect to the Rode Caster and would it work for interviews and captures?
if you were to use BOTH head phone plugs 3.5mm and the 1/4 will both show up on rode connect/unify??? for routing/volume adjustment purposes. when you showed the app i only 1 but im assuming you only were using 1 (headset) for example i would use the 1/4 inch for my headset and use the other headset 3.5mm as a trrs line out but want to make sure i can control both within the connect/unify app.
Great video! Does it do mix minus from an incoming sound source? And how could we adjust the level of the incoming source?
Yes!
And you adjust it through Rode Central
@@DarkCornerStudios So it effectively replaces the rodecaster pro II for smaller podcasts. I am currently using the rodecaster pro I. That makes the upgrade more of an interesting possibility. Its also about half the price and size of the II.
Okay RODE, when & where can we buy the new windscreens (Rode Xdm or Podmic usb type?)
I wrote them ages ago the same questions. No answere. I think they never will sell it.
I will be attaching this to my list of questions.
Let me see if I can get an answer
I got NTH-100 headphones and confused how to connect them to laptop. plus sound is not quite high. So decided to get a device where I can connect it to and possibly amplify + have control over my microphone and plus nice bonus to screen record! Sometimes you want to have something recorded for your personal needs without anyone else in the office knowing. This is the device. Also I tired of every different bluetooth headphones, so nth-100 is within budget and hopefully gonna last long.
Awesome video my dude!
Thanks!
Does this device has the output delay and Master compeller effects like the Rodecaster Pro 2? Thanks this video.
It needs the updated Rode Central.
Won't be released until the official unit is released.
Seems some leaked out into the wprld
@@DarkCornerStudios Thank you. I suspected as much. Much appreciated.
Do we have a date yet when the newer version of rode central cause rode central will not work with mine???
No idea.
Probably as soon as it's released officially.
How did you pick one up?
@DarkCornerStudios i preordered and it was sent out to me,......probably by accident,....preordered all 3 streamerx, podmic, and rodecaster duo to do reviews but recieved the streamerx and podmic early the duo has not been recieved yet
@@G.E.T the podmic should work fine with the old Rode Central...so at least you get to play with that!
@@G.E.T all good.
Yeah they didn't tell me when release dates were either
Does this unit require OBS to work? How does this compare to the new Mackie MainStream unit (RODE owns Mackie).
Thanks for the video. Great job! Can't wait to get one!
I have a communist nephew fgs
😂
I wonder if this would replace my Elgato stream card and my Wave XLR. I have had so many problems with audio and audio switching with it but its so tied in to the the stream deck that I am nervous about moving away from that eco system
Great review. I should ask Rode why they put all connection in the back. The XLR is ok give clean desk, but damn the headphone should in front. I sit in front of the unit. Presonus make it vicerversa also stupid, mic in front and headphone in back. Small things complaining on high level ^^. And I love the new podmic, hm I sell my old one ;-)
I wish Rode made Rodecaster Duo with Capture card!
Give it time
@@DarkCornerStudiosthey should hook up with Rogue Amoeba (MacOS only though). Just thinking out loud.
I can’t get the device to be recognized by rode central. I do not have a usbc input on my laptop.
Need the version of Rode Central.
It isn't out yet
@@DarkCornerStudios so it is a software issue? Did they give you the software for this?
@@whoismichaelesquire yeah.
Guessing you got yours early as well by accident?
Can i use it to record using Android phone/ Iphone? For making video contents ?
Does it have side tone? / voice monitoring?
I just want one with two inputs, with at least one of them with a Hi-Z input option for guitar. It would be cool if they made one in a traditional audio interface form factor without the pads. I use my keyboard for switching scenes in OBS so I don't need a stream deck type thing. Simply having an audio interface with onboard DSP and an HDMI capture card in one device is enough for me.
Hi Joey - with the UNIFY software, you can access all three inputs (XLR combi, Headset and Wireless) simultaneously - so in effect it becomes a 3 channel audio interface!
Excellent review, thank you!
Also...Aphex is unchallenged in the market hands down
@@DarkCornerStudios Solid take!
Pretty happy with mine. My only complaint is that the noise floor on the headphone output is very high. Even worse than on the rodecaster pro 2
same here
I'm looking forward to the Roadcaster III Stream X Combo - 4 Mic Inputs, 4 Video Inputs, and all the sliders and knobs..... Oh! dream come true please.
I like the atem like switcher idea. Maybe with a rodecaster pro 3. My only regret is it didn't come out at the same time as the rcp2. And yes if I could integrate it with my rcp2 that would be amazing
What soft do you use to capture the video ? Is there a way to choose a mic like in podcastsster 2 ?
I use a dslr...so the video is captured on the camera
Are DSP settings saved on the Streamer X, or must RODE Central always be open when you want to use DSP?
I am trying to find a goxlr mini replacement will this do the job?
I decided to get one. The Streamer X doesn't want to update via Macbook with Rode Central and Unify software isn't even out for Mac. I tried it on a windows laptop as well. Same issue. I am heavily disappointed with this experience. Especially since I have their go 2 mic and podmic. The way I see it, I didn't spend 400 bucks to be a beta tester, It should work right out the box and update without issues with all the software available for all OS users. It seems to me they rushed this product out and I"m sending mine back. I guess I'm stuck with other solutions for now.
Can you review the rode podmic usb/xlr mic :) would like to hear it with the aphex processing
So that is how supercardioid man is done. HDMI 2.0 is supposed to be 4K@60fps. If it is only 30fps that is a shame. How is the pass-through? Does it just work or is it a pain? Is it HDR and HDCP compliant
I thought 4k60 was 2.1?
Anyhow, it works without latency, and yeah it is HDR compliant, though not sure about HDCP
4K 120Fps is HDMI 2.1, 4K 60fps Is HDMI 2.0 😎👌

I would like to be able to control the volume for my audience while I'm streaming with the volume adjustment. I currently use Voicemeeter with a Midi controller. But I would like to be able to do that with Unify.
You can do that with Unify
I got a pod mic It wouldnt work so I reach out to rode support and they recommend this device but my computer is still playing audio out of the microphone instead of receiving input any tips I’m just at a loss
Would this work with a ps5 and laptop set up? I use an elgato hd60x capture card but the audio issues between playstation and the capture card are a pain in the but.
Yes!
Have you tried plugging the USB C from this into the USB C of the Rodecaster Pro 2?
Not yet, though it is on the list of things to do.
Gonna be more content coming out on this thing for sure!
@@DarkCornerStudios I want to know this so bad, did you already try this? :)
@@Chaymeleon no sadly not
Is it possible to connect a USB microphone like a rode USB NT?
I was waiting for this product for at least 4 years :D heh
I'm amazed that RODE did it, and also did a step above what I imagined and wanted all these years! Crazy! :)
Actually that was too invigorating. Can you do a review for people on blood pressure medication. Taking the unprescribed sleeping pill now and wiil dream of the specs on this. ❤
i'm using a joby wavopod mic. can i plug a usb type c mic into this?
I currently have the rodecaster pro 1 and it's now overkill for my needs. I only need to record a single mic channel, have access to a couple of pads, bring in some audio from an app on my computer and then record it all back to my mac. Will the streamer x do what I need?
a year later.. what are your thoughts on this ? Esp down to 240$ now. Do you still use it ?
Actually I have been planning a video on this.
Lets see if I can get that out by Monday
I wonder is the processor less strong because of how compact it is or is it the same?
No issues on my end
This would be perfect if it had an output for desktop speakers. Doesn't have to be special, just something other than the headphone outputs. It is tiny, so I doubt there's room, but that is the only thing stopping me from getting it. Other than that it would be the perfect unit. I am not exaggerating, that is the one thing stopping me from getting it. I now have to consider the Rodecastor Duo for $100 more which sucks, because I am on a fixed income. I also don't think the Duo acts as a capture card so I might be forced into a situation where I have to wait for the next iteration of the StreamerX.
use 3.5mm headset connection on Streamer X to a pair of iLoud Micros...have not tried it and just a thought, will update if I can do it
What's with the zoom in and zoom out so often?
Just keeping it fresh yo...
To be honest, trying it out instead of the constant jump cuts.
Gotta find the inbetween
@@DarkCornerStudios You're trying to drive me crazy. You sat down and said "How can I make Sean lose his friggin mind? Oh I know! Zoom in and out and then cut tight wide, tight wide. That'll leave him twitching". lol
@@DarkCornerStudios This is how we grow.
I don't mind the edits. Makes it feel more dynamic.
Looking into it!
@@DarkCornerStudios thank you 🙇♂️🙏
Hi Jose. The Streamer X send uncompressed video over USB using the UVC protocol. This is then encoded by your streaming software, so the bitrate is set by your software, not by the Streamer X. I hope that helps!
Can I use this as a replacement for HD60 s + and get sound from PS5 to stream
I believe so.
It's been awhile since I used an HD60s.
But yeah..
Hi I just tuned into your channel and hit the subscribe button 👍 Q. I'm in the process of deciding which Audio Interface to purchase? I'm a newbie solo creator/videographer and so so tech savvy so I don't want equipment that is complicated to set up or use. I don't mind spending the bucks for gear that does a "quality" job. My gear so far, Shure sm7b, Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X headphones, Audioengine Desktop Speakers, Sony A7S III Camera, Fast PC. Use: Talking Head, Voice Over, Podcast, Zoom Calls. Editing in Premiere Pro. The RODE STREAMER X sounds ideal would you agree or suggest an alternative? Thank you in advance for your response.
@dark_corner_studio ,I want to buy the streamer x but I would like to use it with the blue yeti (usb microphone),is it compatible ? Thanks in advance for your help!
No sorry.
This thing is only xlr
How much audio channel i can create with the Unify Software?
I returned mine. There was echo in the headset and the audio on the capture card was awful.
Question can the streamer x power up the se dynacaster?
Of course!
But does it work with a U87
Can you disable direct monitoring (not listening to yourself)
I would love to see 3 xlr input & 3 hdmi input for video Switching
Thanks for the video 👍my unit is on the way. Have you tried using two rode wireless 🛜 🎤 at the the time ? Or one wireless and one xlr and one usb mic in the same time ?
