I never knew there were Wicked haters. I saw it in a packed theater and plenty of people were singing along. Yes, it was not a great movie, but neither is 95% of the MCU.
I just knew Amanda was gonna come through with a take on Wicked 🤣 “Not for me on about 8 different levels” “I didn’t respond to it in any way and in fact thought it was sort of boring and bad, personally”
wicked the stage show has actually had huge success in international productions over the past twenty years! i’m sure there are indeed high schoolers in japan blasting the wicked soundtrack on the daily :)
is it me or isnt the whole point of cynthia's character in wicked to be seen as the outcast? If she's the outcast and hated for all of her life, i dont think she's going to have a personality that matches ariana grande's character. Not sure i understand that criticism. It's also a good balance to have someone act more serious instead of having everyone all goofy or bubbly.
I'm very glad Amanda's back, but I am also very ready for this podcast to stop talking about Wicked. Baffling takes! But if everyone had the same taste in film, we'd all be bored, I guess.
Yall please do some more wicked research on the plot the dance was supposed to be that alfaba doesn’t know how to behave or dance and so Glinda dances awkwardly with her so she isn’t embarrassed it’s meant to be awkward and make you uncomfortable 😣 I’m not even a huge wicked fan and I got that part
It’s a mindset Amanda just doesn’t have, which is so fair. Don’t agree with any of her takes… like I can’t wait to watch Wicked on repeat when we can stream it.
Welcome back Amanda!! I had my son about a month before she did and we're going back to work around the same time she seems a lot more excited than I am tho lol
FINALLY!!! It’s nice to find others who feel the same way as I do. I completely agree with you guys about Kieran Culkin in A Real Pain. I think I prefer actors who transform & not just play in their wheelhouse. I honestly think Best Supporting Actor is a stacked category this year. I don’t just want Kieran to sweep. I’d love to see Guy Pearce win. One was my favourite performance of the year in The Brutalist & such a character actor.
Here we go, back to high school, where the musical theater fans are the butt of the joke.. If you don't like musicals, than just state that and carry on. Why tear the movie apart with ridiculous points? Bothered by a singing goat in Wicked? The goat being able to talk/sing is pretty integral to the whole plot 🙄
Wicked is realistically not going to win best picture but the constant bashing by mostly film bros and snobs about even the potential is getting a bit old. Heaven forbid people (especially women) like it and it’s actually made money compared to most best picture winners in the last 10 years besides Oppenheimer. This attitude is why people don’t watch the Oscars or care about this industry anymore!
As a Brazilian, I'm kind of sad that Sean didn't dedicate more time to I'm Still Here these past few weeks. I was glad for the couple of shoutouts Joanna Robinson gave it when she was on, but I believed that they would talk about it this episode a little more than just a snarky remark about Brazilians' intense presence on social media (which, even though I'm kind of doing it right now, doesn't seem to be the case here in this comments section). I mean, Variety did predict a Globe win for Torres in the Best Actress - Drama category (which I think is highly improbable, but what do I know), and I was hoping that Sean or Amanda would approach the film with more than just a hand waive (I hope Amanda watches it, there's a chance she'll like it more than Sean). This is more a lament than a criticism; I do understand that one of the main focuses of the pod is to highlight Hollywood cinema, as they reiterate at the first half of this episode. But another big focus is the awards race, and it seems that I'm Still Here has a slightly bigger place in it than they gave it on the pod so far. I guess they could give it a little more time if it gets the International Feature nomination at the Academy Awards (probable) and if Torres can nab a Best Actress nod (it would make me very happy, but I think it's extremely unlikely). Since I think there's little chance of Torres winning the Globe or getting the Oscar nom, I believed this episode had the best odds of them talking about the film. Oh, well. Anyway, just wanted to point out that the pod has loyal and enthusiastic listeners in Brazil and we would be delighted if one of our own got more coverage on the pod. Cheers.
In Conclave, I think if Lawrence knew Benitez's secret earlier, he would remove Benitez from the conclave itself in one way or another. Lawrence is decided to keeping the integrity of the process above all else and having Benitez around knowing that, I think he would see that as going against the process. The end is indeed silly but it is easier for Lawrence to ignore it when the process is over.
I just want to point out that most of us true Latinos (the ones living in Latin America) hated Emilia Pérez. The dialogues were incredible to read (because we couldn’t understand their broken spanish) in the worst way possible. And the press tour has been horrible for everyone in LatAm, except for Zoe Zaldaña. To sell this as Latin art is the most colonialist thing I’ve seen in years from Hollywood.
Golden globes have been an annual traditional whipping boy. They deserve better for bringing a spotlight to several under seen tv series over the years e.g. The Office (UK) and Mozart in the Jungle. And, they’ve given awards to the deserving Tom Cruise while the Academy remains bizarrely mute on the man (Sam Jackson has an honorary and Cruse has nothing?). And Ricky Gervais nuff said. Cut them some slack.
Here are the lists of nominees that I hope that wins the 2025 Golden Globes: Best Motion Picture- Drama: A Complete Unknown or Dune: Part 2 Best Motion Picture- Comedy or Musical: Wicked or Emilia Pérez Best Animated Feature Film: The Wild Robot Best Non-English Language: Emilia Pérez (France) Best Actor in a Motion Picture- Drama: Timothée Chalamet- A Complete Unknown as Bob Dylan Best Actress Performance in a Motion Picture- Drama: Kate Winslet- Lee as Lee Best Actor Performance In A Motion Picture- Comedy or Musical: Jesse Eisenberg- A Real Pain as David Kaplan or Glen Powell- Hit Man as Gary Johnson Best Actress Performance in a Motion Picture- Comedy or Musical: Cynthia Erivo- Wicked as Elphaba Thropp Best Supporting Actor: Edward Norton- A Complete Unknown as Pete Seeger Denzel Washington- Gladiator II as Macrinus or Kieran Culkin- A Real Pain as Benji Kaplan Best Supporting Actress: Ariana Grande- Wicked as Galinda Upland Best Director: Jacques Audiard- Emilia Pérez Best Screenplay: Jacques Audiard- Emilia Pérez or Jesse Eisenberg- A Real Pain Best Original Score: Clément Ducol and Camille - Emilia Pérez or Kris Bowers - The Wild Robot Best Original Song: “El Mal” (Clément Ducol, Camille, and Jacques Audiard) - Emilia Pérez And last but certainly not least… BEST CINEMATIC & BOX OFFICE ACHIEVEMENT: DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE ❤️💛
Something I've always wondered whenever Sean talks about watching stuff with his daughter - do people in the U.S. regularly watch entire movies (let alone a three-and-a-half-hour plot-heavy musical like Wicked) with their three-year-olds, or is this a Sean thing? I'm not judging, just really curious. I live in Germany, and just letting your three-year-old watch half an hour of kids TV is considered controversial here (which doesnt mean a lot of people don't do it).
I mean to be fair this podcast isn’t about movies being “fun” it’s about how the two hosts navigate their daily existential crises through the lens of the film industry, and sometimes they enjoy movies.
Wicked is not the front runner! It’s just it has momentum because it was screened on the cusp of awards nominations. Anora, Conclave and The Brutalist is still the front runners.
Bakelite DVD cases. One of those niche labels Bobby is getting in to should do it. I'd pay like $15 more if the cases were visually appealing enough to not feel deep self-loathing by displaying them
I'm just imagining the future where Wicked wins Best Picture and then Wicked: For Good (AKA Part 2) disappoints (which is not out of the realm of possibility given there is a sentiment that the second act of Wicked is not as good as the first). If that is the case, then Wicked is going to looked back on in the group of bad Best Pictures (I'd say worst since Green Book but for a different reason than Green Book).
I'd be excited about Soto as well if I was Sean but I hope he realizes their lineup is legitimately bad outside of Lindor and Soto(if Vientos has a "sophomore" slump my goodness it's ugly) and that rotation is dog poop unless Sengai is healthy and dominant. Bunch of 4s and 5s. Edit: he knows lol. Y'all need Alonso badly.

What about when Verne Troyer’s nudes leaked?
DOBBB MOBBB, let’s freaking go!!! The grin on my face right now. What an episode to return for 🙏

I came to this podcast for Sean via The Rewatchables, I remain for Dobbins. Haters suck it.
☝🏿Literally, some of the comments are unhinged with their Amanda takes! She rocks!
50 minute 'catch up with Amanda' segment - we have never been so back
It's so obvious how much Sean missed Amanda - the banter and ribbing are so lively between them
Amanda's back, LET'S GO!!! WICKED HATERS, STAND UP!!

It’s like you two watched a version of Wicked from an alternate universe. In the words of the great David Lynch, open your hearts or die.
They didn't like the movie. That's okay. You can. Weird use of a quote about transphobes, frankly.
Lynch was talking about transphobes, not movie preferences.
Oh love that quote!
I'm shocked she's back so soon. She deserves a good 18 months.

lbr, it's marketed at women/girls, so it's automatically down a few notches for the film bros
