Despite having traveled to 50 countries around the world, the US and Mexico would still be my top 2 choices even if I was no longer wanting to live in the good ole USA. For my 3rd choice, I’d probably pick another affordable country with nice people. Several SÉ Asia options sound good. Malaysia will be fine I guess.

After living many years in the US, then in Europe, then in Asia, plus long visits to Africa and Latin America, I finally made my choice of a place to spend the last years of my life.... and I chose Mexico. After almost 15 years and now in my old age, I can safely say that what I get in Mexico is a very high "quality of life". The weather, the culture, the diversity and the food are very attractive. But so are the friendly people, excellent health care, the freedom (yes, I feel oppressed every time I visit the US), the landscapes and the undeniable fact that my savings go a long way in Mexico. Many people in the US ask me if Mexico is safe... strange question coming from a country with daily mass shootings, but my answer to them is: the three times I was mugged in my life, it happened in the US.

From my experience you need at least 2 years to understand if you like to really live in a place. In the beginning you're kind of a long term tourists. It's things like coping with the plumber, going to the doctor, taking the car to the garage, passing time with local friends (not aquaintances, real friends) that make you understand what a place is really like.
Also it depends on one's budget and if you have kids.
I chose to live in Greece because people there are great with children and generally Greeks are very hospitable and friendly. The nature is beautiful and you don't have to pay anything to go to the beach or take a walk in the nature. So even if you don't have much money you can still enjoy the beauty of the place. Also the weather is a plus for me. The islands usually have a lovely breeze in summer and the winters there are milder than on the mainland. The quality of the food in Greece is very good, especially fruits and vegetables are fresh and tasty. Greece is also quite safe, the crime rate is low.

Twenty years ago I retired and after pre-planned research trips visiting many places from Pacific islands to Turkey and from US northern border to Colombia passing through Florida and the Keys ~ decided to move to Mexico. I reevaluate every year! ... and I am still here in Mexico. Travel in Winter in Mexico, travel to the US in Summer to visit family and the rest of the world in Spring and Fall. Do not let the sensationalist news headlines cloud your judgement. Mexico is a big country, all climates present from tropical beaches and jungles to great forests, snow capped mountains and great deserts and plains. Many ancient and modern cultures. Immigrants from all over as it was the center of the world trade for 300 years. See history of the dollar ! Rich history and many native cultures and archeological sites. Friendly people and great food. Paradise is not perfect but it is still paradise.

I have a friend who has been in many countries that I haven't been in, and he remarked that he liked Malaysia very much. To put it in the rather simplistic way he did, he said there are three main groups of people: Chinese, Indians and Malays. He said the Chinese basically run most things, the Indians do most of the physical labor, and the Malays, knowing they have a good situation, tend to avoid causing any conflict, and enjoy the situation. If this is true, it's probably more so in the Peninsula although he had visited East Malaysia.
I recall reading a comment (although I don't recall whether it was from Malaysia or Indonesia) regarding the Muslims and attitudes toward other religions that went "this isn't the Middle East" meaning that different groups were accepted and the Muslims weren't antagonistic toward other groups, and religious terrorists/extremists weren't an issue there.

You mentioned you have a house in Colombia. Most ex-pats select Puerto Rico, Mexico, Costa Rica, or Ecuador but Colombia is a bit more hard-core - it has tougher immigration rules relative to Costa Rica and Ecuador.
