@anamericaninbangkok Thailand is what I call a "value destination" for both tourists, expats and potential expats. Quite simply, if you have the funds, there are better, cleaner, less corrupt and more developed places to live with a greater political stability. Also, China has a huge amount of influence here (like it does in my countries). This is coming from someone who has lived in the country for nearly 30 years.
I love the place, however if I were an ultra high net worth individual, I would only live here part-time (at most) and would live elsewhere for the remainder of the time.
Thailand isn't what it used to be, my priorities have changed, the country has become oversaturated as a tourist destination and now there are more and more Chinese moving and visiting as well as Indians and Russians. The vibe is much different than when I first moved here and as a family man, the reason we stay here is because of the value (which is slowly diminishing), our kids are still in school, the friendly people and also it's fairly safe.
We are considering other places to live in the next few years.

Since I'm not a "capitalist" myself at least so far, I'm not necessarily a money-driven person (don't get me wrong here please), but I'm a nomad and have been moving to places that at some point there's a strong inner pull to move in to. All this to say that I came to Estonia this year because of that inner calling that I never really know where comes from, and starting to rearrange things to move my fiscal address here and being strongly puzzled - not understanding all the buzz around how tax friendly Estonia is/was. Really! And sometimes people saying 'oh, moving to Estonia, lucky you' thinking about the low taxes I'd pay and I was like "how come? I don't see any of that. Is it because I'm not into this field and I'm not seeing it properly? I'm gonna pay more taxes than in PT where I'm from (I also include the social taxes here and all the just/unjust way of paying it as a freelancer no matter if you have income or not in some cases, situation that in PT, finally, they started to do something about it) ... Anyway, just to say that I found your channel these days and this video was very important 'cause I've been feeling like a freak among the general opinion in and out nomad community about Estonia. Thanks!

There are MUCH better and safer places within the same country. There's no need for a local Chilean as your companion down south, however, it may be your best bet in the central section of the country, esp. if you're of African descent (Black). I do wish that the tax was a bit lower but a bigger issue is that housing prices are going up way too much, at least in the capital where I live. It's good if you invested a long time ago or if you wanna own land in the countryside, but for anyone younger, that's considering moving here, I'd suggest going somewhere else. You'd get more bang for your buck in other places. Healthcare is pretty good, fast, and cheap, but that's the same in most of the EU.

Having said that I got myself one because ...i wanted to say I had one... hey, there's lots of ways to waste EUR 100! On the other hand if looking for a bit more sophisticated lifestyle or looking for a place to do business IMO Thailand isn't the best either. After going to both Belize and Costa Rica I can't see why I'd ever return to Belize. I'm not into scuba diving which should be considered it's primary attraction. Land activities are two and three hour drives versus fifteen minutes in Costa Rica. I tell people that Belize is Costa Rica's kid brother.

About Thailand, I feel Bangkok is like the Asian NY of the nomad world. U can enjoy territorial taxation, the beach and Bangkok if u like it so again I don't completely disagree as I'm not the typical big city guy and yeah Thailand really should create a net of mid-sized cities cause rn I feel Thailand is Bangkok

@Bob Johnson Hi Bob, Where did you stay? It's possible that different locations could provide varied experiences.
We stayed on the small Caye Caulker.
In general, I think that there are friendlier, safer options available.
The tourist visa of 30 days was inconvenient for us. Mexico (as one example) in comparison offers a 180 day tourist visa for Canadians.
Each of us value different things, so what is best for you, is best.
How many other countries have you also spent significant time in for consideration?
My best advice is: look at more countries than you originally planned on, and spend more time in those countries than you think you need to. Try before you buy!🥂
      Also rainy season=no bueno.

people and places like cayo, orange walk and corozal are cool!¡ san pedro and other islands are good too but they are a little to much for me.

One thing that would make me pick Thailand over Malaysia is the food. It's very personal so everyone will have different opinion about it and it's OK. Sun and beaches can be found in many places but the overall attitude toward food in Thailand does it for me.

    • @ronagoodwell2709
      @ronagoodwell2709 3 года назад

Me too. The variety of foods is amazing. And there's food everywhere. Or, there used to be, before the pandemic. But since Thais are obsessed with food, I expect it to return. Less so in Malaysia. Besides, a lot of Malaysian food comes from Thailand, produce in particular. Most Malays refuse to work in agriculture. They get special treatment from their government, so they don't have to.

I still think an EU passport option is better than none. I hear on this channel about having “insurance.” I think that is a good way to look at it. There are times when traveling as an American has advantages, but if I travel as an EU citizen, it may get me coverage in places where Americans aren’t as welcome or the ability to travel, live, and work in most of Europe without restriction. I could get Italian citizenship by descent and I can prove it can be done, but the amount of paperwork required is too insane to attempt by ourselves. It’d be nice to have a backup plan, but I don’t have the kind of liquidity that this group tends to target as clients (we’re middle class).

Portugal should be on this list instead of Belize. Belize is an english speaking country. Expats from Canada and USA are paying a premium for real estate in Belize for not having to learn a new language. Worth it, IMO. Belize QRP is advertised on websites as the only way in, not so. $250k investment gets you permanent residence right away. Or just live in the country for 50 weeks straight by renewing your monthly tourist visa and apply for PR after that. Belize is a territorial tax country with 0 % tax on foreign sourced income. To sum up English speaking, territorial tax, easy to migrate to. Underrated.
