  • Starting my 1977 Dolomite 1300, at about -3 degrees Celsius here in Glasgow.
    (Yes, I misspelled "position". No I don't care enough to fix it.) ;)

    My Dad used to rig up a couple of 100W light bulbs on an extension lead and leave them lit up under the bonnet overnight when it was cold. No probs starting then :)

    I had a triumph 1300 . Never had troubles starting it in any weather . Choke fully out X it would start . Leave for 1 minute X then put choke in half way . . . X drive off. Then put choke in when it got warmer . . Give the car chance to warm up when it's cold it's common sense as the oil is thick when you start it up first thing in the morning X need fuel to the carb

      I've used the Dolomite as a daily driver on and off for the last 5 or so years doing 20-40 miles a day with relatively few problems considering the car is 40 years old. The vast majority of it's problems have been caused by shoddy reproduction parts being inferior to the originals and old bodywork repairs turning out to be very shoddy!

      Couldn't agree more, some of the cheap repo parts I've had are just fit for the bin. Before now I've fitted condensers from well know suppliers that have lasted 10 miles if your lucky. Then to find a NOS condenser and it'll last as it was intended to. But don't get me started, great seeing you use your dolly like how it was intended to be used :)

    My Leyland Princess 1800 HL wasn`t keen on starting on a fairly normal autumn morning, temp. about +2 celsius. Needed pre- heating, all the dizzyjobs were spot on, sparkplugs, carb also. My Volvo 144 1971 never missed a beat, even coldstart -25 celsius with a dead battery. And that`s fairly cold, even here in Finland. In some old Finnish BL- products importer ad they were suggesting Princess as a "Your new winter car?" over Saab and Volvo. Well that did not never happen.

    My dolomite would barely turn over one morning in winter. Thick oil and cold battery. I whipped the battery out and left it on the kitchen radiator to thaw out - then it started fine!!

    All the Dolomites I've owned never had any trouble starting, hot or cold weather. It's usually down to pitted points in the dizzy, 5 minute gapping job once a month :-)

    • @CaptainSlow1992
      @CaptainSlow1992  5 лет назад +1

      Mine had electronic ignition which seemed to be failing so was swapped back out for a properly gapped points system in late November this year, along with a general service/clean up of the carb, at which point the car became a much more reliable starter and ran far better.
      However the engine then dropped a big end bearing on the M74 at 65mph a few weeks later in so I need to fit a new engine!

    Great car. If the ignition and carburetor are good, should start fine even at -40. Not sure how cold that was, but appeared to be a normal day for us here.

      I remember when Nissan was doing cold weather testing on the second generation Altima. Their cold weather testing was done outside Timmins, Ontario, Canada. Their goal for that fuel injected car was that it start on the first try at -40 degrees 85% of the time. Our 81 Volvo with single side draught Zenith carburetor started first go every time as long as we did not use Shell or Esso petrol. With Esso, it would not idle in any weather.

    Think you need electronic ignition and Weber carb kit with electronic choke or throttle body kit to get more bhp out of that engine

    What did you find your Dolomite like starting on a really cold morning when it hadn't been used for some time? In the winter will it start without choke?

    • @CaptainSlow1992
      @CaptainSlow1992  4 года назад +2

      I rarely bother trying to start it in really cold weather as generally the battery would go flat before it fired.
      Once the ignition system and carb was serviced it stopped being a problem, when cold it'd always need a bit of choke for initial starting though.

  • @willswheels283
    @willswheels283 5 лет назад +2

    If everything is set up right it should start 1st or 2nd attempt.
    Used to make me wonder why on earth people who owned older cars in the 70/80’s would continually crank the engine until the battery went flat, there was obviously a problem.
    But a nice Dolly mate, got loads of character.

    • @CaptainSlow1992
      @CaptainSlow1992  5 лет назад +2

      I tweaked all the carb linkages and mixture some time later and found it was running a bit too lean and also over-choking. Also swapped out the electronic ignition unit for the original points system as it seemed to be failing. That pretty much sorted the starting issues!

      @@willswheels283 just a well worn engine. 138,000 miles and probably never rebuilt judging by the poor valve sealing, ruined rockers and piston slap!

    Heer Howe to use a choke in the conditions u are in pull out the choke all the way pump five times on the gas pedal then crank for a maximum of ten second until the engine starts leave 20seconds between cranking to prevent over working the starter once started let the car heat up for three minits on full choke and then 2 minits on half choke after this period of time push the choke back in and don't pedle pump while cranking u wil flood it
