What was your Austin like starting on a really cold morning when it hadn't been used for several days? Would it start without using the choke?

Generally first time, always a rich mixture needed to start with cold engine, a good battery helps, this battery is 8 years old and past its best. I suppose I can do one if there is demand for such a video now the mornings are frosty.

I'm old school and back in the day had two Allegros series 1, 1300 and series 3 1750.
My father also owned two 1300 and 1500.
To answer your question and this applies to all cars with chokes not just Allegro's.
On cold mornings a choke is ALWAYS needed to start an engine .
If you are able to start an engine on a cold morning without using a choke then the carburettor needs adjustment.
This indicates that the mixture is too rich and fuel is being wasted .
You should also be able to smell an engine that is running too rich there will be a very ' heavy' smell of fuel.
Great video and wish I still owned my Allegros, allas company cars meant they had to go as couldn't afford to run two cars .
      Happy days!

Hi yes it came from Devon area, the supplying dealer was Blackler's of Paignton and I bought the car from a gentleman in Totnes. First owner was an ex-Austin employee.

Anyone would have thought that you'd left that car sat for years, try starting a mini that hasn't run for 20 years......and by the way your clutch bearing is knackered by the sound if it.

Clutch bearing replaced, better cars than Minis, I scrapped one recently the engine was the best thing about it.

Nice video. Always annoyed me that BL changed the grille for the 1100 to underline that the car had the smallest engine available.
I think it would have started easier wiith full choke imho.
Did you realise that, for the most recent Allegros, the 1100 A series was replaced by the 1000 A+ series engine? Apparently the 1100 was dropped and the Allegro got the same engines as were available for the Metro. I was educated by a thread on the Austin Rover Online site:-
    www.aronline.co.uk/?s=allegro
What isn't clear at first is that the ARO site has some obscure articles that have nothing to do with cars, like this feature on the BR Class 91 locomotive:-
    www.aronline.co.uk/rail-projects/high-speed-trains-class-91-a-potential-never-realised/

As you have observed regarding the grille, the 1100 DL (this car) should have a horizontal bright aluminium bar with black surround grille. Same for the 1300 DL but these models are rare because most buyers opted for the 1300 SDL I think. As you will have observed mine has a hybrid grille with the vertical 1300 SDL bars and a Series 2 bright anodized aluminium surround, probably the replacement for an accident damaged original.
