    Almost seems like a custom PCI Riser card would be a better solution for this case.

    • @NotFromConcentrate
      @NotFromConcentrate  7 лет назад +16

      Great point and sharp eye! Actually, a riser card is impossible without a two piece design, and going with a flexible riser saves a significant amount of space believe it or not. The MINI's ribbon design allows for the closest possible placement of the expansion card keys to the I/O shield aperture. This saves approximately .352L of volume in the dead center of the chassis!!! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

      You can so an S shaped riser card like what is used in the Savage case ModMasters made a few years back. just add an extra screw to provide some stability or even rig a way for the card to provide the stability in a hook and key method.

    This is really awesome. I think I need to get one for my next build. The only think I might like to see is maybe a way to do a slim/slot load optical drive mount maybe where the SSDs mount. I have a hand full of slim/slot load DVD and Blu-ray drives and while a lot of people no longer use them, some people still do. Can't wait till these are back in stock.

    Since the cover plate slides in on one side, all you really need is a single screw on the opposite side the kept if from sliding out. And you could make a little wraparound lip for a thumbscrew so it's tucked away in the back. The fewer screws required the better. ;)

    Have you considered sending out a few of these to the big tech channels? Tekthing just did a Patreon-exclusive build and I was really intrigued by the chassis. Immediately RUclipsd and was kinda bummed that there wasn't more coverage. You do a good job here of showcasing it, but more exposure can't be bad, right?
    I think this case would be awesome to showcase VR for various companies. Just strap an R9 Nano in there and it's a total beast!
    Loving looking through all of the hardware you've put together. The S4 Mini is a thing of beauty, and at a reasonable price: seriously, great work.

    Hey! Video on Christmas, ha. I did not realize you actually design cases! That explains your level of professionalism. I thought these cases were off of newegg or something. I may ask for your help in terms of designing cases, if you use software, what your process is, etc. I posted on the previous video that I'm trying to design and build custom Sim Consoles myself! Thanks!

    Hi Josh,
    I am sooooooooo happy that i stumbled across your channel.
    I came across your vids because I'm looking for the best ideas for an itx build.
    your SFF case looks amazing and due to my budget I am getting a $40 case .
    But I am definitely trying to get this for Q1 of 2019. Its too great to pass up lol
    I wanted to see if you think my current build would fit in the S4 Mini.
    I would also need to switch to dc-dc
    Thanks again for being the person you are !!!!
    I am grateful that you shared your knowledge and hardworking faith !!!!!!!

      You don't have to mod anything for plenty of great power. I just do a lot of modding videos because it is fun and people ask for them. I also have plenty of videos on the DC-DC power supplies so you can learn all about them. Thanks for watching! :D

    I like the video but I dont know if this is for me. I just watched a video about a STX barebone system from Asrock. They make several versions of the Asrock Mini Box 110/131W/GTX RX. The last high end version comes with an Nvidia 1060 Mobile video card and runs about $780 to $800. It runs off a 19V power brick. I like how you can use any 65 watt rated CPU and it is designed to use less power and use Sodim DDR4 up to 32 GB. There is room for 2 SSD on the back with special combo drive connectors on the bottom of the motherboard. It also has a micro sd flash reader port. In case you want to load Linux with that or use with a low power CPU. The 110 version can use lower end CPU's like Gen 6 CPU's.

    Imagine the gpu upward on the motherboard as usual, Pico Psu on upper side, and a larger Cpu cooler matching the GPU height, shaves the length and and adds height but allows the case to sit flat being more stable than a book sitting flat.

      Not From Concentrate Do I bind myself to buy if I sign up for the waiting list? I would like to know what different options you have for offer.
      Also, Is it really possible to run a 6700K + GTX 1070 (both stock speeds) on a single HDPLEX and without over heating the system?

    • @NotFromConcentrate
      @NotFromConcentrate  8 лет назад

      It's just a waiting list to get a order-form. There is no pressure. On the order form it lets you know all the options. To answer your second question I really recommend watching my video where I show the 1080 being powered off the HDPLEX, which pulls 270w under load. So a 1070 is well in range (220w from my measurements).

    • @Wistbacka
      @Wistbacka 8 лет назад

      Not From Concentrate I noticed I had watched the video, but I had forgotten that it actually featured a 6700K. Thanks man!
      What kind of heatsink/fan-setup would you recommend for running a 6700K in the S4 mini and what temps would that yield? I mostly do gaming and video rendering.
      Why choose the S4 over the S3?
      Finally, I know you love your Dell 330 W PSUs, but what about the ~360W bricks that come along with many of sager, Asus, Alienware and MSI flag ship laptops? And is it not most optimal to run a PSU at max 80 %?

    With cards like the RX 480 reaching 100*C on the VRMs and the back of the GPU would it be an issue for the SSDs being so close?

    • @NotFromConcentrate
      @NotFromConcentrate  8 лет назад +1

      The 480 is disappointingly hot--my benchmark system puts it at 245W system draw (the 1080 is 270!). The 1060 outscores the 480 in DX11 (and loses by a small tad in DX12) but full system draw is 178w. The 480 is AMAZING crossfired, but for a single card it is best to go with the 1060. To answer your question more directly...the 2.5" SSDs can take a ton of heat. I've blasted them with a heatgun to 105C case temp without problems so I don't think that would be an issue--keep in mind that you aren't getting 100C RADIATED heat, nowhere close to that. The hottest the 970 got was 50C radiated temp (the heat that reaches the chassis over time) and that isn't enough to hurt the SSD. Still, cooler is better, and I highly recommend the 1060. Thanks for the question!

  • @gtechzero7668
    @gtechzero7668 7 лет назад +4

    Hmm ..i think the problem with this is the price. For actually "make it happen" is need of around 300$ if i understand well. I mean the power supply+adapters and the pci express riser. Well that, in my opinion, is half price of an actually itx i5 build w/o graphic card...wich is kinda big and for example, there are silverstone option regarding a slighter bigger case but hey is 80 $. Just an opinion....

    • @NotFromConcentrate
      @NotFromConcentrate  7 лет назад +5

      When I started making these the industry was chock-full of mini-itx cases made out of thinly-stamped steel wrapped in cheap paint and plastic trim. I didn't know if anyone else cared about craftsmanship and material quality in this market so using my life's savings to make 100 of these was a pretty scary risk--especially when they were sold at cost. I am still blown away by the response; not just customers who love the MINI, but now the industry has shifted and boutique luxury mini-itx chassis are thriving. You are right, the MINI is brutally expensive, but I try to make it worth it. But if it doesn't make sense, thank goodness there are lots of options now for customers with all sorts of budgets and priorities. Peace to you and thank you for commenting!

      Thank you for your comment! While there isn't room to put dual HDPLEX inside the S4 Mini, you don't really need to anyways. One HDPLEX will power a 6700 and a GTX 1070, and I'm not sure what more hardware you could actually physically fit inside. That is a pretty awesome system. Peace!

    Wiki lists the GTX960 as 120w TDP, if paired with a 35w TDP intel processor, with a single M.2 SSD, and assuming just the integrated single fan on a stock 960 and a single fan on the CPU, is this too close to max draw for the Pico PSU?

    • @NotFromConcentrate
      @NotFromConcentrate  9 лет назад

      +Sean Crees I haven't personally tested that card, but ASSUMING it keeps in bounds of 120w then that combo should be perfect for the Pico 160XT. I can say I have built many systems with 65w CPUs (i7 4790s) + the R7 260x which has a TDP of 115w--in theory this is pushing the limit much harder, but the 260x does a great job of keeping in bounds. I hear nothing but good things about Nvidia's power management, but it is not something I have first hand experience with.

    One request: Can you please try fitting an HD PLEX 250W and PFM4414VB6M24D0C00 internal power supply inside an S4 mini to make a kick ass system without any external power brick ? Many thanks in advance.

      I forgot to add:
      1. PFM series PSUs require AIM1714 series (also thin and small) input modules (basically AC rectifiers).
      2. Both the input module and power supply can be mounted to the chassis for passive cooling

    Would it be possible to use this case with an external desktop modular power supply and extra long cables from cable mod or something? Then you could make a nice small PSU enclosure and wrap up all the cables in a cable management sheath that you can find on Amazon. Would that over power the system or would it be safe to use it? I would feel much more comfortable using a desktop PSU. I am sure that Pico PSU's are legit but it would be a bit scary to use one for a gaming rig. Any thoughts on this idea? Would it be possible to mod it for that? Also any chance of modding it to fit a 240mm AIO liquid cooler?

      I dunno if you have checked out my other videos, but I have been powering 1070 and 1080 GPUs with 6700Ks now for months off the HDPLEX so I don't think you need to be afraid of them. However to directly answer your question, you absolutely can. Check out this build where one of my amazing customers does exactly what you are talking about: goo.gl/vSpsev

      I haven't had a chance to watch your other videos yet. You are one of the only people making videos about Pico PSU's and I wonder if the PSU companies don't want us to know that there are other safe ways to get power to our rigs without buying from standard PSU companies like EVGA and Corsair, etc. Ah well thanks for the reply! Would a Pico PSU be strong enough to power an i5 4690k and a GTX 970? Or at least an i5 4690k and GTX 1050? Thanks!

    • @DoomWalker42

      Would it be possible to make one side of the case a heatsink for the CPU to negate the need for any fans? Then the other side can be ventilation like you have already and you will have a truly silent mobile PC! There are lots of fanless PC's out there but they already use proprietary power supplies. I think that this would be really cool and unique and definitely set your case apart from other builders. It might also add more structural integrity to the case not that there isn't any, anyways. Just a thought but one day I will save up money for a new system and try it out in this case! :)

      No worries! The forum that you linked me to helped me out a lot. Problem is I just got the Fractal Design Nano S and my components are too powerful to run on a Pico PSU. I really like the portable design however though I might suggest the option to swap out the SSD bracket and add in an HDD bracket if that's not included already. And maybe a CD/DVD drive though one could always use an external one.

    • @NotFromConcentrate

      +Sentinel Polaris
      Well the problem isn't really the DC-DC board, it is the power brick. The HDPLEX might have a hard power cap before electronics shut it off, but that would be a rarer thing for DC-DC converters. Check out this other video I made on that subject:
      ruclips.net/video/6Qh1qU0XG78/видео.html
      The issue is the power brick, and finding a 450 watt power brick that is certified would be hard. You could use the HDPLEX ATX Modular Bridge Input Board and just use a full sized power supply outside your chassis.
      At the end of the day there are side effects that you need to worry about. If you really need a 450w PSU to power your system some of that is going to end up as heat, and the S4 really isn't designed for high-TDP systems. While I do have customers who have stable systems with 88w CPUs and 970s, they don't draw anywhere NEAR 450w and they can get pretty hot. The only reason I would consider a 450w PSU would be for the R9 Nano...which runs cool because it has an average TDP that is pretty low, but can spike really high for miliseconds at a time.
      ruclips.net/video/cfwHVvk3su4/видео.html
      Good luck!

    • @NotFromConcentrate
      @NotFromConcentrate  9 лет назад

      +Corruptedfile With an HDPLEX and the Voodoo Firebird 350w power brick you would have the power part covered (in theory). It might be a bit hot and noisy, but it could work. As for the 970 FITTING...there are some models that I haven not tested and are extremely oversized...like the Asus 970. *edit* Two customers have reported the Asus 970 fitting, but I haven't seen pictures yet to let you know how easy it would be!"

    • @NotFromConcentrate
      @NotFromConcentrate  9 лет назад

      +Nicolas Veron What you need to know is the TDP of your system. It seems that the TDP of the i5 4440 is 84w, and the TDP of the 950GTX Mini is 90w. That is a bit too high to recommend for the Pico. If you were to move to a CPU with a TDP of 35w you would be much closer and I personally would give that a try.

      +playstationfx Sorry--you can't use a 3.5" drive in this case while running a GPU. It is just really small and all the space gets used up. You can run dual 2.5" drives with the 750ti though and the Pico 160XT no problem. 2.5" platter drives have really big capacity now (so do SSDs if you can swing it, I sure cant afford a 3TB SDD though xD)

      +AcuraWay With the Voodoo 350w power brick people have achieved this combo, but I personally haven't used a CPU over 65w. I think that CPU would be hot without undervolting but you can't really hurt haswell with heat (but your motherboard can throttle and RAM can get too hot).

      +Not From Concentrate My build Is going to be using 300w max but I really want your case. Can the HDPLEX take that or is there something else I can do like another power supply or would you just recommend throttling to take up less power? If I can fit another power supply in could you tell me how to do it and what I would need? (I don't have the tools or skill to mod or alter anything so modding the supplies or anything else is impossible) Also what would I use to connect that power button to the motherboard and what power brick should I use to give power to the HDPLEX?

      +Bentz The easiest way to get your bulgin switch ready to go is to salvage one of these (or two, if you want to use the LED) from an old PC case.
      Then strip the ends and solder it in! + is voltage plus and - is voltage minus (obviously) for the LED. You will see NC or NO for normally closed or normally open. You probably want to solder the wire to the Normally Open so it closes when you hit the button to power off. Then just solder the wires in! Use heat shrink or electrical tape to make sure they don't short out.
      I should make a video about this since I am asked this question alot. Thanks!
