I make my coffee with a french press and I add the dried orange peel and dried cranberries to the coffee grounds then pour the hot water over it and press.
Glad to see this. Last weekend I dehydrated some ginger that I grated from some ginger I had in the freezer from 2018. It smelled so good, it took about 7 hrs. Then I put it in my coffee grinder and turned it into ground ginger. I got about 10 oz.
I just finished dehydrating lemons and limes. I gave away for Christmas gifts with tea. So many people had no idea you could do it. I did make powder too, but haven’t tried it yet. I thought it would be strong? Doesn’t matter to me, I’m excited to use it. I mixed mine…lemons and limes together. I really love my dehydrated lemons and limes. So pretty on my counter too! ♥️😃
Don't forget that orange oil makes a great cleaner , it's all natural and smells great too. You can also make candied orange peel. I was so very lucky to grow up with a grandmother who found a use for everything.
My favourite use of ground dried lemon zest is to mix it 50/50 with pepper (black or white). Delicious on chicken, fish, pork, you name it. So nice to have it on hand. You didn't talk about the natural disinfectant properties of citrus. I like to use lemons (quartered) in my adult beverage of choice, and when I'm finished I put them into a a plastic bottle (juice, 2L pop, whatever) and top them with vinegar (cheap white distilled). and when the bottle is full let them sit for 3 months or longer. Strain the liquid into a squirt bottle 1 cup at a time and add an equal amount of water (believe me, do NOT use it straight) and it is a perfect all purpose cleaner, good for glass, grease, disinfecting etc, etc, etc. And it smells great. Obviously lasts for years in the vinegar. And if the price of citrus gets too high, I will peel the oranges as I go and just sit them out to dry and store them in a plastic bag until I get enough to fill a container.
I have learned so much from you!!! Your approach is fantastic and I love the way you give us the info without being stuffy and flashy, just like we're neighbors. Thank you for all you have taught me as I have really enjoyed my adventure as a newbie. I am saving up for a "real" dehydrator as the one I have now isn't what I need. Again thanks so much!!!
I’m excited to try this! I’ve been flavoring my soda water with commercial dehydrated lime powder and now I can make my own. Thanks so much for your videos, they are opening my world of preserving food for my family!
Love doing zest...hubs first thought I was nuts...scrubbed it down with baking soda, rinsed well, and zested ALL my citrus as I was using it...putting it in ziplocs storing in the fridge till I had a dehydrator full...THEN used some at Christmas on the ham...he was hooked...lol, if you do navel oranges, the zest is easy to just shave off, mandarins the whole peel is great...and SO many uses, wow...
Just an idea. I turn my zestier upside down so i can see how much I have zested & move it to a small container rather than letting it fall on my cutting board. Every speck counts!
I grow Meyer lemons in a 12 inch pot (it gave me 17 last summer!). which are sweeter, larger, and have thinner, easier to work with skin that makes fantastic dried lemon peel. I juice the lemons, freezing it in 1 tablespoon cubes, then pull out the membranes and dry the peels. There is so little pith I don’t worry about it. I put the dehydrated peel in my coffee grinder and have lots of lemon powder. I love candied orange peel, but don’t have it often as I have largely cut out sugar.
lol yeah I dont keep it on the counter it is in the way at that point. i have a 6ft plastic shelf I got at Lowes (when it was 65.00 think its now like 104.00) but i put it on that along with my vacume sealer, bags, etc keeps it out of the way. So when i do break it out i make it worth wild and do all the apples, oranges ets

I love all citrus and the vivid colors you get when you dry your own zest puts the store-bought to shame. I will be drying an assortment of lemons and oranges this weekend. Thanks so much for sharing your tips and tricks. Hope things cool down to the usual seasonal temps soon. 💖😄👍🍋🍊
I dehydrated lemon peel for zest last night. Fresh lemons from the store. Scrubbed under running water prior to cutting. Trimmed all but a very thin layer of pith off. Rejected any skin with blemishes. 6+ hours at 135F. They turned pink in spots. Has anyone ever encountered this before?
Have loved learning what and how to dehydrate from you. Was so excited about onions. Only problem have had, was small batch of vadallia. Cut small and thin. Did the wk deal and shook. 3 wks latter and when turn jar upside down, couple want to stick. Come off easy enough. No mold or moisture. Think ok? Not sure if need more drying or toss. Suggestions
Citrus is good for dogs as I feed Raw and I cook for mine. So I could use this powder where the fresh squeezed sometimes isnt wanted by Maxi. Thank You
I'm just starting out ... Is it possible to freeze the peels as I use my fruit and then thaw and dehydrate them once I have enough to make it worth it? Tips? Thanks!!
Oh no! Just canned some orange segments and like a fool peeled them leaving the very thick pith on the skin... Now I'm spending hours trying to get the pith off 😞. Wasn't thinking. Silly thing is, I literally just did sliced oranged, still forgot!
You may get some more time out of them, but not enough for me to waste the $ on the bags. But if you already store in mylar, then do it. It would be awful for me
Thanks Darcy for this video! I have learned so much from your videos and website. I do have a question on dehydrated citrus wedges. Can they also be powered once dry? I am a hand/wrist amputee so I do wedges with citrus I pull apart after peeling. A friend gave me a tool from Pampered Chef that I make 4 vertical cuts around them and then peel with my only hand. I can't get the pith off the wedges. That's not a problem for the finished product is it?
Pith ads to the bitterness, so depending on how thick it is, it can take away from the sweetness. I powder citrus whole slices all the time, and find that it evens itself out as long as any one particular fruit doesn't have a very thick pith on it. ruclips.net/video/_NJKyd2o2Uw/видео.html
@@ThePurposefulPantry Thank you for your reply. I'll try one lemon in the dehydrator.. If it's too bitter I guess I'll just dehydrate the peels and make lemonade from the fruit itself! 😊
I dehydrated chicken liver for my dog. How long does it last in the fridge. What to do once I see condensation in the jar? I re-baked it on 365 until dried again allowed cooling many hours and jarred back up and in fridge.
i love your videos, here in the uk im a little late in catching the dehydrator bug but now im truly hooked. after watching this video i now dehydrate the zest and after juicing i also do whats left of the skin along with the pulp inside, this i grind then use it on the garden to deter bugs and the local cat. i do find that the zest flavour deteriores quite quickly, am i doing something wrong?
The temperature knob goes below 150, although that is the lowest number. I live in Maine and we have been hit with huge increases of electricity rates within this last year. Obviously , using a deydrator requires serious thought. I have two Nesco and love them, just don't use as often as I used to because of the cost. I love your videos.
Hi! I’m trying to make my own lemon pepper seasoning and just started dehydrating my lemons as of last night. They’re completely dried out but have turned a more orangey color than a yellow and I’m fearful that I’ve perhaps burned them instead of merely dehydrated them. They aren’t black or brown at all, but definitely have a golden orangey hue to them. Should I discard and start over on another batch and maybe leave them in the air fryer for less time? I put them in my dehydrator of my air fryer on 125 degrees Fahrenheit for about two hours. Is that too long?
Don't leave for less time, just drop the temp - it'll take a little longer to dry - and an air fryer isn't the best means of drying them, but you need to dry them until they dry. If yours is running too hot, drop the temp more.
@@ThePurposefulPantry will do! I ended up dropping the dehydrator setting temp to the lowest available which is 105. I’ll try it out and see how it goes! I can’t use my oven because the lowest temperature on it is 170. The air fryer’s about my only other options besides just letting them sit and dry out for 72 hours by a window sill or something unfortunately. Hopefully this change works!
When collecting the citrus peels to dehydrate, how do you store the fresh peels until you get enough to run the dehydrater? So you freeze them or jar them up and store them in the cupboard or what? I'm going to try to make my own zest but I don't want to peel all my oranges at once because I like to eat them when I want to, not 8-12 at a time!
I tuck them in to baggies and pop in fridge. They typically stay fresh this way for months until I have enough to work with. You can use any citrus peel for this. Also make citrus candy and you can make vitamin C powder add to fav oil and use on the face/body. Make shower soap, so many uses!!
Where do I find that screening you placed on your dehydrating screen? Ok so I can use a paper towel, IF I'm not placing it in to my dehydrator. So I'm still asking where and do I ask for if I'm trying to buy that smaller holed screen?
I get it from Amazon. I have different varieties available, depending on your machine listed in my Amazon store. I tend to purchase the generic 14x14 sheets and cut them to fit: amzn.to/3w4SSb8

I try to always zest my citrus. Picked up some blood oranges yesterday, plan to zest them as I eat them.
This came at a perfect time. I have a lot of lemons and limes .
If you rotate the microplane on the fruit, you get better coverage.
I dry skins (apples oranges etc) and send them to my daugher in law, she makes soap with them
That’s what I’m doing them for too. Just have to get some carrots to dehydrate next ❤️
She can make a dog soap with the dried orange peels to keep fleas away. Fleas hated it.

The white layer on an orange under the zest is very healthy to eat. 👍🏻

Do you ever use grapefruit zest for anything?
I don't personally -but you certainly can!
We use grapefruit zest in alcoholic beverages that have Sprite or 7-Up in them. Like vodka/7. As a good zing to it.
Great demo!
Thank you very much I was looking for an easy way ❤ But can I use the kitchen oven instead of the drying device?
It costs more to use the oven, you can air dry them instead.
