Thanks for showing us how to do this, even us oldies are learning to do food storage. Never too late to learn! Showing how these carrots look after rehydrating them was very good, as many of us have never done any food drying, as a newbie I am very grateful for your excellent method of teaching. You are an excellent teacher.
Thanks for watching!
several years ago i was at the farmers market and one farmer had the most beautiful carrots with more and fresh tops that i have ever seen. I told her i was buying them for the tops, i took them home, dehydrated them and used them all that winter like parsley in some of my veggies casseroles. Of course now I have the chickens who will probably get some of them!
Thank you for making these videos for those of us who cannot afford a freeze dryer. I would also like to appreciate the fact that you speed up the mundane parts of the preparation process instead of stretching it out. And the fact that you get straight to the point and give us valuable content right away the whole time.
I have just discovered you, and I am binge watching you like it's a drama series! 😁
Thank you so much, I'm learning such a lot from you. 😘
I'm so glad!
I go back and rewatch, too! Watching this again as I’m currently dehydrating the chips
I use a stainless kitchen sink scrubbie as a perfect minimal carrot cleaner/peeler. It works great with very little carrot waste.
Genius idea!! Thanks for sharing! (:
Brilliant!!
Perfect! I use a manicure nail brush to clean corn silks off now I have a carrot cleaner
WHAT?!!! I LOVE that chopper/mandolin! Gonna have to look into getting one for my daughter for her birthday along with a dehydrating book. She's really getting into it! Thanks for a great video!
Omgosh! I'm so glad I found you! New to your channel and I subscribed! I love how you thoroughly explain and present everything!
Thank you so much!! You are a fantastic educator, very detailed and cover everything step by step!!! Fantastic video!!!
Just started watching all your video's. I LOVE the slicer you used at around 4.30 time. I need to get me one of those!
That mandolin/ slicer or whatever you call it is awesome!
I’m happy to find you, been watching old videos all morning & taking notes
Glad you like them!
So funny. I am dehydrating carrots this week. Thank you for doing the different experiments for us all. ❤
It's just been a week, but I'm deydrating every day / night. And I keep going to your videos for everything, including refresher courses.
You are very much appreciated.
Thank you Darcy, a friend recommended your channel to me and I've learned so much! Favorites so far are tomato chips, apples, and frozen peas and carrots 😊
Thank you this was great for comparison Darcy! Love the mandolin too
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've come to really enjoy your Saturday afternoon dehydrating videos and look forward to them. That doesn't mean I'm demanding them, ha! Thanks, and take care
Aww - I'm so glad!!!
Yay! I was just hoping you would put up some information on this. Thank you! 🥕🧡
You are so welcome!
I have recently subscribed to your channel and it is awesome, so much useful information. Thank you for your contribution to food preparation, processing and storage. I'm looking forward to learning more from your channel.
Thanks and welcome
Wow! I did not expect them to bounce back like that! Looks like every time I’ve used dried veggies in the past I did not allow them to soak long enough. I’ll be dehydrating more soon after watching this. Thank you!
Thanks finally bought new dehydrator this season. Been a long while. Glad I watched think
Glad I could help
Thank you so much for all your tips. I am so glad I found your channel.
You are so welcome!
Thank you, Darcy. I’m about to finish harvesting my first crop of carrots. I’m going to try dehydrate some for sure…plus the tops to add to green powder. Thank you also for the dehydrating fridge magnets that arrived here (in Australia) a few days ago. 😊
Glad they arrived!
Using frozen has worked best for me! I just bought a slicer like yours, and it is great
Getting my dehydrator tomorrow. Love your channel ❤️
Have fun!
You really do good videos, with helpful information!!! Thank you for sharing!
So nice of you!!
thank you for being so thorough. it really helped when i was cutting up carrots for snack, dehydrating and fermenting. you are a blessing!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for your videos! I dehydrate homegrown carrots, but never thought to do the tops. Your videos are awesome!
You are so welcome!
Thank you! I'm so excited to subscribe & learn more. This week we got a dehydrator & a food grinder.
YAY! Let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you for a great video with a LOT of great information.
I love this you are so precious. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.💓
Thank you so much!
Very good demonstration. Thank you
Thank you.. This years garden is doing great for my Carrots. My other veggies and fruits as well. I will be dehydrating and canning alot this year....
Just recently got into dehydrated foods for our family and doggies. It is only week 2 and loving my Corsiri! Not to mention it’s hurricane season and I’ve been through loosing all our frozen food😢. I can’t wait to go through your older videos and learn lots more!! Thank you❤️
Let me know anytime I can help!
Totally impressive video You provided so much information not contained in other videos. Thanks so much.
So nice of you
Really helpful information. Especially powdering and dehydrated shreds seem the most useful.
Glad you think so!
Wow! You are amazing. So much information.
You answered all my questions. Thank you.
You are a Godsend! Thank you for doing all the different carrot varieties! Also, please assume that as a newbie beginner, I can take all the help I can get, including safe and efficient ways to wash vegetables. I’m getting into preparing larger batches at some points, hence small scale tools and cooking methods may need to be optimized for efficiency. I’m so grateful I found your channel!
Great demonstrations!
Thank you. So happy I found your video. Learnt lots of stuff ... the carrot tops, did not know. RE storage, I started to change over my storage jars from ordinary glass to Miron Glass for extended storage with little or no loss of nutritional value. I mainly store herbs but thinking of venturing into veg and fruit
So informative, thank you so much. So happy to have found you.
Welcome!
I have just prepared my carrots to dehydrate...My first try!
Thanks so much, you have great teaching skills...everything so well explained and demonstrated and with very good visuals to see the end Produkt.
Thank you Darcy 😊
Carrots will be my first dehydrating project this week. I'm going to make a big batch of shreds.
To me the intimidating part of dehydrating is conditioning...and getting it right...no mold !
Thank you for your awesome videos.
How did they turn out??
This was so thorough! Thank you
Darcy, You Rock! Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge and making it easy to understand.
My pleasure!
@@ThePurposefulPantry what takes your videos to the next level is showing us HOW to use the finished product; in this video, I especially appreciate you showing us the rehydration process!! I can't tell you how much of a difference doing this extra step makes. (P.S. do you have a video on dehydrated mirepoix and how to rehydrate for use?)
I dehydrate carrots & greens for my rabbits for winter snacks they love them also helps keep there teeth filed down.
This was a great video, thank you. My carrots are in the DH as I write this. Exciting for me. I'm doing mainly to make powder...
Sounds great!
Thank you for all your info!
My pleasure!
Thank you so much aapke video bahut helpful hai
You are a very interesting and good teacher!
Glad you think so!
Excellent video! I enjoyed it. I did carrots and forgot to blanch. I used them and I didn’t have any problem with them. I now blanch them, but if you forget, I really didn’t think it was that bad. Thanks Darcy! I’m going to shred them next
Sounds great!
I am a very new subscriber and so happy I found you. I just received my dehydrator yesterday. I to am binge watching and will start my first batch tomorrow. You are such a wonderful teacher I feel I have been taught well. I'll be 65 in Oct ( you can always teach a dog new tricks ,just might take me a little longer). Thank you so much !
Have fun!
I’m also 65 in Oct & just bought a dehydrator ;)
I have 5 lbs. of organic carrots and beets coming in Monday and I plan to dehydrate. So I was glad to see this. On a side note, yesterday I dehydrated precooked (pressure) shredded chicken and then dehydrated at 165°. The shreds seem to dehydrate pretty fast! The problem I have is that the shreds are so crispy they deflate the FoodSaver bags! 😲. I lost numerous bags. I didn't figure it out right away. I had to put the shredded chicken in little brown Duro 2 bags then into FoodSaver bags.
Yep - it's why I don't recommend vacuum bags for dehydrated foods - chicken's not the only thing that will puncture.
Love that mandolin!
Thank you for your videos. I bought a dehydrator a few years ago but haven’t used it much. I’m glad I found your channel. I don’t understand buying food at the grocery store like shredded carrots and already shredded cabbage to dehydrate. I have a large garden and orchard and I have a need to dehydrate for food storage. But just buying it at the grocery store to dehydrate I don’t get.
Not all of have the ability to have large gardens (apartment dwellers, people in rentals, people with disabilities who can't physically do it). So if we want shelf-stable foods to have in our pantry for lean times, for times of crisis (think 2020 or job loss), or any other reasons, purchasing from the store IS one of our only options - specially if farmer's markets are not available. Sometimes, using frozen foods to store is easier because all the prep work is done (all cutting and blanching). I buy preshredded carrots and cabbage on clearance to stock up because the prep work is done and it's much cheaper.
Great vid like always thank you
My first bed gave me 3 dehydrators grated carrots and 19 pints! This bed was carrots that didn’t germinate last September so emagine my suprise when February came and I was going out to clean my beds and saw little carrot greens 😁 but my big mistake was not letting my grated carrots to dry on a paper towel 2 it was raining and the moisture in the air didn’t do my dehydrated carrots worth a flip so 3 dehydrators full I had to just dump them as they just didn’t look right. Will try again with this next bed once it’s ready next month and if still rainy with a lot of humidity in air I am just going to slice them and try again.
That mandolin!!!!! I love it!
Love this video💕
Glad you liked it!!
Thanks Darcy! You are a peach!
You're so welcome!
Great video. The unblanched floated for a bit because they are just taking longer to rehydrate initially.
I put powdered carrots and sweet potatoes in the meatballs I canned today. Because I could. ☺️
I realized while you were doing the blanch/nonblanch comparison why I don't: most of my family aren't fans of cooked carrots. I have been just drying plain to powder for in mirepoix powder and other veggie powder mixes. It just never "hit" me why I do it that way. Thanks for the shreds idea. I have been wanting to make carrot cake muffin in a mug but prepping carrots in the morning is a pain! Now I know better!
mirepoix includes onions so I was curious how you handle them, please?
@@RattledEditor Darcy has a whole video and blog post on how to make it. Just Google or go to her blog.
@@cactushermit4274 thx!
Thanks for sharing
That cutting machine you use is fantastic, wow you won’t have to use the electric kitchen machine anymore.
I think Darcy is a trained teacher. I recognize the technique. Though she won't admit it!
It's hard to believe my dehydrator journey started with this video.
Thank you, Darcy. I love to follow your channel. I am learning to do long-term food storage with my Cosori dehydrator. For me, blaching is the way to go. Just now, for the first time doing raw carrots. Could you please reiterate how long you set the timer for 6 full trays on the carrots? Temperature is at 125*. For how many hours?
Thank you again. :)
I don't set it for done. I set it so that it doesn't go off ;) Don't go by time, go by whether produce is dry. If you want to set it for six hours to remind yourself to check it, or you want to set it for 18 - it doesn't matter. Veg can take anywhere from 4 hours (depending on how you prepped it) to 12-18 hours.
You are such a great teacher. I appreciate you for teaching and sharing so much knowledge. Thank you!
Happy to help!
Do you know whether dehydrated carrots can be powdered and then used to make flour for pasta? As in spinach pasta. Seems it would be a great way to do this pasta. Never mind!!! You answered my question already. Yay!!
Yes you can! Doesn't replace the flour, but can be used to color and enhance.
Thanks!
Thanks, Madeline..I appreciate that - but you really don't have to ♥ I'm glad you found the info helpful!
I like to wash, peel, and save the peels in the freezer for making stock. The tops go in the compost.
The intro!!! 🤣🙏🏾❤️
I enjoyed your video I haven’t watched many this is my first of yours I just wanted you to know that I enjoyed it and I appreciate you taking the time to show us these things I am very excited because I felt like the shredded carrots was such a great idea I just have a question do you have to rehydrate the shredded carrots before you use them in baking and other recipes thank you I am blind and sometimes make mistakes thank you
For baking, yes. For soups and casseroles, no need.
How do you NOT pop a few bits in your mouth as you cut/sort? I LOVE carrots!

Hi, thanks the informative video. New to dehydrating vegetables. Do you have to rehydrate vegetables before cooking and for how how long? Can it be used without rehydrating?

That is a nifty mandolin.
Ty
Am wanting to use up my carrots and make them shredded for storage. Do I blanch before shredding?
I bought a 10lb bag of carrots, cut them into medallions, blanched, then dehydrated them. I wasn't too happy with how they turned into nuggets that I couldn't break. I wonder if they are dry in the centers. I do really like the shredded approach though. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
They are - you can cut one in half to check, but if they have shriveled up that way and are hard and plink when you drop them, they are done. Condition to check yourself if you are concerned.
@@ThePurposefulPantry Thank you, I'm still conditioning them and so far so good. I'm fairly new to dehydrating. I'll crack one open in a few days. I'm just doing up another 10bls of carrots right now, usually I do more freeing, and going to do the shreds, I also think they'll be handier for soups.
Thank you...
You're welcome!
I looked but didn't find. Do you have a video on DH broccoli? I was just given a huge bag and would love to dehydrate all of it...
No, but I do have a blog post (I haven't recorded all of my posts, yet. www.thepurposefulpantry.com/how-to-dehydrate-broccoli/
I noticed that you have the Sahara dehydrator. How do you like it? I have the Corsori and would like to invest in another one. Because of the expense just wondering if it is worth the money. Love your dehydrating videos. Thank you.
It's a great machine. I use it interchangeably amongst all the machines that I have. The biggest draw for it is the air-only feature and being able to fold it up and put it away - which no other dehydrator can do.
Thank you. My husband told me to go ahead and get it, but I’m still thinking about it and looking for some more info. All the reviews that I’ve read seem really good. I’ll probably get it but it is a little pricey.
I never knew there was a machine to chop carrots!!!!!!!!!
Some vacuum sealers can be used on large mouth jars. Would this be ok for long term storage?
Yes - most can do large and regular mouth with the proper adapters.
Hi Darcy , do i have to condition the carrots before i make power?? And then do i have to place it in a warm oven before storing? Thanks Mary T.
It is suggested - specially if you are new to dehydrating. But no, you don't HAVE to. And yes, condition the powder after for best storage.
I want that Mandoline!! Where did you get it??
Amazon: amzn.to/4bFbtgN (This is an amazon affiliate link)
Question: storing in a jar air sucked out and an O2 absorber stores in a dark location help with storage longevity.
It's an insurance policy - as I said, you may get longer, but optimal storage (meaning peak) is about 18 mos.
Thank you. Question ... How long are the oxygen & moisture absorbers good for when used. I reside in FLA. I have central air but as you know, Fla is quite humid. Thank you.
Until they aren't. There's no 'time frame" If an O2 absorber is exposed to oxygen, it's used up. If a moisture absorber absorbs all it is going to, it's time to recharge it (the color changing variety helps with this a lot). You'll have to look at particular manufacturers' packaging to see what they give as 'shelf-life'.
@@ThePurposefulPantry wow, that was quick!
I have never done this before. My first dehydrator will be here this coming week. So, why I don't understand, is when you are using the carrots off and on in the jar, how often do you change out the moisture absorbers and how do you know it needs changed?
Do you have a link for those liners you are using on your trays? If not what are they called?
There is always a link in the description to my Amazon store where I list all the tools I use: www.amazon.com/shop/thepurposefulpantry
I don't see your meals in a jar connection above??? Would love to see it - have lots of carrots and more ideas is always a good idea.
www.thepurposefulpantry.com/best-meals-in-a-jar-recipes/
Where did you find that nifty chopper to keep hands safe from mandalin that looks easier than mandolin
I don't like it as much as a mandoline for cleaning (it's a pain to clean), and some things don't work well it. The link is always in the description box. Amazon: amzn.to/3EZ0LCN
Unrelated but have you tried oranges? I did and they are so good for snacking.
Yep. ruclips.net/video/PhOeJZeWEZQ/видео.html
I use my mixer to shed carrots and I don’t blanch before dehydrating
Do you have to rehydrate when in soups, stews, or sauces? Or do they rehydrate nicely in the heated liquid? Do you ever use a powder for, say cream of carrot soup? Thank you for all of your great tips.
They rehydrate best in simmering hot liquid no matter how you do it. Powder is perfect for that kind of soup
@@ThePurposefulPantry Thank you! So kind of you to respond. Hi from London, Ontario, Canada.
I need that chopper! Where did you get it!!!???
It's in the description box - it's a Dash Mandoline. I still prefer a regular one because this one isn't perfect, but I thought I'd show using it. Here's my Amazon affiliate link for it: amzn.to/3xOaie9
What the brand of stand up chopper ate you using. I am looking for one. Reading reviews right now. TY
It's in the description box - Dash
Great idea! Does it taste strongly of carrots, or do you think you could blend it into mac n cheese?
Do you already blend cooked carrots into your mac n cheese? Then powder will taste the same :) Rehydrate it first and get it to the consistency that you want, and use it the same way you'd do cooked carrots. If you want to sprinkle powder in as a booster, then start small and work your way up until you get to the point you want it.
Hello I am a first timer here, Just getting into dehydrating and came across your video. I have a question with regards to rehydrating carrot coins,; when makin soup is it best to rehydrate carrots separately first or can they be added directly into the soup pot without rehydration ?
If it has time to simmer in the soup and rehydrate, it's fine.
