- During his testimony on Monday, Doug Bania testified on the effect that Amber Heard's Op-Ed had on Johnny Depp's reputation using Google analytical data via Google Search and Trends. Bania stated that he analyzed Google search results from before and after Heard's Op-Ed. During his analyzation he noted that the search results greatly differed after Heard's Op-Ed.

Yeah, if anyones questioning this, go look at the comments on original promos for the second Fantastic Beasts movie, before his side of the story came out; people were ready and willing to cancel Johnny Depp SPECIFICALLY because of her allegations. He was dropped from the 3rd one because of it. Only this time, people were outraged that he was dropped! Why? Because his side of the story came out, along with all the evidence against HER. So yes, it DID have an affect, and no, his support isn’t because of “star power”.
The depth they are going to is asinine. AH is crazy & her lawyers are clowns. Johnny is protecting his name....a name he built over many years & entertainment for us. Johnny was never considered in the "cancel culture." She slayed him but only for a moment as Captain Jack Sparrow always prevails 😉😁
yes!!! we saw that in real life, in real time!!! i clearly remember all the trash talk Johnny Depp was getting. his public image was destroyed. for AH and her lawyers to try to deny this is one of the biggest cases of GASLIGHTING i've ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's a tip if you ever find yourself on the witness stand:
It's *better* to avoid giving a direct yes or no answer against the cross-examination lawyer IF you have the opportunity to clarify yourself in clear *detail* (especially if you have your written testimony in front of you).
Answering cross-examination questions this way will reduce the likelihood of the opposing lawyers to pin you against your answers later if something else comes up that may contradict your testimony.
Yep, it's the "have you stopped beating your wife" style of questioning. I've been deposed a couple of times, and I've had that told to me, and my reply was always "Your question may be, but the topic and framing of it isn't."
All questions on the stand are yes or no questions unless you’re asked “can you please explain that further?”. The whole point is to catch them either contradicting a previous statement or just outright lying. This guy was caught doing both.

But the MAIN POINT was that it affected his CHILDREN most importantly. And he also lost work roles as a result. But Depp had already expressed it was mainly for his children, which I respect because that’s what matters most.

I think what the court needs to show is Amber lying under oath, which carries a criminal conviction and maximum prison sentence for the offence of lying under oath in a court of law.

This is extremely frustrating. This makes me more saddened to think this devious woman, can do such damage to an innocent person’s reputation. I hope she goes to jail. Might do her some good to lock her up. She lied under oat as well.
What this tells me is that peoples minds change from day to day because of all the negative information, a knee jerk reaction and can you really trust people if they are so changeable with their feelings. This is a strong indication as to how easy someone can be crucified by the media especially as its a male.

Never believed her, but even if I had, we live in a society where people should always be given due process. Destroying someone on accusations alone is just Puritanical. Our society has not progressed as much as we think when this is where we're still at.
The moment I heard the tape of her admitting to hitting him (and minimizing the “punch” to “hit”), i understood she was an abuser at that point. Someone who justified their violence and looks down on others for trying to escape such a situation is not worth sympathy, especially when they don’t even attempt to make amends or repent.
Honestly, I remember there were a lot of photos and articles after 2016; so she and her team made sure it’s not just pure accusation, but there’s “evidence”. I’m sorry to say there was a short time I believed her (before I saw the video of her talking to the police where she’s constantly smirking and eating)
I was a little suspicious of her claims. I saw too much going on at the time with MeToo and other movements where people were taking advantage of those real and serious issues to selfishly gain attention. I wasn't a fan of his necessarily. He seemed odd. And yes, it was known he drank and did drugs. But nothing close to what she claimed. Of course; if you questioned anything she said at the time; you'd be burned at the stake of social media. But I do give props to those that still boldly posted those suspicious audio recordings of her from the beginning. I noticed every mainstream media source was too afraid to even acknowledge them at the time. Disney dropped him so fast because of the same public pressure.

This is an example of modern technology and modern solutions to old problems - 30 years ago you couldn't have done this - but now? NOW you can actually DEMONSTRATE the actual impact of an act by a person on the reputation of another person, which is one of the hardest things to prove historically and why defamation lawsuits are usually very hard to win. I suggest sharing this far and wide - so that people can understand that.

I think you are overestimating how useful this data would be to most people - most people aren't internationally famous actors that people google. Sure it could help people like Depp and other public figures, but if I was defamed by my ex-wife nobody is going to be searching my name on google.
This helps but it has its own counterpart: this means that there is a control of what we are searching on Google. This is useful, but dangerous for the reasons we know.
This is actually a really bad solution. There are more insightful and data driven techniques that many grad students in statistics or computational social sciences could have performed. Don‘t know why depps team chose this "expert"
I remember when the allegations first came out, people jumped on the band wagon and started hating on Johnny Depp and the film industry reacted to that. Those who stood up for him, or called for a fair trial, were given a social media slapping. It was a perfect display of everything wrong in society. I really do hope the sheep who participated in the destruction of this man’s livelihood feel guilty about their actions and at the very least learn from it.

I hope so too. However, it may take some time. I wrote this line as a segue to say that some of the people were probably overwhelmed by the mass wave of opinions to cancel Johny Depp, which became or overwritten their original opinions to also cancel Johny.
In another words, the human tendecy to follow the crowd is at play here and it is a compelling force that can shut off a lot of people's critical thinking.

Is it just me or does Johnny look like he's trying not to cry by the end.. after being described as "damaged" multiple times and being told over and over what he already knows that people started to hate him after the allegations. It just breaks my heart. I grew up watching him and when the rumors started spreading that he was abusive I just couldn't even believe it. It seemed so out of character for every interview I'd seen, all the bts, and every character he's ever portrayed, I never got the impression he was an violent person. I relate to him so well. I hope this being publicized can mend at least some if not all of the damage she has caused.

I was wondering how he was feeling during all of that talk about people not liking him then paid attention and you could see the effect it was having on him. Kind of broke my heart. And I’m no Depp fan. I like the guy and his movies, but I am just not into actors/actresses/their lives/pop culture. But, this has really gotten to me because I cannot stand bullies, especially ones who lie and throw others they’re supposed to love, under the bus. Amber is sick in the head.

This is the crux of the lawsuit. Johnny’s lawyers need to prove, from multiple sources, that the op-ed specifically affected people’s understanding of his character, as well as cost him money by missed gigs. Everything to this point has been whether or not the allegations made in the op-ed itself were true.
Did you think it left a good impression to persuade the jury that the op-ed damaged his professional reputation?
Defamation by Oxford definition is “the action of damaging the good reputation of someone; slander or libel.” Making a fallacious claim and then it having a negative impact on reputation are the two qualifications. Given that she’s has 6 years to spin this unchecked, it makes sense that it would take this much to support his claims. The last few days of testimony have been exactly the second half, that the lies she perpetuated caused his loss of income.

That just proves what Johny Depp has been saying all along - Amber Heard was the abusive one. An important characteristic of an abuser is obsession (vindictiveness) i.e. 'How dare he/she leave me ? I will make him/her pay. I will destroy him/her'. So even after Johny left her, she kept trying to ruin his life by destroying his reputation.
It’s the fact Amber Heard has kept of destroying Johnny life, his reputation, his career and got boycotted from Hollywood circle. Although if Johnny wins on this defamation trial, this would help to restores Johnny’s credibility and all.

It's complex but it did do financial damage. Where it does damage is the main thing. Not where it doesn't. Popularity doesn't mean financial gain. The public are just one part of it. Some of the nastiest people still work in Hollywood yet studios still employ them. Fame is just one part of it.

Wait a minute. That Q score graph is proof enough that could honestly end the trial in Johnny’s favor. While this has been about digging up Johnny and Amber’s marriage and careers, it’s ultimately been about Johnny’s lawsuit claim that Amber’s actions and 2018 article in particular damaged his reputation. The witness and his results show that this was in fact the case since his likability dropped and became negative based on all the information pulled from the internet. On top of that, his likability was overall positive before Amber Heard said those things. This was icing on the cake.
Alas, Amber Heard will testify soon and this may become an afterthought to whatever bold claims she makes when she starts talking

The fact that the jury, and the public, saw a physical illustration, makes this much easier for that part of the brain that records such imagery, that this may not get lost in the shuffle even after AH's testimony and antics.
I expect she will use every cheap trick in the book to deflect from the matter at hand, i.e. evidence of defamation of character.

My understanding is that in a defamation case, the burden is on Johnny to prove that what Amber has said about him is not true. That’s why they’ve spent as much time digging up witnesses about the relationship.
That said, the part that I can’t fathom is why is Amber’s legal strategy is so focused on the idea of establishing that Johnny’s career was hurt by other factors. I think they’d have a much better case if they took a “nothing they’ve shown proves it didn’t” approach.
That Q score graph had lots of ups and downs way before the articles though.. Just look closely, the public’s opinion of him had been wavering for quite a while.

It's absolutely brilliant for this type of analysis to have been done, and for Johnny's team to have called this witness. I don't think I even knew this type of analysis was possible, but it's direct proof that the effect the article had on Johnny's career is a very real thing, not simply something he perceived, or even any perception by any film producers or companies. Those are actual, real, raw numbers being shown at the contemporary time they had their exact effect. Bravo to Johnny's team!

Well, this analysis is self explanatory. It clearly shows that JD's reputation was definitely impacted in a negative way and he was right to come out there and disclose all these dirty facts, that surely pained him, only to prove to the world that being labelled as 'wife beater' was wrong.
I think we have to be honest here, this was an extremely bad testimony by someone not competent.

@@CharLie_69 I didn't see that. There is also the substantial truth doctrine. There are multiple elements to a defamation claim as well as defenses.
Not sure why people are saying that he is a bad witness. His findings support what Johnny is bringing the case to court for. The negativity of the Op-Ed and subsequent publicity have quantifiably affected his public reputation. The studios saw him as a liability and he couldn't get work as a result. I think this witness strengthens his case.

When I heard about it a couple years ago, I lost a ton of respect for him, and as a huge fan of his career I was devastated. After this, hearing all thats happened and following this case, I cannot BELIEVE amber heard. She should be ashamed of herself.

Yeah, she came out in May of '16, the week of the last alleged physical fight, the week his mom died, and the week she went to the courthouse to obtain an Ex Parte restraining order with a "visible bruise" and she had called paparazzi for it all. How does that not affect his career based on her allegations alone? Also, she never had "bruising" or redness til that day a week after she saw him and was filing.
I think the 'bruises' were botox and filler injection sites, that would explain how they were always completely gone by the very next day. Watched an interview with a tenant of the penthouses building(who says James Franco never lived there,btw) and she said the exact same thing. There's a photo Amber made and sent out and near her eye it looks like a mosquito bite. It's not bruised, just a puffy little spot. The tenant said she gets botox herself and has those little spots for a few hours afterwards.
@@bethnorrod5942 On my close friend, the botox bruises show up the next day. By the day after that, they have faded to a light "shadow".
AH used that type of bruising in an attempt to further her cause on 2 different occasions. Its surprising no one ever asked why she keeps getting "hit" in the exact same place every time.

It's so important that we take into account how our actions affect others. You can't just lie heartlessly and ruin someone's life and reputation without facing the consequences. I personally before researching this case thought johnny was an abuser due to the media coverage after the first trial (I did not do my own research or watch the divorce trial. So a completely biased view) It goes to show how far her word got. This poor man has suffered enough. I hope she has to live with issues stemming from her scrupulous lies from here on out. He's saying that he did not perform the research with the intent of finding damage but damage is what he discovered. It should infer that he is impartial and has no bias. It in no way reduces the impact of his discovery.
