  • In submission grappling you have two main choices for open guard: hooks inside (e.g. the butterfly guard) or legs outside (e.g. the de la Riva guard). Which should you employ?
The right style of guard depends on the exact situation. In this video Rob Biernacki takes you through the transitions from inside hooks to legs outside and back, as well as breaking down the tactical and strategic reasons you might prefer one position over the other.
Check out Rob's No Gi de la Riva Formula at www.,grapplearts.com/DLR for more on the leg outside type of guard, and Rob's Modern Leglock Formula at www,grapplearts.com/leglocks for more a deep dive into the hooks inside style of guard.

I weigh roughly 145 pounds and I'm the smallest man in my class. I was told DLR doesn't work well in no gi, however I watch vids that state it does. I apply DLR and DLR-X in no gi to little avail. I wish I knew what I was doing wrong. I think my opponents have a firm base.

How has ibjjf neutered butterfly guard?

He said it neutered the leg lock game, not the butterfly guard.

At 4:34, Rob says butterfly, and Stefan say leg lock.

I think what he is saying is the butterfly guard or instep guard is most likely going to allow you to attack leg locks because you are lifting a leg and "floating it" but you cant do as many leg attacks in IBJJF so it hampers your options and makes the butterfly less effective. You can use butterfly but the follow-up options are limited due to the rules neutering leglocks.

old comment, but good position for up kicks and wrestling up, as a brief pit stop before inverting for a leg lock, or for tripod sweeps. check out the last 10 seconds of round 1 of mousasi vs sokoudjou

Jacobo Apito it’s a risky position obviously but I think it can work too. You can also hyperextend the near knee by pushing with your knee to keep distance

I do lots of stand up where everyone sits on/pull guard. mAh back can't take it
