Engage is definitely a game that rewards investment. You give a unit a good weapon, give them an Emblem ring, they turn out good. Neglect a unit, don't upgrade their weapons, they turn out mediocre. Any unit can be made useful with enough focus. Heck, people use Clanne and Framme as their MVPs and that's totally fine.
With Emblems, particularly strong ones like Lyn, who you give them to says a lot about what you focus on. If you give Lyn to Ivy you're maximizing her speed buffs but neglecting her ultimate outside of effective damage and selective aggro. Give Lyn to a dedicated archer with forged bows and her ult is basically guaranteed kill, but you might be neglecting a unit who could utilize her speed more.
The ways Emblems and a few Bond rings can polarize units makes who you put them on incredibly important. Without Sigurd, Louis is a bulky wall that maybe kills one enemy. With Sigurd he can charge behind enemy lines sniping key targets and not worrying about death. Sigurd on a more fragile unit limits your ability to run around in the danger zone, but greatly improves their ability to hit and run.
This game has so many tools and no unit is beyond redemption, so tier lists will end up being VERY interesting to create for it.
The Somniel is wayyy better than the Monastery, but yeah I 100% sympathize about being haunted by thoughts of "this could just be a menu." Tellius takes the W as always.
The idea of tier lists being tricky because of units swinging so hard thanks to investment is an interesting point, because tier lists for past games have always taken investment into account as well; a unit like RD Jill or PoR Marcia is top-tier, yeah, but only when you dump a bunch of stat boosters and/or bexp into them. The point is that they make the best use of those resources, but Engage is awkward because the big investment of Emblem Rings isn't permanent. You can turn Ivy into super Camilla with the Lyn ring one map, then next map use it to make an intercontinental ballistic missile launch pad of Etie, and then after that turn Panette into a 50x2 (83% crit) monster, while always having the option of popping the ring back on Ivy.
Yeah just the combination of no level cap, reclass to anything, and diverse + powerful emblem rings makes it very easy to slap a bunch of power onto whoever you want. And even with that there are several correct answers when building a good unit. Ivy/Lyn is good if you want a doubling machine with high magic, but Ivy/Sigurd could also be good for hit and runs with a Thoron forge, etc.
Pretty sad to see echoes move down but it’s okay because thracia being S tier is the only thing that really matters in the end
Yeah, the chance of boss cannot be broken is the same as RD removing WT on hard mode
This change doesn't make the game harder, just give more headache to weak units like Edward.
Overral, I'm glad that Engage Maddening is one of the best highest difficult mode in FE. I don't see as boring or annoying.
