That kind of shady and unethical practice happens more times than i can remember in my 44 years of being an HVAC technician. Sad but an unfortunate reality.
How would the builder know? The builder depends on the hvac guys to be on the up and up. Plus how did it pas inspection? Home inspections are worth the money.

It could have been the HVAC company not the builder which he should know what they are doing but friends don't check behind friends sometimes anyway the homeowner should not have to pay for it and get a new unit I run into situations where the customer gets ripped off and it angers me the amount of money it costs to do anything they should get honest service
Could have been a replacement. Homeowner could have requested it. You don't know man. I wouldn't jump to conclusions. Home owners walk through homes when they are completed if you are building

The builder swapped out the new unit destined for that house with the old one at his house. This would probably be in GEORGIA!

You never know, 2018 they may have had a new unit fail on them and put in an older used but proven unit. Mine from 2003 is a beast...

I know a guy that buys used equipment for rehab flip houses. Told him putting used shit is not only unethical but in some states illegal
