It has been my experience that this scenario never happens. Ever. Just to be clear for any new nurse watching this...this will likely never be the response you get. Most nurses who mistreat others will either double down, be dismissive, or increase their incivility-many times looking to the support of other staff for bullying. Many times the rest of the staff will support the bully as to not become a target of their aggression.
While the ending of the scenario is not common, the things the 'new grad' does to address the incivility is a great example. And it is part of the process of stopping poor behaviors. In addition, while the 'bully' may not react well during the confrontation the behaviors that the person is trying to change may still improve. That is what happened for me as a new grad when I confronted three bullies.
This made me want to cry. I could never start to speak to my senior nurses like that. I could never be that brave. Even thinking about it makes me cry.
when some one acts like that: 1. let them finish 2. allow a pause of around 3 seconds, maintain eye contact, without changing facial expressions (this makes them have a little "oh shit"/ self esteem moment similar to taking off your shirt in front of someone) 3. summarize their points and ask them to verify what they said. example: "just to make sure that I understood you correctly, you stated that x,y,z needs to be done and it is still not finished and its because im not working hard enough .... did I get that correctly" usually at this point they change their tone, reason being you are stating what they said, and in a way asking them to confirm their bitchiness. usually they will say something at the end like: sorry for being so insensitive, or excuse my tone. if not: 4. let them know that they are being a total bitch while giving them the benefit of the doubt: "I just wanted to verify and confirm what you were trying to communicate Karen. It's not that I'm slow or trying to be a bother, it's just that I want to make sure to give you the benefit of the doubt before I tell you my issues with your statements. It is hard to do x y z when it seems like A B C could be done/not done would make the job much easier and faster. I acknowledge that ABC is not the reason why XYZ isn't finished, because saying so would be as incorrect/(if you're feeling spicy say foolish) as me not working hard enough. I just feel like stating your criticism that XYZ is not finished while ABC is clearly there is sort of like a bitching at a patient for throwing up medication instead of asking the doctor for an antiemetic or IV versions of the drug: Its fucking stupid. Did the bitching help? nope. Would working with the patient help? Yes. If karen activates her full karen potential: 5. Karen if you don't shut up you will be pulled to the ED and have a change in your LOC
Thank you for this video. Being a nurse is so hard, we have to be able to remember everything. Make a notes, listen carefully . More important we need to sleep well so we have a good memory to recall everything that the doctor, the head nurse, and other nurses .we need to work as a team and to support each other , to respect and value our team members , when talking to each other we should speak kindly ,not to hurt others’s feeling emotionally or verbally. Kindness means everything. I hope what in the scenario does not happen in the real world, but it could be. If this happened, the nursing world like in the scenario would be a nightmare and so stressful. I pray that this scenario situation will not be happening. We never know, only God does. But we do need to well prepared if we want to work as a nurse, Therefore all nurses or PCTs (Patient care Technician)or CNAs,(certified Nurse Assistance) all have to work hard and learn to be patient beside to master and learn all the nursing skills. Because nursing is super hard. Have to be able to do multi tasking, need to fulfil so many patients’s help / needs , as you can see working as a nurse or PCT/CNA is not easy. A nurse must be able to recall/ to remember well what the doctor say, the PT/ CNA must be able to a report what the nurse say.s or tells her/ him to do also have all the skills to help the patients who need help with . Sure, you do have an excuse for being uncivil, not helping, and the famous story, my mom is sick dead! Please heard it all!!! This definitely is not a good example of civility! Nurses must be able to demonstrate responsibility and accountability , critical reasoning bases on the nursing process and evidence bases science to care for others, work with others and make rational decisions, bases on compassion and ethics, every time every second! No, nursing is not easy, it is hard, dangerous, highly emotional, highly scientific, highly compationate!! This does not happen in the real world...people do not react _that_ well to such a thing. At least, not in my experience, even when assertive.
