Toyota is slowlyyyy getting into full EV because they were against it to start with. As much as I like Toyota, this is a swing and a miss for me. Is lacking. So let’s see how the second version is improved, but knowing Toyota it’ll take 4-5 years to implement all the features the others already have.
Kirk, I didn't comment on the day the you could upload the video, but after watching Doug DeMuro's review of a ("topped to the nines") Subaru Solterra* a few days later I have to say THIS IS THE MOST EGREGIOUS USE OF "BADGE ENGINEERING". EVER. That car Doug reviewed is 99+% this bZ4x Limited AWD, same defects, same specs, even same ground clearance (not even on AWD models vs. FWD on Toyotas vs. AWD on the Subaru). I thought GM was "King of Badge Engineering", but Toyota and Subaru TOOK THE CAKE ON THIS ONE. Even the BRZ is more different to the GR86 than the Solterra to the bZ4x. Since Doug lives near San Diego (close to where Toyota had you and other reviewers test the bZ4x) I suspect this Solterra was reviewed on the same week you were in the vicinity. 😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞
It is simply a co-developed and engineered car between the two marques. As Toyota is doing the manufacturing at least for the time being more design and interior elements skew to its design language but it absolutely is not a rebadged Toyota or Subaru developed by just one of the companies.
I don't think EV can ever be affordable , unfortunately , may be 10 years later or never... Due to the limitation of current technology and supplies of Raw Materials
The new Nissan Ariya, a Tesla, Ionic 5 and Kia EV6 could make it difficult for the bZ4 because they have more power under the car and they charge a lot faster. I think that Toyota needs a few years more to bring a competitive EV to the market.

This Toyota could be a beauty, if not those stupid black parts especially around back wheels and backlights. With proper Wrap or repaint, good wheels with proper fitment this little car can be a stunner.
waiting for the lexus ev; *hard hard hard pass* on this idea people are talking about this ev as a capable driving machine. and i get that as Toyota has that "QDR (quality, durability, reliability)." but, -- there is no reason to buy this ev when one can buy another ev, phev, hybrid or straight gas vehicle -- it seems compliance-car like (its interior is so bland) -- it is utilitarian yet comes with a special price -- $50k! so, -- all 7000 units will sell in the US, easily -- the problem is that they are trying to build a portfolio of electric cars to support every niche; but that is not the game now. it is now oriented around (a) getting something "impressive" with novel featuring, or, (b) driving down the costs (and not up the costs, as that is reserved for cars that offer something novel or different), or, (c) it is building the base for an autonomy, subscription ecosystem -- what would have been a game changer: if years ago, Toyota had taken all their vehicles and adapted as "plug-in hybrids, for every model." that would have driven interest toward the power of complementarity, and it would have changed the focus for the consumers
You made a very good point. This car's biggest competitor is actually not a Tesla or VW ID.4. It's the RAV4 Prime because they will be sold literally in the same showroom. A salesperson would have to try very very hard to convince the customer to go for the more expensive, less powerful option with range anxiety.
I think the less mileage the car gets it should be cheaper even with AWD. Also Toyota should learn a lesson with Tesla with over air programming. I’m getting a 2022 Venza this month that has safety 2.0 and now this BZ has 3.0….something wrong there. Even though this model has limited over air. I guess Florida won’t see any BZ4X anytime soon. Florida took a long time just to get a RAV4 Prime. Connecticut probably will get a few. Needs better battery charging.
Why is Toyota still continuing with FWD for their BEVs? Even Honda, hyundai have gone RWD/AWD for their BEVs and even RWD hating VW has gone RWD/AWD for their BEVs.
Because unless you are in the dirt or show at 40mph you really don't need AWD. FWD is better than RWD as the front wheels pull the car around corners while a RWD tends to push the car outwards of it's turn and into oncoming traffic and is safer in the wet.
@@linusa2996 agree that FWD is easier to handle for most drivers, but with modern nanny electronics and traction control, all remain the same. Also for BEVs, FWD loses out on the 'engine load on the driving wheels' advantage when it comes to traction. This is all similar to how Toyota avoided going FWD till the last moment in the early 80s and even then tried to make their first FWD vehicle as RWD feeling as possible ( handling, longitudinal engine config et al ).
@@kl01af6940 RWD is best for straight line acceleration. If you have to turn, you need to lift off the power. In a FWD, you can stay on the power and pull the nose around the corner. It's how a mini with 70hp could catch up to a 250 hp RWD car on a race track.
Sorry but the range is disappointing. You have to wonder what Toyota was thinking knowing people have range anxiety. There's room in the chassis for a larger battery. Also the placement of the speedometer where it's hidden by the steering wheel is ridiculous.

Toyota has a rep for building cars that work 15-20-30 years after they were built. How's that 20 year old Lucid or that 20 year old Tesla, is Tesla even supporting the car with new batteries? Cause I know that I can take my 1980 Corolla down to the local dealer and have them get genuine Toyota parts for it or I can go down to the local shop and still get after market parts. Good one Kirk. This will be a success in the short term. Not sure whether this will be able to compete with Tesla Y though, with the current range. ID4 is going to take a serious hit, just based on the competitiveness which Toyota offers with their global network. Somehow I expected something better from Toyota
What is the difference between this Toyota and the "different"brother of Subaru ⁉️
Beyond trim pieces? Nothing
Tested on ice and snow its better than Rav4 and compared with other bev's.
Rz is going to be fantastic .better than its rivals .korean trolls fan boys and tesla fan boys will start trolling .oh forget naveenthemachine and lets go brandon
What were they thinking with the cloth on the dash? Looks so tacky and cheap
Rather get a GR Corolla first than a BZ4X
I like it. In 2022, honestly, stuffing a bunch of twinkies in the glove compartment isn’t healthy anyways so no big deal there’s no glove box
I like the design but with gas not electric. could be hybrid but not fully electric.
2 min into the video, saw the price. I hope the word “affordable” is not used.
Good review! Still costly.
Yep Thanks!
Toyota will sell all they can produce no problem. The EV market is volume limited big time, made worse with supply chain disruptions
Alen.bz4x has a better interior exterior and more than its rivals lol.its cheaper as well .bz4x is better than its rivals lol .only the ayria is better lol
@@ekgcanadianenthusiast9961 lol
@@alengreen589 ayria is the best overall in my opinion.then bz4x is the next best one.every ev is not needed to be a speed demon lol .bz4x is a rav4 but in ev form so hate its gets is similar
@@ekgcanadianenthusiast9961 I understand your opinion.
Nice car
This car looks ike a device.
Can't decide if I like it or hate it.
This is worth the money!! Better than Tesla. 👍👍👍😎😎
I really hope Toyota can build factories in Japan to ramp up their EV/battery production. Since global supply lines are so disrupted.
The car is nice. Mass production would be even nicer.
It is a race against the clock. Or bankruptcy.
This Toyota could be a beauty, if not those stupid black parts especially around back wheels and backlights. With proper Wrap or repaint, good wheels with proper fitment this little car can be a stunner.
Toyota is thinking people will still have two cars in their garage. One of these and one of their hybrids for long trips.
waiting for the lexus ev; *hard hard hard pass* on this idea
people are talking about this ev as a capable driving machine. and i get that as Toyota has that "QDR (quality, durability, reliability)."
but,
-- there is no reason to buy this ev when one can buy another ev, phev, hybrid or straight gas vehicle
-- it seems compliance-car like (its interior is so bland)
-- it is utilitarian yet comes with a special price -- $50k!
so,
-- all 7000 units will sell in the US, easily
-- the problem is that they are trying to build a portfolio of electric cars to support every niche; but that is not the game now. it is now oriented around (a) getting something "impressive" with novel featuring, or, (b) driving down the costs (and not up the costs, as that is reserved for cars that offer something novel or different), or, (c) it is building the base for an autonomy, subscription ecosystem
-- what would have been a game changer: if years ago, Toyota had taken all their vehicles and adapted as "plug-in hybrids, for every model." that would have driven interest toward the power of complementarity, and it would have changed the focus for the consumers
You made a very good point. This car's biggest competitor is actually not a Tesla or VW ID.4. It's the RAV4 Prime because they will be sold literally in the same showroom. A salesperson would have to try very very hard to convince the customer to go for the more expensive, less powerful option with range anxiety.
PHEV are a great solution... Manufacturers are scared of making them it seems...must be more money in full ice or full BEV for automakers
Florida will get them 🤞

I would drive this car until the wheels fall off... oh wait, apparently that is not a long time 🤣
bz = means beyond zero according to David Lee
It means beyond zero according to Toyota
@@KirkKreifels i know David said that in his video
What is wrong with the designers making these E cars? almost 50k for something that looks like a corolla inside? No thanks.
👍okay
wow 10 years to make the first EV wow
It is literally a Rav-4 with a battery.
More premium feeling than Rav. Venza tier.
@@KirkKreifels well bz4x do cost more than a rav4 right
Why is Toyota still continuing with FWD for their BEVs?
Its Toyota like that they shall not have faster axell than most people safe can handle.
214 hp is 214 hp..
Feels faster than a 270+ hp car. But is not lol. Should have been 250HP at least.
Slow RAV4 derivative , Toyota gotta try harder
Sorry but the range is disappointing. You have to wonder what Toyota was thinking knowing people have range anxiety. There's room in the chassis for a larger battery. Also the placement of the speedometer where it's hidden by the steering wheel is ridiculous.
Door thud? Really? Is that really a thing people judge cars on? 😒
The charging on this vehicle is an embarrassment. For a 17 year Prius devotee it is painful to see such a conservatively engineered Toyota product.
Better off getting a mach E.
Feels like Toyota put lipstick on an old RAV4Ev
I finally saw the Kia EV6 on the street. That is a way better choice.
toyota should stay with their hybrids/ ice and never make BEVs if they want to sell cars
ioniq 5 and ev6 demolish this. not in polish and reliability though
Demolish how .this as a better interior exterior and everything so be real.range is good as well.specially in europe were its gets 321 miles. Every ev dont need to be fast.
To be honest, head up display is a scam
Now slap an L on the front and add 10k to the price and you have a "luxury" vehicle right?
No
Haywood .no
The Nissan Aryia is better. Seriously.
Could be! I haven't driven it yet
Yes, it looks better than the BZ4X and longer range.
Bz4x is fantastic and cant wait until korean fan boys start trolling oh forget tesla fan boys as well. Better than hyundai kia tesla and ford .only ayria is better .
Hey, Japanese or Japan fanboy!I think you're the stupidest person here. Take a closer look at all the EVs. It's easy to see how bad Ariya and bz4x are. Nevertheless, if you insist on buying it, I would rather recommend Ariya.
why is the motor this big???? i expect lucid like innovation from toyota
Toyota doesn't innovate, they refine.
Oh, and the A/C still works as do all the electricals even after I changed from the original bulbs to LED's headlights and other lights.
@@linusa2996 This is an EV, not a regular gas car.
We don’t know how it’ll be.
@@zerokool-2058 You realize that ICE cars also have electronics and when I say support, it includes that too. That means if I need a controller or a sensor for a 20 year old corolla, and I've had those, I can still get one to replace a damaged or failed part. So can you get a replacement cooling pump without having to take it to a dealer and a paying the 400% mark up?
@@linusa2996 This is still a new car so we can’t say it’ll be supported 20 years from now. Because we don’t know that.
You can speculate based on Toyota history. We don’t know how EV cars will be supported 20 years from now.
Old technology. Small battery. Too long to charge.
wow. most disgusting exterior / interior design ever. IX3 facelift 2022 is much more sophisticated. i hate the future-look visuals. polestar 3 with google will kill all EV Suv's imho. i hope the upcoming lexus suv's can manage to give us a more elegant solution for the next years.
