Ever since i’ve been focusing on hamstrings and iso lateral movements my box squat has had no movements in the knee and i’ve found that no matter what on sumo deadlifts and free squats i have a lot more lateral pressure and lastly i’ve finally started to dig out of my squat plateau!
Im a Bodybuilder. I started hitting hammies before quads years ago. Hamstrings make up 2/3 rd of the leg , Get them big and juicy and your wheels will be so much bigger. Squatting is 10× better after hitting hams. Low and heavy is the way to for me
I admittedly focus like 0% on quads other than deadlifts and squats. But love hammy movements like RDL's and hammy curls. Hopefully my knees won't suck later in life. Great video, Matt! Keep on the grind!
Can't emphasize how important hamstring strength is! At this point in my training, I do more for my hamstrings than I do for my quads (quads are built up from years of cycling/rowing). Glute-ham raises and good mornings have been doing wonder for me!
The latest program I am doing has been beating me up with too much volume and not enough posterior work had my hip glute and IT band I stopped that and built myself my first conjugate block focusing on my weak areas ( hams, glutes back and tris ) I’m onto week two and found the nagging injuries have died down and I don’t have the mental anxiety I had thinking of what my old program had me doing. I’m realizing that conjugate is basically limitless and the sky is the limit. I plan to work a 6 week block doing this and then designing another block. I’ve been training for awhile and been plateaued I turn 40 on Tuesday and I plan to keep getting stronger and bigger Thanks Matt for the effort you put into the channel and these videos
Started hitting some kind of hamstring curl every Wenning warmup for lower and increased the number of GHRs I can do ten fold. Literally, I always got stuck at the bottom and couldn’t completely one not I can do 20. One weakness corrected and its a whole new world.
I Love training hamstrings last year and this year been my main focus they are getting stronger making my deadlifts feel more strong coming up I train them 2 times a week
Hey Matt, I just watched the podcast you did with Dave Tate. I thought it was great and learned alot, and hope you do more podcasts in the near future.
@@WenningStrength I get very crackhead-y if I go longer than 4 days without training, so I guess I’ll be jonesing hard the next few weeks as I try to revive my dead squat rack
I can completely agree. After 2 acl reconstructions I learned it the hard way. If my hamstrings were stronger, when I got in the compromised position where I tore my acl I could have possibly saved the acl and meniscus.
Luckily I've never had an issue with developing my legs, but I can definitely incorporate this mentality and the same concepts into my upper body work 🙏💪. Inspiring stuff! Back extensions, working towards a fully unassisted Nordic has been humbling but it's a necessary evil.
Big hamstrings are essential for picking up an opponent par terre for repeat slams. Or when casévacing someone. Or for a great sprint time. I still have sick quads (IMO). I can high bar ATG squat 3 times bodyweight. But I am way more impressed with my 200kg zercher dead from the ground, than I am my 240kg squat. I am also more impressed with the bulging hamstrings sweep from a side view of my legs. Tons of deadlift variations, goodmornings, back raises and GHRs. I still do lots of squats, step ups and lunges. But it pales in comparison to my posterior chain work.

I find that leg press takes me out of my mentally and is more draining, but squats build my legs better. Not to say that squats aren't also extremely difficult, just little less than leg press.
Due to a long term lower lumbar injury I find squats very painful . Would belt squats be a good alternative? My understanding is that you can focus on the glutes / hamstrings by sitting further back .
Partial range bodyweight back extensions, building from there would be good. Bird dog can help as help. Belt squats do help work around it for sure, but strengthening the lower back and surrounding musculature is probably the best long term. I used to suffer from lower back tightness but addressing it directly with some extra rehab work almost immediately alleviated the issue.
Do you have tips how to decrease leg mass in certain areas (calvs, quads). Yes i'm serious about this. For sprinters/runners the disturbution of mass is very important. Calvs should be as small as posible. Quads also small except rectus femoris. But big glutes and hamstrings are a must!
I swear this has been the most concise explanation of building leg strength on RUclips.
Must be why the views suck 🤣🤣

Try doing them with a band only for high reps and see how they feel
