    This is a very enjoyable way to explore history.

    Also Juan/Giovanni was married to a highborn SPANISH woman named Maria Enriquez de Luna, who was the niece of King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castille. It was Jofre/Goffredo who was married to a Neapolitan. Her name was Sancia of Aragon and she too was related to the families of Ferdinand of Isabella, albeit distantly in this case.

    Pope Alexander looked at Italy with the clarity of a foreigner. He saw that her weakness was her division into many small states, prey to each other, and prey to the larger states of Europe. Sure he wanted a permanent Borgia role in Italy, but I think his goal was the unification of Italy. In this, he was centuries ahead of his time. No wonder Sixtus V and Urban VIII called him one of the greatest popes since St Peter.

      Yes. His foreign birth freed him of the tribal ties which most popes were constrained by. Either they belonged to some historic family with influence throughout the principalities of Italy or they came from little and sought only to exalt their family. The Borgias rose to prominence in Spain under the patronage of Alfonso V and, as a result, did not need wealth or approval when they came to power after Alexander's election. He did what he could to consolidate his power, reassert dominance over the papal states and attempt to install his children in positions of authority through war (Cesare) or marriage (Lucrezia and Gioffre), but alas he died too soon. Cesare's campaign in the Romagna was ended and, for reasons unknown, he did not parley his might into political capital (his greatest mistake, as per Machiavelli) and was quickly destroyed by the alliance of powers that found him threatening, as often happened in Italian politics.

    This guy has read Guicciardini and thinks that was the truth. So much is wrong and twisted. I can't even begin to tell you when and where the story went to be based on rumours instead of facts. Della Rovere, by the way, instructed Guicciardini to tell this very story the way HE told it to the ' historian'. Quoting Machiavelli is nice but he also was misinformed by the rumours spread by Della Rovere ( Pope Julius II). Fact is that after Juan's murder just about every enemy of Borgia was named as possible killer. In 1498, one year after the still unsolved murder, Della Rovere spread the rumour Cesare had killed his brother because he didn't want to be in the clergy anymore, Also Cesare and Juan did NOT have a night on the town! They had dinner at their mother's house Vanozza dei Cattanei. After that Cesare went home, Juan left with a guy wearing a mask (which is was you did when you had syfilus) to visit a brothel. All this became clear after Johannes Burchard's diarium was released about 100 years later.

      no its filled with misinformation. This guy tells the story as written by Guicciardini. He was instructed by a later Pope to write the history in such a way the borgias were a crime family. Julius II hated Rodrigo Borgia.

    everyone needs to remember that most of the primary sources written about this family were written by their enemies. think about the implications. history is written by the winners.

    Actually Mr. Stuart, with all due respect, Lucrezia's baby Rodrigo was the son of her second husband, Alfonso D'Aragona/of Aragon/of Naples, The baby that was rumored to Lucrezia's and either Alexander VI's or Cesare's was Giovanni Borgia A.K.A. "Infans Romanus". ;)

    Two popes and a saint who founded the Jesuit order? The Borgias certainly sound like a very godly family indeed!

    Does anybody know what mutual language they spoke in ? Italian, Latin, Catalan ?

    • @mARTin4ARTsake

      rodrigo spoke mainly Italian as do all popes. However sometimes, to annoy his secretary Burchard, he spoke catalan with his children.

      @mARTin4ARTsake 5 лет назад

      no. Although the italians called the Borgias Marrons ( converted Jews) there is not a single piece of evidence for that. Most likely a rumour spread by Giuliano Della Rovere ( later pope Julius II). He hated Rodrigo for being smarter than he was during the 1492 conclave.
