I bought this book as an eBook and was extremely upset that there were no pictures! It seems terribly negligent to sell a book so dependent on visual imagery without including the images (as in the printed edition). At the very least a clear warning should be included at the point-of-sale. Other than that, this is a fascinating topic, is well written and researched, and highly recommended.

He painted the story of genesis and the last judgement to help educate the illiterate about the old testement...The beautiful thing about it is that Michelangelo painted the beginning of the world above you and the end of the world in front of you and YOU ARE THE PRESENT..THE HERE AND NOW MOMENT...A living part of his work of art.....Michelangelo is asking you ..What are you doing with your time ...What are you making of your present existance??? The Apple Tree was actually likely the Tree of Eternal Life, explaining why we dip apple in the honey at the onset of the evening Rosh HaShanah meal, before all the other simanim.
The Aritza"l HaQodesh even describes eternal life in The Garden of Eden as a Field of sacred apples.
Scholars have determined that the tree was not an apple tree but a fig tree.
The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil was possibly a fig tree because they covered themselves immediately with fig leaves upon eating the forbidden fruit of that tree. There are others who say that the forbidden tree was an Etrog tree because unlike other fruit trees the etrog too much represented perfection where the bark tastes like the fruit. And in The Garden of Eden Adam and Chava were given a test so that they did not yet have the moral perfection to eat the fruit of a perfect tree.
The Tree of Life is not the Tree of Knowledge.

What you are seeing between the fingers of the angel is the jaw of the angel behind the hand not the angels thumb...If Michelangelo wanted to paint a thumb you would have clearly been able to see a thumb. He could paint all anatomy accurately.

Thank you so much, since 1989 till now all I have is very negative thoughts about the Vatican and most the Christianity, I was born in Syria and all my family on both sides are Aramaic/Syriac, and I questions most of the bible mythology and no one can give me a real answer credible answer.

First, I wanted to say, Thank you for what you have shared. I have referred back to this video a number of times. I've been to the Vatican. I have seen the Sistine Chapel.
I wanted to address something you said. At the 22:00 min mark, you review The Last Judgment, Jesus, and the circle of the righteous. "Those who surround him, near him, forever and ever. Those who have earned the right, the special place in heaven." And then you said, "Because of leading a righteous life." Here is where you have made an error, or assumption. Given your background and experience, I can understand why you would think that, assert that, and stand by that. But, you could not be more wrong.
As I believe the Word of God is the "inspired Word of God," (II Timothy 3:16-17). I also believe that God touches an artist's mind, and hands - their "creativity." In this picture, the inner circle has to do with Salvation in Christ. There is a tremendous work inside of the Holy Bible, New Testament (N.T.), called the Book of Acts, or referred to as the Actions of the Apostles of Jesus Christ.
Sadly, many Christians haven't read it. They seem to pole vault over the entire chapter, land in Romans, and get their doctrine of salvation there. But, that too is an error.
The early Church, the True Church of Jesus Christ, was birthed in Jerusalem, not Rome. And it was Jews that were filled with the Holy Ghost on the Day of Pentecost, not Gentiles. The Christian New Testament Church were Jews from Jerusalem.
The faith of Christianity was first given to the Jew, later the Gentile, (See Acts 10). In fact, there is a great story with visions and dreams in Acts 10; Peter receives a vision of "unclean animals" floating down from heaven. As he wonders what the dream meant, he receives a knock at the door, and is invited to an Italian man's home, Cornelius. And, it is here that the Gentiles receive the Holy Ghost, they are baptized with the Spirit of God, and speak in tongues. They are baptized in the Name of the LORD, Jesus Christ.
As you read through Acts 1 through 4, you will experience over 3000 Jews were saved on the Day of Pentecost, (with the same experience as Cornelius' family.) In Acts 11, Peter has to explain himself to the other Jews; why did he go to the Gentiles, why he would eat with the uncircumcised. (Acts 11:3).
When the 12 Apostles of Jesus Christ set out on their Gospel missions throughout the world, it began in Jerusalem, and only spread through the persecution of the Church; but, it was given to the Jews. Saul of Tarsus, (known as the Apostle Paul comes later in Acts 9.) He wrote the majority of the New Testament. He also was a Jew. See Paul's testimony of faith in Acts 22. Who he was, where he was from, where he was educated, etc.
Paul would be known as the Apostle to the Gentiles, because the synagogues, where Paul would teach the gospels, would not accept the idea of the Resurrection of the dead and that they had killed the Messiah, the Holy Anointed One. "Acts 18: "And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean; from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles."
Note: The first martyr in the Christian Holy Bible was Stephen, and he was a Jew. (Acts 7).
The Christian church was Jewish, through and through. Before the death of Christ, many Jews had missed it, or didn't recognize Jesus when He came to them. (The Gospel of John, chapter 1, verse 11: He came unto His own, and His own received me not.(11), But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (12), Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.(13).
After the day of Pentecost, many believed in Jesus, and they were filled with the Holy Ghost and spoke in tongues as God gave them utterance. And it was noised abroad, they all heard throughout Jerusalem. (Acts 2).
The First preached message was by Peter, Acts 2, and Peter was very much a Jew, as are the Apostles of Jesus Christ.
Next, at the 23:39 mark, you said, "The Church has said, and to this day, many in the Church say, If you don't believe in Jesus, there is no salvation." That is an actual scripture in the Book of Acts, New Testament. "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." Acts 4:12. The Apostle Peter said those words and they are inspired by God.
At the 23:44 mark, you emphasized, "Anyone who doesn't believe in Jesus will go to hell." It is true, there is no other way to God, our Father, but through His Son. Jesus said those words in John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
You said at the 23:50 mark, "Michael Angelo, daringly put two Jews in the circle of the Righteous, that was remarkable." Perhaps he did. But, I will say here, there are going to be more than 2 Jews in heaven. There are multitudes of Jewish believers in Jesus Christ.
The New Testament was written by Jews. Salvation in Jesus Christ was first given to the Jews, and there are many! The Catholic church birthed in Rome is not the True Church; it is powerful, and it has many members, but there their doctrines are erroneous. The True Church of Jesus Christ, is Christian. (Acts 11). Christian means those who have been with Christ.
If the Catholic members would read the Holy Bible, I believe they too would be enlightened - or spiritual illuminated. Read the Gospel of John 3; Jesus discusses the need for a New Birth with Nicodemus, (another Jew), paraphrased: You must be born again of water and Spirit to see or enter the kingdom of God. The How To, is found in the Book of Acts, chapter 2:37-43.
Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Michelangelo was a purest when it came to his belief in Jesus, he sent thirty three pears habitually to his friends as a symbol of Christ. It is possible that these symbols exist because he wanted to say that there aren't two religions. That Christianity and Judaism are one. Jesus never wanted to start a knew religion it was suppose to be a continuation of Judaism. People like Pope Julius turned Christ into a political symbol for power and greed. As sinners we can not stand in the presence of God without the ultimate sacrifice of his only son. The prophecy has been fulfilled and nothing at all can change it. Christ warned us that people will try to turn us away from him.

This Rabbi is talking in code. At the beginning of this video he made the distinction that it is offensive to Jews to use the term new testament implying there is an old testament because Jews use the word Torah. Now he's flipping the story of the first person to enter the sea into the person "Jesus" and continues preaching Christian salvation under the banner of The Orthodox Union. "Slickster" who thinks because he can recite in Hebrew and gain popularity that he gets a pass. But he doesn't and there was no symbolic "Jesus" as the first person to go into the sea. The pope originally wanted Michelangelo to paint the twelve apostles...not Mary or Jesus....Whoever told you it was Mary and Jesus...is extremely misinformed you. The pope knew the ceiling was going to be the old testement...He knew what he was paying for. The pope even removed the scaffolding before it was finished when he thought Rome would fall to his enemies and the fresco could be damaged.

There was some good disclosure of messages that could only really be seen by Jewish scholars. However, I suspect, there were also messages that could only really be seen by atheists.
The creation of Adam - to atheists this is clearly the message that Michelangelo was saying "God from the mind of man". That God/s, rather than being an external entity, was created from our own imagination.
The "temptation of the serpent" - great discussion about how the tree was clearly a fig tree, but you either didn't see (or didn't want to mention) the way Eve's neck was contorted. She is twisted to her limit to face the "serpent". However, if her head was allowed to return to where it was before the distraction she would be face to face with a completely different "serpent". Exactly which "serpent" was she being tempted by?
Except that I do not believe that Michelangelo was an atheist. At the very least he was a Deist. More likely he believed in the universal moral obligations that all people have before G-d, and that G-d was heavily involved in the human affairs of Mankind.
Symbolism can be read into everything and anything. Perhaps you could be less insulting about Catholic history, for instance insinuating that Julius loved gold. The Temple was in part lined with gold. Please quote the source of that pope having any std.

The Sistine Chapel depicts the beginning of the world (Genisis) above you and the end of the world in front of you ( the last judgment )...and YOU are the present.... it is a living work of art where you become a part of the work of art as soon as you enter the building it is the beginning of creation, the end of creation, and YOU are the HERE AND NOW... Michelangelo's question to you is what are you going to do with the time given to you? As you can see...Michaelangelo used his time wisely, for the glory and honor of God......Do you ? The Sistine Chapel as a place specifically designed for you to stop and think about your existence and your relationship to God the Creator.. the Sistine Chapel was divinely inspired.
But why is the ceiling missing completely scenes of figures, people of known stature and fame, from the New Testament? Surely if he were commissioned to paint scenes commemmorating the apostles, there would be scenes involving those apostles!
@@dovbarleib3256 Because the apostles are only temporary figures who brought the children of GOD back into his word. They are neither the Aleph or Tav but the middle! In Michaleangeo's time we would be past the apostles and need to look ahead. For as Paul said in Hebrews 8:7 For had you not broken the first covenant, there would of been no need for a second covenant. It's called keeping your eye on the prize!

Hope the book also speaks on the Final Judgement where Christ is depicted as the Lord and Judge of all the ages. Miguel Angelo was not forced to paint the Last Judgement, he was asked, and he accepted without paiment. no jew would have made it for free at all... not even for the very temple in Jerusalem.

The psalms in the Book of Psalms regularly speak of four groups of people that praise G-d: The sons of Aharon, the Tribe of Levi, the House of Israel, and those who revere the L-rd. It's a pretty big leap to say that Michelangelo wanted to abandon Jesus Christ and go back to Moses because he had jewish sympathy.
Before Michelangelo painted his frescs, he scupltured Pieta, so the argument that he refused to paint Jesus and Mary because of his views is just inaccurate, not to mention the Last Judgement. I can understand it is hard for Jewish people to accept, that Sistine Chapel, and its greatest artist were catholic. Even when you look at Michelangelo's earliest works, it was Madonna of the stairs, Michelangelo was a catholic. Period. Sorry.
Rabbi Blech NEVER said Michelangelo wasn't a Catholic. He refused to paint Jesus on the CEILING above because the throne where that immoral pig, Julius II, sat was below. Michelangelo refused to insult Jesus/God. As for the Pieta it is NOT in the Sistine Chapel; it is inside the Vatican's Museums.
