- Barbara Cook sings GLITTER AND BE GAY from "Candide" (1956) by Leonard Bernstein. Includes lyrics and musical illustrations of the high notes, rubato, portamento and coloratura singing and division of the aria between cantabile and cabaletta sections. Recording from the original Broadway cast album (1956)
Bernstein suggested she do opera, but she saud she preferred musicals. Wonderful. Suggest you read her memoir, that's how I came to find her on RUclips. ❤👋🇦🇺
Sorry to take up more space, but people tend to forget that she sang this 8 times a week! At best, most operas are sung with at least a performance or full day between, but Broadway demands 8 shows a week...8 shows in 6 days, which means two days of two performances. Singing "My White Knight" 8 times weekly is one thing; to sing "Glitter and be Gay" 8 times a week blows my mind
You're totally right - 8 times a week is insane. Very, very difficult to pull off once, let alone multiple times per week. She's truly amazing.
She sounds so effortless. It’s absolutely enchanting. 🥺
Still THE Definitive Rendition, Dawn Upshaw not withstanding. Immortal. 💞🙌🎭🎶👑🎶🎭🙌💞
Thank you for giving us the complete recording and a look at what was sung. She later was called "a song's best friend." She was legend.
She was world class! Glad you liked the video.
Marvelous artist! Thank you, Ms. Cook.
