even though she is so closely associated with "glitter and be gay," ms cook didn't sing it after the broadway run of "candide." i recall an interview where she said, in effect, singing it eight times a week for as long as the show ran was enough for a lifetime.
Imagine being far advanced in years, notably overweight and STILL incredibly BEAUTIFUL -- and in many ways prettier than ever! Tha was Brbara cook -- and she SANG wonderfully well throughout her long, amazingly well spent life. And she SANG Cunegonde as well as it could possibly have been sung. Only Diana Damrau, Kristen Chenoweth and to a slighty lesser extent the late great comedienne Madleine Kahn have been able to equal Barbara Cook in evoking the COMIC GENIUS nherent in the role.
And just think, if George Abbott hadn't advised Edie Adams to take Daisy Mae over Cunegonde -- she was offered both -- we would never have gotten Barbara Cook's indelible portrayal. Fate.❤
“You get all those lines above the staff, and you know something’s going on” might be the most musical thing ever spoken. 😂💀
I could listen to her forever. Charm in abundance and oh the stories. “I didn’t read music then, and I don’t now” such honesty!
Met Barbara cook in London in 1989 after a concert, such a delightfully friendly and warm woman.
Me too! Donmar Warehouse... '86. She was so sweet to a fanboy!
"You have great musical courage!" 😂😂😂 I love how self-deprecating she is.
I adore these wonderful interviews with Barbara; she is so charming and candid! I wish I could hug her!!!
ha...I see what you did there..."candid"...ha!
RIP to an angelic voice
what a delight...a great lady...full of spunk! magnificent voice....
I loved her and spent many evenings in the Village with her. A classy lady and a beloved performer.
Saw BC in London in her one woman shows many times , a true star with a unique voice, she will be missed. D x
RIP Barbara. You are forever missed.
I’m proud to say that she and I are fellow Georgians. ❤️❤️❤️
She didn't know how to read music?! That's incredible!
She is living history.
I’m the same
Neither did Frederica von Stade.
Not the first, not the last. Barbra Streisand is one of the many.
Pavarotti could not read music.
This is a tremendous audition story!
this lady is a mood
I got to see her in concert. I am grateful
It's why she was one of the most respected performers on Broadway - not only by audiences, but also by performers.
Great artistry. She will be missed.
I love this video so much...
Legend😍

BC was the shit. She was literally the only person who could sing this.

I would put Ms. Kahn above the other two. Ms. Chenoweth is incredibly talented but her rendition of this was a bit too silly for my taste.

Boy, is this a tremendous loss...
And then she did it 8 shows a week for MONTHS
Oh shit thought this was hill dog
