    It's good to know how it was supposed to sound. Doesn't mean it has to sound this way in every future production. If any. Thing is, there have been so many great renditions recorded since then. This is lovely, but a bit prim, proper--stiff. Of course it is. It's 1937. There's no microphones. An actual teenaged actess is singing this, about a teenaged boy she just met (played by a guy in his 20's). The song was considered so controversial for these reasons, that when a movie was made, with Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney--this song was left out! Most of the songs were. They used "Where or When" but as a sort of collective schmoopy platonic ballad, for all the kids to sing. It does NOT work. The entire movie. A complete and total failure. I think future productions should be informed by all we've learned in the last 90 years or so about the full emotional potential of these songs. From Jazz vocalists like Anita O'Day, but also theatrically trained sopranos like Barbara Cook. We can acknowledge teens have sexual feelings, as well as romantic ones. The innocence and naivete can still be there, but Billie has already seen a whole lot in her life, roaming Depression-Era America, and finally finding somebody she can't just walk away from. There should be a sense of desperation to it. Because he just walked away from her in a huff, believing she's sold out. But she's saying here, "Yeah, he's an idealistic doofus who hasn't a clue how badly he's screwing up- here-but I wouldn't have him any other way." It's an emotional epiphany, and needs to be played as one. Leave the schmoop out--deep deep feeling is needed. Or the song isn't what Larry Hart wrote it to be. No matter how it was orchestrated then.

    Sorry to take up more space, but people tend to forget that she sang this 8 times a week! At best, most operas are sung with at least a performance or full day between, but Broadway demands 8 shows a week...8 shows in 6 days, which means two days of two performances. Singing "My White Knight" 8 times weekly is one thing; to sing "Glitter and be Gay" 8 times a week blows my mind

    The Beethoven theme certainly sounds like it was borrowed and used as the first melody we hear in "Somewhere," but to my astonishment, so does the theme that begins the Adagio movement of Bruckner's Symphony No. 6, as heard from 0:18 to 0:25 in this clip. So I guess Bruckner borrowed from Beethoven, and then Bernstein borrowed from one or both of them. Incredible! ruclips.net/video/gkkJ9HwLJbc/видео.html

    I am surprised that the expression “some day” - rather than the expression “someday” - appears in the lyric. Did Sondheim simply make a mistake?

    • @songbookstation7396
      @songbookstation7396 3 месяца назад

      I think it's a matter of the specificity Sondheim wanted. "Someday" refers to an unspecified future, but "some day" to a more specific day in the future. Oddly, in the film version of the song - changed to a duet between Tony & Maria - the printed lyrics are changed to "someday". I've never seen a Sondheim comment about this, so your guess is as good as mine.

    • @MrAlexsegal
      @MrAlexsegal 3 месяца назад

      If Sondheim deliberately chose the expression “some day” in order to refer to a specific day in the future, then I find his wanting to do this quite surprising. The lyric seems much more beautiful to me if an unspecified time is evoked.

    • @MrAlexsegal

      There’s a RUclips video that appears to present the sheet music for the song - and in this video the expression used is “someday”, not “some day”. I hope that this video is accurate. m.ruclips.net/video/rA4Ox0BE_6Q/видео.html

    Being an Olympian athlete on your instrument isn’t necessarily the same as being a great popular songwriter. As a modern example of Irving Berlin’s transposing piano, nowadays Taylor Swift only ever plays guitar or keyboard using C and G key fingerings, and she uses a guitar capo or the transposing features on modern digital keyboards. (And a computer program can generate sheet music from her keyboard playing - taking over from the musical secretary!) To the extent either of them would need some virtuoso musicianship in the song, a lot of players would line up to be part of what they’re doing. Irving Berlin did pretty well for himself, and nowadays Taylor Swift is a massive success.

    Look, because of social media I _think_ I know Darren and Jeremy but we all know I don't (just don't tell me, let me continue to live in denial) but let's face it, everyone has to agree that they must have shat bricks. They not only got to sing a Sondheim song in front of the man himself, they got to _perform with him._ "Oh, you have five Tonys? That's nice, I got to perform with _Sondheim_ and I have it on video." If that were me, I'll have that on my obit. Others will be like "Olympian Gold Medalist So-and-so died while saving 24 children from drowning..." mine will be "Denial Man, who performed with Stephen Sondheim (yes _that_ Sondheim, look it up, there's a video on it on RUclips), passed away last night after watching Smallville again, his heart giving out when Clark was mind controlled for the sixteenth time."

    The tuning shown @2:00 is incorrect. The correct tuning is (low to high) CGDFCE not CGBFCE. This makes the stacked C/G/F chords analysis incorrect. If you look at videos of Mitchell performing this song, or the still seen in this video (taken from the Rolling Thunder doc), you'll see the first chord shape she fingers looks like an A major chord at the 2nd fret, which in the tuning you show would include a C# (on the D string), which doesn't fit the context.
