Examples include showing lukewarm resistance to Apartheid because western countries needed South African uranium. I think that after the persecution of Jewish people in the 1940s, people in democratic countries said, “we can never again stand by while persecution takes place”. And what arm-twisting could be advocated? Sanctions? That amounts to countries making a democratic decision to say, “if your stand for criminalising LGBTQ, then we won’t engage with you” and that is their right. Should the world have not imposed sanctions on South Africa - to let white South Africans slowly come to the realisation that Apartheid was wrong? The fault with democracy (since Socrates) is that a majority can impose tyranny over reason and compassion. My sympathy and regret goes out to all people who have been and are marginalised and persecuted by such tyranny - including African people who fell victim to slavery, colonialism, Apartheid and post-Apartheid economic colonialism. It includes the Jewish people and other groupings persecuted in WWII. And now it includes LGBTQ people in Africa.
