  • VOCES8 sings 'O Nata Lux' by Thomas Tallis in St. Bartholomäus-Kirche, Pegnitz, Germany.
    TEXT
    O nata lux de lumine,
    Jesu redemptor saeculi,
    Dignare clemens supplicum
    Laudes precesque sumere.
    Qui carne quondam contegi
    Dignatus es pro perditis,
    Nos membra confer effici
    Tui beati corporis.
    TRANSLATION
    O Light born of Light,
    Jesus, redeemer of the world,
    with loving-kindness deign to receive
    suppliant praise and prayer.
Thou who once deigned to be clothed in flesh
for the sake of the lost,
    grant us to be members
    of thy blessed body.

I have sung this piece many times before and heard it performed by some of the best choral groups around. However, this rendition 'aces them all' with its purity of tone, clarity, balance and blend. It's remarkable that not one voice overshadows the others, producing a stunning vocal effort. I expect nothing less from VOCES8, as their renderings of everything they sing is always truly exceptional. I'm in heaven every time I listen to them. Thank you, VOCES8!

The rising tension in that last phrase, dear sweet LORD. The way corporis is stretched out and it builds dissonance on dissonance until it finally resolves was just exquisite.

I also admire music and performers. Really outstanding, specially, how intense and SLOW they celebrate the incredible dissonance (I only know in German: Querstand) at the penultimate stroke. This is so special about the english music of this time - and really great to hear and to enjoy the tension and when it releases...

Let's see much more beautiful english text:
    O light of light
    Now born as man
    Jesu, redeemer of us
We now beseech on bended knee
That you accept our lowly plea.
You who took on our human flesh
Who for our sins died on the cross.
Let us unworthy though we be
Mingle our lives and thoughts with Thee.
