I love the music that begins to play at 0:12, it really marks the climax of the scene. Also love how she runs to hug him at 3:07. All of of their hugs are so sweet, the ones at 4:20 and 4:33-35 are my favorites, they look so cute in those moments... I simply love that scene.
I love the part when she finally tripps out .. 0.05 "look you can see my hand through it.."... the room was just about the last straw to crush her insecurities
in the book.... the fancy dress ball was amazingly painful to witness and you were so SAD for her. .....................................She sure did look beautiful in that dress though.
Beautiful moment-- 8:30 In her Fancy Dress, walks down the stairs in eager anticipation of the surprise she is about to deliver. You can even see it on her face. In the book, at this moment, she had a member of the band announce her presence as "Ms. Caroline DeWinter!" -- also-- she changed into a blue dress and stayed the whole night at the ball.. miserable and unspoken to maxim. It was to be the happiest night, their official engagement party. Quickly turned into misery.
"Listen to it. Listen to the sea." "Yeah. That's pretty neat." "So soothing. Listen." "Ok, well, thanks for showing me arou--" "Listen to it. Stay and listen. You look tired. So soothing." "Can you maybe take a step or two back so that our eyeballs aren't touching?" "I keep Mrs. DeWinter's underwear right over here. I like to touch it." "O...kay..." "Feel it on your skin." "I have to go." "So soft..." "Real good then. Okay. Carry on with your... duties... Thank--" "Spank me." "G'bye."
it was a convention of the period in which the book is set, along with the other thing which you would know if you had watched the whole film or read the book
@hiatusinc I like her as well, her obsession is what makes her such an enjoyable character. She is the character you love to hate like cruella deville.
Shes a shy, unsophisticated girl in surroundings unusual to her. So i guess the idea of firing staff didn't occur to her...especially since she used to be the staff.
Eyre left Rochester because he already had a wife and she had character and principles. Her thinking is, "How long until he gets tired of me as well?" He wants him to truly value her and prove herself in the world. She was very wise, though she almost lost him.
There is a strong suggestion in the book that Danvers was in love with Rebecca, and you can see it here. I think Rebecca was just using Danvers the way she did everyone else, and Danvers was in denial about it.
Hey Sara! Not sure if u'll even see this comment but I hope so :) I hope you and the little eskimo are comfortable there, watching Rebecca? I miss you. You're the sweetest girl alive :)
@AlliyaandRaza It doesn't say in the book that she is plain-looking, but rather that she thinks she is plain. That is quite different. It is more that she is modest and not flashy in her beauty like Rebecca was. She is supposed to be a pretty, young girl - exactly like Joan Fontaine!
There's so much excess in this room. But i like it all the same. Wish i had that dresser for my clothes. This poor woman - living in a house that can't move into the future.
In the book the "I am Mrs De Winter now" assetiveness comes after she is sure Max never loved Rebecca and does love her. I don't think it works so well the way they have done it here - I mean, there's no real reason for her to have suddenly gained confidence
i don't know about that... remember she had to work for the mean lady that hired her as a paid companion in the begining of the story. THAT woman had to pay someone to put up with her -lol! so she had it up to her neck with all these mrs. danvers-freaks in her life. so yea she decided to take control. one doesnt always need a man's love to give one confidence. we as humans can get strength from an overall life experience.
@TheSkylur44true, vivien leigh is striking. but good thing they didnt choose her, i prefer joan fontaine, more innocent, purely beautiful. perfect for the role!
omg...the housekeeper is so obsessed with the first wife, it's too creepy. She's like admiring all her stuff and touching it. ALSO...why is everything monogrammed?? The husband should of gotten rid of it all! geezzz poor girl. Everything's just too weird for her.
I think he's very much learning just like her and doesn't know how to react. His first wife turned out to be a manipulative evil witch that very much scarred him. Maxim is just as inexperienced in being genuinely loved as she is.
@nineczek Mrs deW is supposed to be plain-looking, even homely. Fontaine wasn't, and Leigh certainly not. In the '40's an actress would never wear makeup that made her look homely. We're more naturalistic now.
Such a silly scene. Rebecca was the most stylish, dark, beautiful creature everyone ever saw and here's the mouse compared to her. Please, not even is she was wearing a black wig could she come close to Rebecca.
no, Mrs Danvers, was more than mad, still the best servant of the house , but CRUEL, in a subtile way, the worse way of beyng cruel, a savant cruelty....
Okay, what is the deal her this story has no lesbian relationship that is not unless you assume it for some strange reason? Mrs. Danvers brought Rebecca as a child, and she influenced a lot of people in good and bad ways. I'd get the facts before I stated in false assumations.
Mrs Danvers is obsessed and insane..but terrific acting..she scares you like hell
"I am Mrs De Winter now". Like a boss.
Mrs Danvers is my favourite- true brilliance :)
LISTEN TO THE SEA....SO SOOTHING
CREEEEPYYY 0.0
The book was great. Read it several times, but somebody borrowed and did not return it.
I love the music that begins to play at 0:12, it really marks the climax of the scene. Also love how she runs to hug him at 3:07. All of of their hugs are so sweet, the ones at 4:20 and 4:33-35 are my favorites, they look so cute in those moments... I simply love that scene.
Aww, the maid helping her with her dress is so sweet.
Love the music cue after "I am Mrs. DeWinter now." Says: take that, bitch!
"_I_ am Mrs. De Winter now!" One of the most satisfying lines in movie history.
Susan portrays Mrs Danvers in the musical like no other will do, ever!
haha i love how Beatrice refers to Mrs. De Winter as "the child"
@thighmister
You have me practically on the floor with this!!
Ahhh Mrs. Danvers is so creepy! I LOVE it! :D
am I the only one who actually likes Mrs Danvers? She may be mad, but she does it so ... elegantly.
I love the part when she finally tripps out .. 0.05
"look you can see my hand through it.."... the room was just about the last straw to crush her insecurities
i cant hardly watch her go down in her costume! i feel for her!
wonderful
in the book.... the fancy dress ball was amazingly painful to witness and you were so SAD for her. .....................................She sure did look beautiful in that dress though.
The power of Reby`s knickers...:P

Mrs. Davers looked proud of her afterwards.
Its even better because Danvers doesn't blink!
I think Vivien Leigh actually did a screen test for the part, I saw it here on youtube a while ago.
I love the charakter of Mrs Danvers xD Don`t know why maybe because of the Rebecca Musical but I think Mrs. Danvers is the best charakter in Rebecca
You're right: they did share a room. I should've clarified--I was referring to the fact that they had separate beds in the book.
am i the only one who thinks she have been better off in the suit of armour?
that is so true, and i love how Denvers looks like she's gonna have a nervous breakdown ; )
it was a convention of the period in which the book is set, along with the other thing which you would know if you had watched the whole film or read the book
@hiatusinc I like her as well, her obsession is what makes her such an enjoyable character. She is the character you love to hate like cruella deville.
"I'm Mrs DeWinters now"!
mrs. danver is obessed! holy smokes...
9:34 'Ooh, bitch, I'm gonna get you for that'
Shes a shy, unsophisticated girl in surroundings unusual to her. So i guess the idea of firing staff didn't occur to her...especially since she used to be the staff.
I've been thinking
Well what do you want to do that for... lol how can his treating her like a kid be so darn cute?
thank god she got rid of all her stuff! next should be the maid!
I know! it makes me frustrated that she gets creep out whenever she is with her and she still believe what the servant tells her.
@Deanybob101 I know! I had such an awful feeling as soon as Mrs. Danvers suggested the idea
This would have been better if we saw glimpses of what Rebecca looked like; as a ghost or something, and maybe haunted their home! : )
You're absolutely right. Her suddenly growing a backbone at this point seemed completely inappropriate.
Eyre left Rochester because he already had a wife and she had character and principles. Her thinking is, "How long until he gets tired of me as well?" He wants him to truly value her and prove herself in the world. She was very wise, though she almost lost him.

She looks like Scarlett O'Hara in that dress and hat!
exactly what i thought when i read the book
@hiatusinc She's an excellent foil. She's an asset to the movie.
Did she win a best supporting actress award?
If she didn't, she should have.
YES ! Me too !!!
No, it wasn't just Hollywood. It's that way in the book, too.
That Danvers lady makes this to ghost movie
I don't understand these people; if you don't enjoy then why watch it in the first place then?
Joan Fontaine is an absolutely beautiful woman.
i think that mrs danvers was gay and loved rebecca. anybody else thnk that?
I HAAAAAAAAAAAATE MAXIMEEEE
@AlliyaandRaza It doesn't say in the book that she is plain-looking, but rather that she thinks she is plain. That is quite different. It is more that she is modest and not flashy in her beauty like Rebecca was. She is supposed to be a pretty, young girl - exactly like Joan Fontaine!

This poor woman - living in a house that can't move into the future.
@ChildOfTheFlower You got that right.
I'm laughing so hard at your comment, I have tears
@sulivel if you read the book, she is killed, but not by Mrs Danvers
N A S T Y W O M A N
Mrs. Danvers....who the hell married her!?
In the book the "I am Mrs De Winter now" assetiveness comes after she is sure Max never loved Rebecca and does love her. I don't think it works so well the way they have done it here - I mean, there's no real reason for her to have suddenly gained confidence
I was cringing so hard when she came down the stairs....
this girl needs to hold herself together!
Danvers = PSYCHO
Yeah she sounds slightly evil. I am Mrs de Winter now!! mwha ha ha...
I used to work with the male version of Mrs. Danvers :(
my god. she is so freakin naive! Put yourself together, girl!!!
2:37-2:40 about bloody time
@LeBookworm ooohhh.i see! thanks.
@TheSkylur44 thanks think i'll search for that, i'm starting to like how oliver speak!
Danvers is one strange wackadoodle.
I doubt Rebecca ever felt that way towards Mrs. Danvers. pretty sure that was one-sided.
i don't know about that... remember she had to work for the mean lady that hired her as a paid companion in the begining of the story. THAT woman had to pay someone to put up with her -lol! so she had it up to her neck with all these mrs. danvers-freaks in her life. so yea she decided to take control. one doesnt always need a man's love to give one confidence. we as humans can get strength from an overall life experience.
OLD HOLLYWOOD
Mrs Danvers is a little reminiscent of Prof Severus Snape, no?
didnt the scene where everyone stares have like 100 people in the book??
@9876543217303 She was mostly a stage actress, one of the best in her time.
No, there were only Frank Crawley, Maxim, Beatrice and Giles
That poor girl needs someone to stick up for her. Maxim sure fails in that regard. Maybe she could get a really big dog.
haha i know!
@TheSkylur44true, vivien leigh is striking. but good thing they didnt choose her, i prefer joan fontaine, more innocent, purely beautiful. perfect for the role!
@luname82 back then...wealthy couples slept in separate rooms unless they were going to have sex...
Danvers was all getting up close and personal with Carla,or whatever her name was, when she was crying.
That looks sorta weird...
omg...the housekeeper is so obsessed with the first wife, it's too creepy. She's like admiring all her stuff and touching it. ALSO...why is everything monogrammed?? The husband should of gotten rid of it all! geezzz poor girl. Everything's just too weird for her.
I. WANT. MAX. HAR. HARRR.
He really is a pig, note how he doesn't say, you could never embaress me. He more then Danvers made her feel unworthy.
I think he's very much learning just like her and doesn't know how to react. His first wife turned out to be a manipulative evil witch that very much scarred him. Maxim is just as inexperienced in being genuinely loved as she is.
lol, i was kidding about them meeting in a lesbian bar in 1932. i don't know how they met. never read the book either.
@nineczek Mrs deW is supposed to be plain-looking, even homely. Fontaine wasn't, and Leigh certainly not. In the '40's an actress would never wear makeup that made her look homely. We're more naturalistic now.
I hope she's chasing ms. Danvers in the room to smack her around for tricking her.. Ugh!!
DOES THIS DRESS REMIND ANYONE OF THE ONE JOAN FONTAINES CHARACTER WORE IN SUSPICION
could that crazy lady have killed Rebecca...
-_-
Mrs. de Winter II
Danvers is a Beast!! Grrrrr I hate her!!
this movie has a subliminal lesbian angle. REBBECA most likey bisexual. and MRS. DANVERS was in love with her...
@michaeldea10 Be careful what you wish for.
Something tell me she might do the nailing. Just like the did to the late Mrs. De-Winter.
:)
@DrSoloDolo It's people like you that they make movies like I Hate Valentine's Day for.
Joan Fontaine is hot.

why doesn't Maxium share a bedroom with his wife?
Awww shit not this scene
