Mayo, if you’re yearning for something original, compelling and intellectual I highly recommend watching The Expanse sci-fi series. The books are fantastic too (and unlike GOT, the authors have completed their source material and are producers on the show).
Like you, I’m so tired of lazy sequels and reboots that trash the original source material for a quick buck.

Trinity's strength was that she was able to keep up with Neo and stand beside him as an equal despite having none of his powers. There were also genuine stakes whenever she got into a fight because she couldn't rely on any overpowered abilities to save her, which compensated somewhat for Neo being such a boring overpowered character in the sequels. No matter how invulnerable Neo was, he still had a genuine fear of losing Trinity that humanized him.
Now both of the main Matrix characters are boring and overpowered. There are no stakes in the franchise anymore and no reason for the audience to care about anything that happens on screen.

I liked the meta early parts much moreso than the rest of the movie. I liked that it didn't pretend to be a nostalgic cash-grab and mocked that trend instead with zero subtlety. But I expected that it would go somewhere from then. It would try to tell a story that uses how unoriginal and stale those soft reboots usually are.
But it didn't, instead it veered off into being stale and unoriginal, now some people say that it's brilliant because being bored by it means the movie made its point adequately, as if it was an achievement to suck on purpose.

This movie is Lana saying we, the audience, is stupid for not interpreting The Matrix like she did. Or rather what she claims it was about - I don't believe for a second they had those thoughts while directing the original.

This is maybe the worst read on Resurrections that I've seen yet, because it explicitly makes the point that people trying to read any specific thing into it and put any definitive meaning on it, whether through their own interpretation or trying to retroactively put it through the lens of trans filmmakers, was misguided. The first 45 minutes are a screed on the flexibility of art and intention vs. interpretation. I'm not defending the movie, because it's a mess, but this is the take of someone who didn't actually pay attention to it. Which I can't really blame you for.

I knew it was gonna fail the moment I saw the name. Naming the movie Matrix RESURRECTIONS is like screaming "Hey guys look we made that old movie again haha go watch so we can make money." ID Software did this amazingly with Doom 2016. The game was marketed as a reboot, or a comeback of a franchise, but they just took what made the originals awesome and made it better, its almost a totally independent game. Matrix Resurrections on the other hand relies too heavily on old movies to back it up, like they couldn't make something as good as the original films. Sorry if you didn't understand me I don't really know how to explain this

Good review. I went in blind like yourself and I ended up absolutely despising the movie. I agree that the movie MENTIONED some interesting ideas (a robot civil war, alliance with human-friendly machines, etc.) but these ideas weren't integrated in a way that mattered and the movie doesn't bother to do even the basic dirty work of explaining its own premise. The "it's bad on purpose" refrain is hilarious and reminds me of the discourse around The Last Jedi, where people honestly believed Rian had made the film poorly on purpose as an attack on Disney. Hysterical.

This movie is a confession. They're basically telling you the first movie was handed to them; the work of someone else was subverted. They even identify the source within the first 15 minutes, twice. Look for the most primitive Easter Egg within that time!
If you need convincing -- the unpolished original stolen material is out there on a youtube channel. Look for Milton Killer's Matrix Easter Eggs.
Of course it will go over the heads of almost all who watch the movie, but if you pay attention to the way The Merovigingian is portrayed and to what he says, you can get an inkling of what's going through the writer's mind. Confining the first three movies to the content of a video game is more or less open contempt for them. This is because the original was stolen; the attempt to subvert its ultimate manifestation failed. The writer feels attacked from all sides whenever The Matrix or its memes get lauded over.
The movie's ending is also telling. Retconning of the "negotiation" is again the disownership of the original trilogy. But, alas, this will not suffice.

Because it is not good, a 5th matrix movie may no longer be greenlit which is something wachowski may have wanted. This is what I hate, and it hit me. This is something Ive been saying about so many other movies, that I commend matrix 4 for actually telling me this is how even the creators feel. So, in a way. It was alright.

It was pretty obvious from the film that they did not want to make a 4th film at all and were basically forced by the studio executives. It's really less about "the meta" than it is about their work being appropriated by some terrible on-line hate groups and monetized to the core, i.e., turned into a "franchise". That whole scene with the Merovingian is just the Wachowskis getting annoyed af and explaining how everything's fucking shit nowadays.
And in a way, I kinda agree. No one can make a Matrix movie that "feels" as good as the first one, it's impossible. No matter what they did it would have turned out as yet another dumpster fire of a sequel like all the Star Wars/Star Trek/MCU/DCU garbage movies that people munch on nowadays. It seems like you totally misunderstood the logic / events of the first act. Neo didn't willingly distill his experiences into three games - the three games are part of the lie the machines are feeding him to keep him caged. He thinks he's a normal person who's lived a normal life. The criticism "Neo wouldn't choose to represent his life this way" doesn't make any sense because he DIDN'T choose to represent his life that way, the machines chose to represent it that way to keep him confused and caged.
EDIT: Regarding the swarm program and the suicide jumpers - the analyst says earlier in the movie that the population is seeded with his handlers, so I don't think those people dying cuts into the machines' power supply. All of those people are just bots, they're not real humans.

Whether it's Neo that made the games, or that the machines made the reality where the games exist and neo thinks he made them, it STILL doesn't make sense that the events were broken up into 3 neatly separately games just like we got 3 movies, which is point I'm making. It's only that way to make a meta point about the trilogy. They're still coming from his experience and his perspective. Presented in the form that we saw them as movies, which is ridiculous.

Every character in movies doesn't have to look vulnerable for the fight scenes to be great. Neo was vulnerable enough in the first Matrix and watching him display his God level powers in the sequels was absolutely amazing. If anything, the fight choreography and set pieces of the Matrix sequels was ground breaking.
Take the Terminator as an example. The T-800 to be specific. It doesn't display a shred of vulnerability and yet it's one of the most iconic characters of all time. I think you missed the point of him creating a game trilogy. Putting those experiences, obviously the most important to him, in such a rigorously defined narrative is part of the device used to dismiss his recollections as fantasy. Deluding him into thinking the most important moments in his life were merely plot points in a game series he made is the whole point. He didn't actually create any games. The machines are trying to suppress those memories, but they know they'll still crop up. Giving him a disjointed framework into which these moments fit makes far more sense than giving him an unbroken narrative of events as they actually occurred.

While I liked the first half hour of the movie (for the reasons you hated it), the rest was terrible.
After the Merovingian scene, I paused the movie (saw it on HBO Max) and had to take a break, that was the moment the movie completely lost me.
While I think Lana deliberately made this disaster to implode the franchise so Warner couldnt exploit it anymore, I think the anwser is simplier, she just...got old.
We see this with some of the dialogue (who still uses the term "MILF" in 2022? that character wasnt a young man, that character was written by an old person trying to write a young man), but the Merovingian is just...wow.
I'm not a kid, I'm mid-30s, but after he finished his rant about Facebook, Wikipedia, and videogames, all I could say was "ok boomer".
About the lack of people dying, dont forget that machines literally found a way to resurrect people...not only that, the "daughter" of the program who designed the "resurrection machine" is on the human side, which means that in the eventuality someone dies, they can just go and bring him back.
And the movie takes place 60 years after Revolutions, so it means the machines were able to bring them back after decades of being corpses...what?
And about Neo and Trinity, not only is it dumb, are you expecting me to believe no couple, in 600 years, felt in love so much as them? seriously? not to mention, Keanu and Carrie never had any chemistry, so basing your whole movie on the concept that their love is so unique that it might happen only once every millenia on the chemistry between them, wasnt a very bright idea.
Also, no disrespect to any of them, but seeing people pushing 60 making out is...odd, in any movie.
And this is also noticiable in the flying scene, seeing poor 54 years old Carrie-Ann Moss hanging from wires was just...sad.
And about the One thing, they retconned a lot from the original trilogy, but not this! The Analyst mentions he needs Neo to reboot the Matrix because he is still the Anomaly, but if Trinity is also the One, why not just use her instead? why does she keep punching and kicking a program who cant feel pain? and if you want to make that nonsensical thing happen, have Neo doing it, he is the one who was tortured for decades by this program, why is Trinity so fixed on him, she already blew her steam by beating her husband Chad (btw, "Chad"? seriously???).
You might not want to say it, but this movie was trash.

Matrix 3 did end on a massive compromise between machines and humans, the fourth movie should have been about how humans and machines try to coexist within the matrix. Instead we got some weird deconstruction of the franchise for the sake of deconstruction, it's a shame, but I had a feeling this movie would fail more than succeed.

I also just watched it last week. I avoid spoilers at all, just heard people didn't like it. I get why. The first half is brilliant until Neo escapes the matrix again. The tone is amazing and has a deep narrative about the real-life treadmill the systems we built got us stuck in.
When they reveal the machines had a war amongst themselves and that Zion has a hardline position on machines, I had hoped that they'd introduce a political motiv with Neo(and Trinity) in between the two human cities and either one or two machine factions(with maybe two separate instances (and versions) of the Matrix to power them). Then they could have had that first meeting with the new architect in the workshop and end the movie there and make one or two more.
Instead the machine conflict is 3 sentences long, we get a terribly shot rematch against the creatures from the 2nd film(this one and the train fight were shot terribly, were they perhaps shot with 60 FPS in mind? On the projector this just looked terrible) alongside a 2 minute Merowinger dialogue(a character I loved in the old movie but his appearance was just wasted for a poor attempt at nostalgia) a stupid deathstar-exhaust-style rescue mission and an upgrade to two chosen ones. Don't get me wrong, I actually liked trinity having chosen-one powers in the new version of the matrix. I just had hoped that Neo wouldn't get his full powers back, as it's a new version of the Matrix and all and they introduced the power was shared between the two of them. The fact that they both get powers seems like a stupid attempt at fan-service which destroys a big part of the story in my mind.
So yeah, there was much potential and literally nothing of it was used. I am really disappointed. The WB meta dialogue made it seem like they were forced to make this move which made it even weirder, but it also got my hopes up that the ending wouldn't be rushed after setting an office-treadmill tone for 20-ish minutes. Instead of creating something new and deep as I described above as an example they just made a cheap money grab trying to leech off of nostalgia.

The idea of the powers being shared between the two of them is really good, and would have solved Reloaded's biggest problem that Neo was too powerful and his fights had no stakes. Cutting the powers in half and dividing them up lets them demonstrate Neo's mastery over the matrix while still letting him be vulnerable enough to have interesting fight scenes. You can see what the Oracle tells her either as predetermination or as her being allowed to "pick" who the One is. Given that the Oracle tells Neo he's not it, it feels like Trinity is the deciding factor. Plus Agents are supposed to be so powerful only the One can defeat them, and the only person other than Neo ever to kill an agent was Trinity. That and the way that code works in those movies and the fact that there have been multiple Ones prior to Neo it isn't a stretch to say she's either got some of the code in her or some of it rubbed off when Neo reached inside her (lol) in Reloaded. Because neo didn't experience his life as a set of 3 movies. It's way too unbelievable of a coincidence that he would cut up the events of his life into the exact movie trilogy that we the audience saw. They only made it that way to make comments about the trilogy as a Hollywood product.
It would be like a Lord of the rings character writing about what he experienced and coincidentally writing 3 large individual books about the adventures and giving them the same titles of the books the audience has read.

I don't see the coincidence. The matrix movies don't exist in the fictional world this movie takes place. In that world they have a trilogy of games. We don't really know what those are like, they can't be exactly like the movies because they are games. We see a few clips from the Matrix 1 in Resurrections as being depictions of the video game. (which doesn't make a lot of sense, a 2000's game would never look that good.) So yeah that part is stupid, but I don't assume that the games are 100% exactly like the trilogy. Where would the Gameplay even fit in?
But let's say that they had decided that neo was actually a movie director, and he made the Matrix Trilogy movies exactly like they are. I think that would still not count as a coincidence because it obviously wasn't by chance that things turned out that way. In that case I would see it as some sort of commentary about how the fictional world and the real world are connected somehow and there are forces conspiring to make these movies the same in both worlds.

It was suppose to tell Neo that he is controlled by viagra cookies code that Oracle had written for him, and that he should not trust her, or Morpheus, or anybody for that matter, not even Architect when he eventually gets to him. Because they will either lie (Oracle), intentionally ommit the truth (again Oracle) to manipulate him, or simply will not know the whole truth (Morpheus, Oracle, and Architect, none of them knew what will happen if Neo choose Trinity instead of restarting the Matrix for the 6th time) so he should not make any choice based on a bad info that he gets from them. It is the whole piont of Merovingian. He knows that humans can be controlled by both stories and chemistry, but also by a code, because they are all cyborgs plugged in a computer after all.

@@underthemayo But you forgot to mention that before "Neo (...) caused him to explode" the agents rained lead on him, made him Swiss cheese, only to be surprised that he didn't die and they couldn't beat him.

Furthermore, Agents Smith is quite different from the first movie. Though the very same arrogant bastard. He is not an agent from the system, but an agent of chaos himself. A virus that spreads and take control.
I mean, it's not coincidence Neo "dies" at the end of the trilogy.

@@thedonutkillermandude3668 I don't know man. If a guy magically entered my body and made me explode, I'd think twice about trying to attack him unarmed in a park. It makes Smith look stupid. It's all just to have a big spectacle fight. A script written to get from one action scene to the next.

Unfortunately we will never again get movies like the Matrix, Aliens, and Apocalypse Now. Those movies had a very raw and guriella style to them which is why they are the greats. Movies now days have less substance and feel more like cash grabs than a cohesive masterpiece. The actor and film makers put blood, sweat and tears into making those movies from script to the final cut.

Hah I thought the same thing about Neo's go-to move for the rest of the movie. Gone are the days where he actually fights things or even dodges attacks. Let's just block everything......I dubbed it, "Deus Ex Blockina".
Edit: Plz...fuck...no....I live in fear of the day they fuck with Back to the Future.

I think they missed the whole point-when Warner made the call to Keanu. Trinity DIED in the third movie. I believe Neo also died , but I could go with him surviving, but he really should be dead too.
This new crew shouldn’t have any knowledge of Neo’s Matrix-that one is over and they built a new one. Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving are still with us- did WB just not want to pony up?
They clearly thought that the “romance” between Trinity and Neo was going to make us all gushy. I love them as actors- they ZERO heat as a ‘couple.’

Oh damn this is bad. Like I was expecting it to be bad, but I wasn't expecting the movie to actually try to be bad. They shouldn't have brought back Trinity and Neo, it set expectations way too high for what this could deliver. I personally loved the Animatrix shorts and would've loved some more exploration in that style, but set after the trilogy.

It's when you realize the truth. What truth?
That the movie is not the story.
Lana Wachowski was given a choice. WB: Make another Matrix movie or we will without you.
Now the movie went from a child to a monster by its own creator.

There was an underlying laziness to the whole thing that, when contrasted with the first film in particular, is jarring. A tiny example of this is the whole "video-game development" angle: why were the in-game cut-scenes of the Matrix games performed in live-action using real film footage and actors instead of rendered graphics? Someone who'd approached this project with genuine passion and a desire to create authenticity would not let something like this slip by.
Overall, although I somewhat enjoyed the meta aspect of the early part of the film, the biggest "crime" this film commits is how it strips the Matrix mythos of its mythic grandeur. This film just feels and looks like a bare-bones TV show. So strange.
