- No matter what you want to learn in watercolor, by far one of the best teachers is to simple get out your paints and experiment. I can honestly say I've learned more that way that any other. In this video I'm going to explore some texture and mark making ideas.

Hi just want to say how much I love watching your process! Beautiful. Those of us who use art as emotional release benefit enormously. Trust your creativity, trust the process, let go of perfectionism, bloom where you are planted, work the beauty of what you have.❤❤❤
Got some more ideas and tips just watching. Love spontaneous painting.
So glad to be back for a bit, love watching.
Thank you Steve for the gifts you bring to us all - your spontaneous art sustains both heart and soul. Stay well John
@johncronin: Hi, my name ist Petra. About 30 years ago I knew a John Cronin in Sydney. Could that be you???
While I love your painting, the accompanying music is terrific!! This painting is amazing.
I would love to see a compilation of viewers spontaneous paintings if they would share them. Not the most perfect ones but the progress and results of trying.
Your spontaneous painting lessons are the best!!! Thanks for doing them often! It does require a certain knack to get the beautiful results you get.
Love the stairs! Amazing how the shapes kept transforming!
Thank you I love these spontaneous paintings, the colours are amazing. Absolutely love watching you create!
Beautiful!! Your videos always get me in the moon to paint. Thank you
Thanks. Painting in the "moon" is always an adventure. (JK autocorrect eh?)
AWESOME, STEVE!!!! Magical!
Beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing. 🧑🎨🎨🖌
I love your spontaneous watercolor videos. I definitely need to get my hands on the Shire line of watercolors, not that I need another tube!
I have to say Steve, yours are by far and away my favorite watercolor videos on you tube. I love lots of artists on here but you and your personality make me smile and encourage my artisticside so thank you so much sir.
Thank you so much 😀
Thanks so much Steve. I love this one. These spontaneous paintings you do are so exciting to watch as you never know what is coming next.
Started out looking like a potty accident and ended up absolutely gorgeous, as usual. Thanks for sharing this with us. And, dang you, I’m going to have to spend more money on watercolor books! Again! Ah, well. Guess I know what I’m getting myself for Christmas this year. 🙂
😮😂
Potty accident. 😂 oh my goodness you are so refreshingly blunt. I love it.
Thank you for sharing! That is a very beautiful painting sir!
Absolutely beautiful and inspiring. The painting reminds me of the feeling I got while reading "The Lord of the Rings." I must try your technique.
Love how this turned out Steve. It reminds me of the walk up through the rhododendrons to Craggy Pinnacle on the Blue Ridge Parkway! I really like using the Schmincke granulating paints for the texture they bring. The color separation in Desert Green is just lovely. Thanks for sharing with us...
I know the exact place. Thanks!
You made my day! What a joy to watch!
Love your spontaneous paintings! The stairs are everything! Thanks for sharing with us non Patreon folks.
I always dig your spontaneous creations. Combining the visual treat with a relaxing music selection was just the mental detox I needed today. The "late stairs" turned out great! Thank you so much!
I love these beautiful paintings! Do you ever have something that turns out bad? I doubt it!
Oh yes, sometimes.
You are amazing. Period.
Just beautiful!
That is absolutely gorgeous. I love how you allow the watercolor speak to you rather than forcing your agenda.
Just WOW!
That's my favorite. 😍
Glad You did this video. I've been working with these paints this week and struggling with them. Your video helped me alot. I am now inspired to pick them back up and turn the starters into something beautiful 😊
this may be one of my Favorite paintings youve done! The choice to backlight the trees near the end totally caught me off guard, blew my mind, freakin genius. And the rugged stone looking steps that you seemlessly popped into being at the end. How everything came together..... genuinely made me a bit emotional not gonna lie.
Makes me feel like its an illustration for some symbolic journey, the crest on that hill, the light or fog (or light shining through fog!) behind the tress and the supposed crest of the hill. promising something wonderful on the other side, yet mysterious. and you can never trust how the lay of the land in hills works so it may just be an illusion after-all, when you cross that crest it could be a further winding path climbing higher... LOVE IT
also really kinda want/need that set of Shire super granulating colours now haha.....
These great videos (and I watched quite a few now) are just inspirational. Thanks for sharing amazing visions.
Glad you like them!
Always look forward to these spontaneous paintings, turned out fantastic. The colors are beautiful. Thank you so much.
WOW! Steve, this is stunning-gorgeous. The addition of the stairs completely blew me away. Thank you!!
Steve you absolutely own spontaneous watercolor painting, nobody is better.
Thanks so much!
Wow really beautiful!
Steve is phenomenal to watch as he paints or draws and he does wonderful voiceovers. Overall, his tutorials are technically and artistically and interestingly and pedantically so very well done.
And his down-to-earth humor is fun.
Stunning work! I love the colors. Yay, new book!
Shire good Steve, seriously this was great❤
Magical!!!
Wow. Sooooo inspiring. Thank you. No one makes me want to keep trying to paint, more than you.
Very pretty! Beautiful!
Wow Steve. Another magical presentation. Because of the stairs, I'm drawn to climb them and see what's beyond. Beautiful!
Just amazing!
Really getting into this type of painting .
The colours are amazing! Absolutely love this painting with perfect musical accompaniment. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Hullo Steve, I first started learning watercolor painting from my Gran, she got me going at just 10 years old. Now she only taught me the traditional methods and ONLY them! I remember asking her if I could get some white paint and she said real watercolor painters never used white paint! When I wanted to learn about anything new I would have to go to the library and look at books or just try to figure it out by myself just by getting my paints and paper out and trying! Very much like this video! Thank you for sharing your ideas and techniques with us! Very beautifully done!
That’s the purists approach but it’s far from a universal practice. John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer both used white in their watercolors.
What a lovely gift you have given us! In the midst of worldly chaos, a magical respite of imagination and grace--thank you!
Thanks for sharing with us poor people who can’t contribute.
I just love this!
Thank you for being so generous in sharing your talents and process! Spectacular! I love the subtlety of the fairy holding the duck.
Beautiful painting, thanks for sharing!
Your tutorials are fantastic! Fun and very instructive! Thank you.
Good morning! Sat down this morning to have my coffee and got caught up in your wonderful play with textures and colors! I found myself leaning closer and closer to the screen so I didn't miss a stroke. Oh my goodness! You never fail to brush and dab magic. Love it, Steve, thank you!! (Hah!, even your palette is fun to see)
Thank you so much!
Wow !
I love Ann Blockley’s work (and her father’s as well); I have a few of her books, and this one is on my wishlist. When Poetic Woods was released, I had a feeling that you’d appreciate it! 😊

💜💛💜 Beautiful painting 😃
What a beautiful painting and what a wonderful gift you have! I am trying these but my eyes definitely are having trouble 'seeing things'! But you give me inspiration to keep trying. Thank you so much!
loved it!!
Love the color palate, really does look like something out of The Shire! Or it looks like it could be the shady arbor along The Way in the Pilgrims Progress 😊
Beautiful painting!
Incredibly beautiful. Thank you
Another fabulous demonstration/painting. Thank you ❤
Your spontaneous watercolors are truly inspirational. As a beginner, it is a steep learning curve!
Just remember it's mostly about experimentation to aid your learning. Very valuable. Beautiful pictures are a bonus but not required.
@@mindofwatercolor Thank you ! I always want to run before I can walk 🤔I know I need to slow down and enjoy the process
Beautiful! Just love your spontaneous painting so relaxing! You have brought a whole new dimension to my art! Thanks for sharing !
I just bought a copy of the book and I absolutely love it. So inspirational, as are you! Hope you’re having a fabulous day. Hello from Adelaide, South Australia ❤
So relaxing to watch, beautiful result !
this is fantastic, those textures are incredible ❤❤
Gorgeous! I also bought the Shire set from Schmincke, and augmented it with a brown (I chose Desert), then also Desert Orange and Glacier Pink. When you started applying the Shire Yellow with a palette knife, I thought "smart man" - maybe it's just my box of paints, but for me the Shire Yellow had really low tint strength: the lowest of any paint I've had. I've been trying to make my own "super granulating" yellow mix and that has been fun! Srsly Steve, I think you are the MoW Alchemist!😊
Yes, the Shire Yellow was very weak. I was kind of surprised. Thanks!
Awesome
What to say but…beautiful!!! Thank you for sharing your talent and experience 🥰
Brilliant. Love the outcome
Oh my goodness! This turned out so neat! Thanks for sharing the process. I’ll be looking for the this on Patreon! 🙌🏽
Beautifully organic!😊
Absolutely stunning! Thank you for the book recommendation, will definitely be ordering that 😊
Beautiful as usual! Love your tutorials!
