Patsy was Crazy for loving the man, Tammy was Stand By Your Man, Dolly was Jolene please don't take my man, and Loretta sang You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man, Fist City and Don't Come A Drinkin With Lovin on Your Mind!
In an interview about this song, Tammy said it was not about letting yourself be a victim of your man's abuse or bad behavior but about unconditional love for your spouse. Sticking by him thru good times and bad times.
You mention how this song might be viewed through the contemporary lens of female empowerment but the lyrics put the woman very much in the driving seat of the relationship; she provides the 'two arms to cling to" while he is "just a man". Stand by your man, not just because of love but because he needs the strength of that support. As 'just a man' who has been steadfastly supported by my wife through some of the darkest times I can certainly appreciate that sentiment. After that moment of over-sharing... what makes Tammy's performance so incredible is not just the technical merit of her clear toned and strong vocal production but the emotion she imbues in the lyrics. These are not just words off a sheet but feelings poured straight from the heart. Not many singers in any genre can do that.
I don’t know what Tammy had, but I want some of that. Even her ex tried to clean up and start singing with her again, he moved next door and referred to her husband as his husband-in-law. George Jones’ song “he stopped loving her today” always makes me think of her.
Tammy was absolutely phenomenol!!! She had such a powerhouse voice! She had a hot and heavy love affair that lasted in and out of her marriage to George Jones. She never stopped loving him and he loved her likewise! She had a list of #1 hits as long as my leg! She was born in Prentiss County, Mississippi and had a very hard life until she made a career in Country Music! She, like ELVIS, has a rabbit hole that you really should delve into. Her life reads like a novel. Please research her! "Apartment #9" is also a really good song and so is "D-I-V-O-R-C-E"! Well, actually Tammy did not have a bad song! Everything she sang was spectacular!!! She was inducted into many Hall of Fames and received many accolades and awards! She received the "LIVING LEGEND" Country Music Award, also! She was known as the "First Lady of Country Music" until the day she died! She is very missed by her fans, friends, and family. Thank you for your great reaction! Like I said recently, you are very quickly becoming my favorite reactor!
Her expression, that cracking voice, those glassy eyes on the verge of tearing up. A stunning performance. I'm not entirely sure a woman should stand by a man that's done the things her ex did (Multiple infidelities, or "hard to understand" as she puts it). Any man would be blessed beyond belief to have a woman like this and I think this woman would be appreciated more now than ever.
Tammy was a great singer and if you haven't tried singing this song, then you don't understand how hard the notes are to hit. She was perfection as a country singer.
I just learnt that this was a hit in 1968 in the States. I'm from the Netherlands and over here it wasn't a hit until 1975. And her follow-up hit over here was D.I.V.O.R.C.E. I guess standing by your man isn't enough after all. And her 3rd hit early 1976 over here (1967 in The US) was I don't wanna play house. Was Tammy trying to send a message?
All right Britt !!! You've witnessed the Ohhhh , to George Jones' H2O !! She was a big star on her own , but with her hubby George - they were huge. This is her best song , and you already react3d to George's best "He Stopped Loving Her Today". Now you should hear their great Duet "Golden Rings" .... and others. Mmmmmmm
I was born in the 60s, a kid/teen in the 70s and at the time I hated my parent's old school Country that they listened to - like Tammy Wynette. As the years have gone by I come to appreciate it more and more and really enjoy it now. Something else too - those classic Country artists were so appreciative of their fans and gracious and humble on stage. Its something you don't really see as much anymore.
Tammy and George Jones were married for a time. A couple of their songs are "We're Not The Jet set" and "Golden Rings". Johonny Cash was married to June Carter Cash, one of the members of the Carter Family.
I Love Tammy Wynette, my Mother would play her and Engelbert Humperdink's records all day long back in the late 60's, I was in the 5th grade at the time.
Thank you so much. Tammy is one of my favorites. I grew up with her music and she helped to teach me how to be a woman and how to treat my man. My Mom had a beautiful voice and I can remember her going around the house singing Tammy's song, "I Don't Wanna Play House".
'wow, Tammy Wynette, her voice OMG. I have a lot of old records but not Tammy Wynette. I must find at least one Tammy Wynette record. Thanks for reacting to this great music.
In the 90’s Tammy collaborated with a house, music group called the KLF. The track they produced was called “justified and ancient“ it is just brilliant.
That man was Johnny Cash. He was married to June Carter Cash. Tammy was married to George Jones. They were good friends, but, not lovers. June was part of the Carter Family. They were one of the founders of modern country music. I suggest you listen Johnny, June, and George. They are all really good. Here's Johnny & June singing "Jackson". ruclips.net/video/4GvD_NQrLFo/видео.html
Every straight male was in LOVE with Tammy Wynette. She was gorgeous, and her vocal ability was and is eternally captivating. She left this world WAY too soon.
There was actually a big "to-do" between Tammy Wynette and Hillary Clinton over this song. Hillary kept trying to call Tammy to apologize, but Tammy was mad and wouldn't answer her phone. Hillary finally called Burt Reynolds, who then called Tammy and talked her into letting Hillary apologize. The whole thing was hilarious to me.
It's funny to me that Hillary said that she wasn't Tammy Wynette and yet when her man cheated on her in front of the entire world what did she do? She's *still* standing.
THAT man in Black was Johnny Cash...Tammy Wynette was my Momma's favorite singer!! Listened to her all my life! My favorites are...Your Good Girl Is Gonna Go Bad and I Don't Wanna Playhouse!!
Johnny Cash had a TV show from back before my time. However, from the clips I've seen it must have been a great show. As others have mentioned this is one of the legends of country music. I actually got to see her in concert back in 79 or 80. A great performer. Great reaction.
Tammy took alot of crap-ola for this song in some quarters, it was in the 60's in middle of the heights of Woman's Rights movement. She didn't get the uproar, lol, after all as she sings "He's just a man!" Johnny Cash was married to June Carter and Tammy, at the time, was married to George Jones... that was a stormy marriage...but she stood by George about as long as she could stand, well and then... His drinking did that in
This music ALWAYS takes me back to being little. My siblings at school, me and mom home alone, her cleaning house and doing dishes with this music playing on old floor stereo!! Bouncing around the house!! Songs from this era of country will forever be the soundtrack to my tot year memories.
Different time, different standards. That “flirty” business was common and not taken seriously. A lot of the old country songs reflect an attitude about the “place” of women that we question today. I just enjoy it for what it was. And I love your analysis of the message.
You are young , lovely and wise. I love your reactions because either you are an amazing actress or you react honestly. You have a little vocal game as well. Blessings and thanks for the distraction and laugh.
She’s talking about a kind of love that most can’t understand now. Just like Loretta fighting for her man. It’s like building a business and someone coming in and asking you to leave. It was about survival in those days. And commitment. No defense. Just description.
BRITT! "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad" for an even rowdier side of her. But then on the other end of the spectrum, please please please check out, Too Far Gone. Her phrasing is devastating in this and it makes my allergies act up every time and I think it's a live performance also from maybe the Johnny Cash show. Just the look in her eyes and the way she sings it is so powerful, even though I just grew up hearing it on the radio and later on a cassette tape of her greatest hits that I bought. And that is all fantastic.
Hi! You should check out Golden Rings, Your good girls gonna go bad, Divorce. Tammy was married to George Jones and even though they divorced they still loved each other. There is a series on showtime about their life!
Johnny Cash was never interested in Tammy Wynette. He was married to June Carter Cash until he died. She was married numerous times most notably to George Jones.
Cash was just being friendly, his wife was probably just off stage and possibly his mother in law. Mother Maybelle and June Carter saved his life. He asked Maybelle and her sister for permission before joining them to sing a hymn. On his tv show.
Tammy was a trail blazer. A women providing a woman’s point of view in a man’s world. Sounds sort of not-so-feminist but really this song speaks to female empowerment… after all he’s just a man. But hey, love is love.
This song caused a huge controversy when Hillary Clinton said she was not a stand by your man kind of woman. I don’t remember the exact quote but you’re absolutely correct that nowadays that song doesn’t play well even though it’s a country music classic.
Johnny only had eyes for one woman, June Carter Cash!
The man was Johnny Cash and I would describe it as one music legend in awe of another music legend.
Johnny Cash recognized Tammy as one legend to another. He was in love with his wife June.
She does some heartbreakers: D I V O R C E, and my favorite I Don’t Wanna Play House.
Tammy's voice has been described as though she is singing it with tears in her voice.
Patsy was Crazy for loving the man, Tammy was Stand By Your Man, Dolly was Jolene please don't take my man, and Loretta sang You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man, Fist City and Don't Come A Drinkin With Lovin on Your Mind!
Then you had the carter family before that with worried man.
Classic Country is by far the best Country music around ...love it and will listen to it before the new country anytime!!!
In an interview about this song, Tammy said it was not about letting yourself be a victim of your man's abuse or bad behavior but about unconditional love for your spouse. Sticking by him thru good times and bad times.
Ms Tammy, Ms Loretta, and Ms Dolly were great friends and would get together and make records, it was magical. Country Music royalty.
And Patsy. Before she was gone. 😞
My goodness, she was beautiful
Probably the most "teary-eyed voice" in country music history!
It’d be a close call between her and Patsy. I might give Patsy an edge for Crazy. But it’d be awfully close.
Again, Tammy was just talent, raw, plain talent. No machines making it sound better, just her!
You mention how this song might be viewed through the contemporary lens of female empowerment but the lyrics put the woman very much in the driving seat of the relationship; she provides the 'two arms to cling to" while he is "just a man". Britt, I really love your reactions..You are a very intelligent young woman. Keep up the good work!
Girl, you hear we we've been hearing for 45 years and it still affects us like it is you. She was the epitomy of country.
Her and George Jones were great together as a duet but their marriage was another whole story but when they sang together it was magical.
Right On with your Comments!!
Tammy was strong and powerful. She had a very difficult life.
One of the most unique voices in country music, Loved her! RIP Tammy.
She's so beautiful and her voice cuts glass.
I don’t know what Tammy had, but I want some of that. Even her ex tried to clean up and start singing with her again, he moved next door and referred to her husband as his husband-in-law. George Jones’ song “he stopped loving her today” always makes me think of her.
Thats why they called her "The first lady of country music". She was awsome
Think she was the first female singer to sell a million records
Tammy had a "tear" in her voice which was very unique
Another all time great. Tammy was so special.
Tammy was absolutely phenomenol!!! She had such a powerhouse voice! She had a hot and heavy love affair that lasted in and out of her marriage to George Jones. You said it exactly Britt. She wasn't saying forget about your needs and respect. Just take of him and love him and he will give you anything he can.
Tammy is the First Lady of Country Music
Tammy was one of the greatest singers to ever live. Such a clear voice also easy on the eyes
Tammy is a country legend
The QUEEN of Country!
I absolutely adore the velvety overtones in her voice in the lower register!
Thanks!
Tammy’s voice was special ❤

Tammy was a great singer and if you haven't tried singing this song, then you don't understand how hard the notes are to hit. She was perfection as a country singer.
Absolutely love your reactions. You are an old soul for sure.
Country music artists are like a family!
I just learnt that this was a hit in 1968 in the States. I'm from the Netherlands and over here it wasn't a hit until 1975. And her follow-up hit over here was D.I.V.O.R.C.E. Was Tammy trying to send a message?
Yep. I particularly enjoyed her, "I Don't Wanna Play House," ( it makes my mommy cry.)
Britt you nailed this one great reaction 💙
All right Britt !!! You've witnessed the Ohhhh , to George Jones' H2O !! She was a big star on her own , but with her hubby George - they were huge. This is her best song , and you already react3d to George's best "He Stopped Loving Her Today".

What a great song! Great poetry, great voice!
This is a song from my childhood, tunes are the pins that transfix the butterflies of nostalgic memories.
Oh my God. It is so true. All I want is a woman who will love me as i am as I will love her. Someone who will stand beside me and support me
She's stayed with me 49 yrs (reciprocated) and we are BLESSED!
Please react to Fist City, by Loretta Lynn!! You’ll love it !
I was born in the 60s, a kid/teen in the 70s and at the time I hated my parent's old school Country that they listened to - like Tammy Wynette. You nailed it you're smart girl
“Longingly looking” at Tammy Wynette…
my God who WOULD’nt???!!!!
Yes, Tammy Wynette did say "Stand By Your Man". But she also sang, "D-I-V-O-R-C-E". Check that one out too.
these woman in the 50and 60s were pioneers they were brave and stunning
Tammy and George Jones were married for a time. A couple of their songs are "We're Not The Jet set" and "Golden Rings". Johonny Cash was married to June Carter Cash, one of the members of the Carter Family.
Im so glad you put it in the right perspective. Her voice is crazy good.
I Love Tammy Wynette, my Mother would play her and Engelbert Humperdink's records all day long back in the late 60's, I was in the 5th grade at the time.
DONT overthink it all. Love the song.
Tammy belonged with George Jones.. Johnny was married to June Carter Cash...
Thank you so much. Tammy is one of my favorites. I grew up with her music and she helped to teach me how to be a woman and how to treat my man. My Mom had a beautiful voice and I can remember her going around the house singing Tammy's song, "I Don't Wanna Play House".
She was married to George Jones. They were famous. He was married and madly in love with his wife.
Beautiful strong vocals! Like her!
I saw Tammy at a small country fair in upstate NY. Every year they would get a well known name in country music to perform.
Listen to.."Til I Can Make It On My Own"- "Singing My Song"..Both By Tammy Wynette
That man was Johnny Cash. He was married to June Carter Cash. Tammy was married to George Jones. They were good friends, but, not lovers. June was part of the Carter Family. He was married and very in love with his wife June Carter Cash, whom passed six months before he left us as well
THAT man in Black was Johnny Cash...Tammy Wynette was my Momma's favorite singer!! Listened to her all my life! My favorites are...Your Good Girl Is Gonna Go Bad and I Don't Wanna Playhouse!!
Tammy Wynette was married to George Jones ("He Stopped Loving Her Today"). She is the meek and mild type, quiet and shy. She is very sweet.
No she was married to George Jones. She is talking about George in this song.
Johnny Cash had a TV show from back before my time. However, from the clips I've seen it must have been a great show. As others have mentioned this is one of the legends of country music. I actually got to see her in concert back in 79 or 80. A great performer. Great reaction.
To think that her and George Jones shared the stage many times… well, it’s almost too much voice to comprehend.
Everyone loved Tammy

Her voice is considered country twang.

power and emotion like no other

Hi! You should check out Golden Rings, Your good girls gonna go bad, Divorce. Tammy was married to George Jones and even though they divorced they still loved each other. There is a series on showtime about their life!
Fun fact she was a hairdresser, always kept her license current just in case that singing thing didn’t work out!
Amazing reaction! Well said...
45 years later and this song still gives me goosebumps what a woman.
Johnny Cash was never interested in Tammy Wynette. He was married to June Carter Cash until he died. She was married numerous times most notably to George Jones.
Tammy was married to George Jones. There is a mini series with Jessica Chastain that tells the story.
Forgive forgive him? Give him out of love. How's the love you can't? Stand by your man?
It's a wonderful absolutely wonderful message for the women around I hello get it right
yay you get it, young lady. this is about love, not anything else. great song.
What a character you are!!! 🥳
Britt...................another classic from Tammy.................D-I-V-O-R-C-E
Johnny Cash was in love with his wife June Carter Cash.
♥ You could pour Tammy's voice over pancakes.
Cash was just being friendly, his wife was probably just off stage and possibly his mother in law. Mother Maybelle and June Carter saved his life. He asked Maybelle and her sister for permission before joining them to sing a hymn. On his tv show.

Hand over heart. My hero.
JUST A GREAT ARTIS AND A GREAT SONG.
You got exactly what Tammy was trying to say...
This song caused a huge controversy when Hillary Clinton said she was not a stand by your man kind of woman. I don’t remember the exact quote but you’re absolutely correct that nowadays that song doesn’t play well even though it’s a country music classic.
Tammy was brilliant. I warmly recommend her "Honey (I miss you)". Extremely sad and beautiful.
Johnny was almost always in love with June
