Just a few of from Chariey’s hits. IS ANYONE GOING TO SAN ANTONE, I DON’T THINK SHE’S IN LOVE ANYMORE, ALL I HAVE TO OFFER YOU IS ME, ROLL ON MISSISSIPPI, THE SNAKES CRAWL AT NIGHT
Charley Pride is one of three African-American members of the Grand Ole Opry (the others being DeFord Bailey and Darius Rucker). He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. He won the Entertainer of the Year award at the Country Music Association Awards in 1971 and was awarded a Grammy for "Best Country Vocal Performance, Male" in 1972.
Grand Tour. Auto correct done you dirty! Lol. George Jones did it first. Aaron did a cover. But I heard Aaron first and now I don't care for George's version.
Not the first, there were a very few black men in the business previous to Charlie, but he was the biggest. My favorite story is when Loretta Lynn was presenting an award, and she was told that if Charlie were to win, she was to take two steps back to avoid being “too close”. He did win, so instead of stepping back, she hugged him. Pure class.
I saw them in concert opening for Jason Isbell a couple of years ago and they were nothing short of amazing. Highly recommend seeing them live if they ever come through your town!
He is maybe the most Loved Country star of the 1970’s and 1989’s. He is a man that no one has ever said a bad word about. Check out “Roll on Mississippi” and “All I Have to Offer You is Me”.
Keep checking Charlie out, he was absolutely awesome, his songs were always so smooth and they always made you feel good, he was one of my all time favorite country artists, what an American treasure he was, his music always brings me back, loved him!!!!! Glad you're discovering him, he belongs on the Rushmore of artists
There was a time in the early 70's he sold more country LP's than anyone. He is an American treasure, a great man and my favorite county artist of all time.
He was the first black country star. He was by all accounts a great human being in addition to being a great entertainer. Sadly he passed not too long ago in late 2020.
"Is Anybody Going to San Antone" is another HUGE classic Charlie Pride hit from the late '60s. I am going on 70 now, and as a teenager growing up in rural Oklahoma, I LOVED this man. He has a great voice and style, and he is a good and decent man. RIP, Charlie Pride. You are loved and remembered for a reason.
I presently am recovering from autoimmune related covid pneumonia and it is so hard. Yes, I was initially vaccinated and boostered but my lyme disease and blood disorders made me susceptible to getting it. Plus I’m 61 yrs old but my autoimmune disease has made this so hard. I thought i was getting better but running fever again 10 days after being let out of hospital . Be viligant ppl esp w risk factors
DeFord Bailey was the first black Country *performer* with harmonica solos in the 20's and 30's but Charlie was the first black majorly popular Country *singer.* His first single *The Snakes Crawl At Night* was released in 1966. In the late summer of 1966, on the strength of his early releases, he was booked for his first large show, in Detroit's Olympia Stadium. Since no biographical information had been included with those singles, few of the 10,000 country fans who came to the show knew Pride was Black and discovered the fact only when he walked onto the stage, at which point the applause trickled off to silence. "I knew I'd have to get it over with sooner or later," Pride later remembered. "I told the audience: 'Friends, I realize it's a little unique, me coming out here - with a permanent suntan - to sing country and western to you. But that's the way it is.' " The show became the first of a long and active career playing to large audiences, his race soon becoming a minor detail compared to his success. In 1967, he became the first black performer to appear at the Grand Ole Opry since founding member DeFord Bailey, who had last appeared in 1941.
The man who introduced him is a Grand Ole Opry member Marty Stuart, who at one time was married to one of Johnny Cash's daughters, but who is now married to another country legend, Connie Smith. Charley Pride (-ey not -ie) who won Entertainer of the Year, the first Black artist to do that in the early 1970s was a hit maker and by all accounts one of the nicest men in country music, who sadly passed from Covid a couple years ago. He is one of the greatest legends in country music. My childhood was filled with Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves and Charley Pride because those were my mom's favorites.
The Great Mr. CHARLIE PRIDE!! LOVE THIS LEGEND!!! You'll never know what this man went through. When his music was first released on the radio stations, the country genres and people fell in love with his music and his voice! Charlie's music went straight to number one on the Country Music Charts!! When white folks seen for the first time that their favorite Country Music Artist was black, yep, things went a little Topsy-turvy 😮. But when he went on stage, his real fans, the ones that counted, were right there cheering him on!! My mom bought all of his albums, I grew up listening to this amazing singer. He's a kind, loving and intelligent artist and human being ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
THis song was #1 in 1971. Charley was a gift to all of us, what an incredible man and voice. It's fun to watch you swoon over the voices, the clothes, and yes the men who were SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH!
He was the first, the only one for quite a while. Began his career in the 1960s/70s. Good rabbit hole to fall into. Chrystal Chandeliers, Is Anyone Going to San Antone, The Snakes Crawl at Night just to name a few.
Oh yeah, Charlie Pride was prime radio play dude. What a great voice and presence! I used to always confuse him with Charlie Rich (the Silver Fox) who had hits at the same time in the 70's. Both gentlemen became Country Icons.
I was fortunate to see Charlie Pride perform many years ago at the New Mexico State Fair. His voice was great and so SMOOOOOOOOOOOTH. He was to my knowledge the first man of color that made in big in Country Music. Sadly he passed away in December 2020 from covid. Not my favorite song of his but he was fantastic. RIP Charlie; Your music will last forever!😊
Charley is one of the all time greats. I listened to him to since I was a little kid. " Is Anybody going to San Antone? " and " Crystal Chandelier" are two you HAVE to hear. He could have played Pro baseball but I guess he felt knew where he belonged. Singing his beautiful country music. He came out in the 60s I believe and once people heard him sing, they didnt care what color he was.God bless you and yours, Britt. I loved this.
This is the country music that I grew up on. Charlie Pride was one of the greats. It didn't matter what his skin color was. We thoroughly enjoyed listening to him.
Charley Frank Pride (March 18, 1934 - December 12, 2020) was an American singer, guitarist, and professional baseball player. His greatest musical success came in the early to mid-1970s, when he was the best-selling performer for RCA Records. During the peak years of his recording career (1966-1987), he had 52 top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, 30 of which made it to number one. He won the Entertainer of the Year award at the Country Music Association Awards in 1971 and was awarded a Grammy for "Best Country Vocal Performance, Male" in 1972. Pride is one of three African-American members of the Grand Ole Opry (the others being DeFord Bailey and Darius Rucker). He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000.
Charlie Pride, from Sledge, Mississippi, was introduced by Marty Stuart, from Philadelphia, Mississippi, which is about 25 miles from my home, Louisville, Mississippi, which is also the home of Carl Jackson, who worked with Glen Campbell, and is widely known in Nashville, as a great songwriter, musician, producer.
True. He began his singing career in Montana when his baseball career tanked. So Mississippi and Montana (and then the rest of the country) will have to share the honor. :D
Yes he was. Because most of got our music from the radio he was able to make an end run around nervous industry promoters. All we had to is hear his voice . We were blown over. The fans couldn't care less.
Charlie Pride was not just a legendary country music artist. He was a very good athlete, especially baseball. He loved to go see his favorite baseball team, the Texas Rangers. He has thrown out the first pitch at several games and has also sang the national anthem before the start of games. He unfortunately died before his beloved Rangers won the World Series in 2023.
Hi Britt. There was a performer named DeFord Bailey who was a founding member of the Grand Ole Opry back in the 40s. DeFord last appeared on the Opry in aboumt 1941 and Charley was the next black singer to appear on the Opry in 1967. He has a huge string of hits and awards. Sadly Charley passed due to Covid complications in December of 2020 at 84 years old. Charley served in the Army and in fact was on leave around Christmas time when he and his lovely wife Rozene got married. He also had a 30+ mile long section of highway near his hometown renamed The Charley Pride Highway. He was also a baseball player both in the army and afterwards. He played off and on for several teams in the Negro Leagues and also in the Minor leagues. After he hit it big he used to go every spring as a guest and work out with the Chicago Cubs and later owned a piece of the Texas Rangers. A few of my fave songs of his HMMMM... All I have to Offer You is Me, Is Anybody Going to San Antone, Burgers and Fries. I'll stop there though a list of his great songs could go on and on. ; ))
I met him in a small club in my hometown after he had played a show in Maryland. They wanted to party after the show, and dropped in at the club. He was the nicest guy. He got up and sang a couple songs with the band playing, and he danced with a few of us regulars. Such a great guy. RIP Charley. Thanks for the music and the memories ♥
Love your reactions. Charlie was an awesome singer and yes, he was the first black country singer and sadly for several of his first records, the record company didn't put his picture on the album cover as they knew, or thought they knew, that they wouldn't sell as many. Thankfully, they woke up and learned that skin color has nothing to do with how good a person can sing.
Charlie Pride was the first black country and western superstar. But his first love was baseball and from 1950 till ‘63 he played semipro ball for Memphis Red Soxs in the American Negro League. He would sing to his team mates on the bus as they traveled from game to game.. He’d sing the National Anthem at the games in 1965 he tried out for the New York Mets and didn’t make it so he turned his attention to singing full time. By 1971 Pride had eight singles that reached number one on the US Country Hit Parade and also charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
My favorite Charlie Pride songs: • San Antone • Kaw Liga (Hank Williams Sr cover) • The Snakes Crawl at Night • Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger • Crystal Chandeliers • Burgers and Fries • Roll on Mississippi
My dad had a 8 track tape of Charlie Pride and I remember as a 3 year old standing up in my dad’s truck singing all his songs! Such great memories and I love Charlie Pride!!
When I was a kid, my grandparents would go to see all kinds of artists from this era of country. Luckily, I got to go to most of them. Charlie Pride was one of the nicest and most professional singers ever. His voice is one of a kind, and he was one of the greats.
Charlie Pride used to play at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo sometimes and everyone who met him said he was one of the nicest guys you would ever want to know and he was a real great entertainer. God Bless Him
Charley was one of my grandparents favorite singers. I was at a Texas Rangers baseball game in the mid 80’s. Heard a commotion down the concourse and saw him jogging toward me in shorts and flip flops grinning ear to ear. He was acknowledging everyone that waved at him.
Crazy thing is, in the beginning of his career, they wanted him to just produce records, not go on tour for fear of racism. They underestimate country fans though, I never met ANYONE who didn't absolutely love his music. His songs always ended too soon, his voice was silk....sad thing is that he passed away with covid
Cool video. I live in small town Minnesota, less than 2,000 people. Charlie pride sang at our county fair and my mom got the privilege of making his supper and meeting him. One hell of a man!!!!!!!
Well said, Charlie Pride transcends. Thirty-five years ago, when I was a small boy in rural South Dakota, this was the song my Daddy dang to me at bed time. Charlie Pride is Country music.
I loved Charlie. I saw him in concert once and my friend who was with me, to his absolute delight, saw Charlie, his wife, and his son Dion at a bar after the concert. They had a drink together. He said Charlie was just as sweet in person has he was on stage.
Charley Pride is a hoot !!! Such a nice person .... Comes out of the 60's thru the 70's with many hits .... --- born and raised in the country south of Memphis ....
oh man here you go again bringing up my old memories, i come from a small country town in Australia of about 1000 people and we all loved Charlie, i worked at the post office and when ever anyone went to the golf club you would here our postmaster drunk singing top voice, "Oh the snakes crawl at night" hehe it became a catchphrase to describe him, this is Charlie a little on in years, his young voice was a tad more distinct, the smile on your face is why i love your reactions so much. you are my start to the day. take care
Charlie Pride was always one of my favorite performers. "Kiss an Angel Good Morning " was definitely one of my favorite songs as a kid. Another of his great hits was "Green, Green Grass of Home". The show that he was performing on was the Marty Stuart Show. I have seen him perform in person. Back in the late 60's and early 70's most folks only got to hear the music through a static filled radio. No one really knew that Mr Pride was black until he was seen in concert and unfortunately during that time a number of folks were racist and left the concert in protest. A lot of those ignorant people broke the records that they had purchased. The whole thing was crazy, but Mr Pride did not give up and kept performing, and finally gained the recognition of the Country Music Artist that he truly deserves.
This was one of our staples in karaoke back its heyday. I would sing this, my wife would sing Angel of the Morning. It was fun. We weren't any good, but the drunks loved it.
My first concert in 1973, I was ten years old, was Charlie Pride. Ronnie Milsap (check him out) opened for him. It was an epic experience at that age. I *Adore* Charley Pride!!
Charley was my grandfathers favorite singer through his life. He would be walking around just singing this song or 'Crystal Chandelier' or 'Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger'.
Yes, the first. You gotta realize that most people heard him on the radio and fell in love with his voice. Then they saw him on TV, maybe a long time later. So many were surprised to see the color of his skin. He was my mom's favorite singer. I went to the Oregon State Fair in the early 80's with my mom, sister and 1 1/2 yr old son. My son was obsessed with his music. I was sitting on the isle in the small tent venue we were in. When Charlie started singing Kawliga, he got away from me and started dancing in the isle. After the song, Charlie mentioned the tow head in the isle enjoying himself. Such a down to earth guy. Check out Kawliga, and so many more.
Charlie is in the Country Music Hall of Fame and he was a Staple of the Grand ole Opry (The "Holy Temple of Country Music")! Another Charlie hit is "Is Anybody going to San Antone?" Another Great Country Artist was Freddy Fender... Two of his Greatest Hits are "Before the next Teardrop Falls" or (My mama's Favorite (RIP)) "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights".
OMG, this just popped up on my RUclips page and it sure took me down memory lane. I actually had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Charlie Pride. I was just a young asst mgr of a certain jewelry store here in Dallas and one day who popped through the door but Charlie Pride. Seeing this video took me right back to those days and let me assure you, Charlie Pride was the real deal. He was as genuine as they come and we became friends. Some times he would just come and hang out at the store, Oh man, just thinking about him brings tears to my eyes. And yes Charlie Pride was a big deal, a BIG, BIG deal but what struck me when I first met him is he was as humble in real life as his presence on stage. I know he won several awards but for me, he was just my friend. I'm so glad you found his music and hope you explore his life and music. God rest his soul and Charlie, thank you for being you.
Nashville 1985, The Rose Room, two miles from the airport, Tuesday nite, writers nite, a man in jeans and white t-shirt with a ball cap came up on stage, as sonn as he sang his first word I knew it was Charlie Pride, he just came to hang out with his buddies and jam a little, felt kinda blessed.
Back in my radio days we had a regionally-famous singer here who used to introduce himself in live shows by saying, "You've heard of singers with names like Charlie PRIDE, Johnny CASH and Charlie RICH -- my name is Tommy Faile!" Always got a laugh.
We had Charley Pride on 8-Track in my parents old ford station wagon, he was a favorite when we drove anywhere on summer holidays. "The Snakes Crawl at Night" was my favorite as a kid.
Charley Pride was the first major African-American singer superstar in country music. He had many hit songs in his career. Listen to Kaw-Kiga, All I Have to Offer you is Me, Is Anyone Going to San Antoine and The Snakes Crawl at Night. He had 52 top-10 hits 30 of which teached number one.He was chosen CMA Entertainer of the Year in 1971 and won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance in 1972.
Charley Pride is country music royalty. I remember my grandparents listening to him when I was a kid back in the 70's and 80's...great memories.
Me too
I always smile when I hear Charlie Pride ❤
Just a few of from Chariey’s hits. IS ANYONE GOING TO SAN ANTONE, I DON’T THINK SHE’S IN LOVE ANYMORE, ALL I HAVE TO OFFER YOU IS ME, ROLL ON MISSISSIPPI, THE SNAKES CRAWL AT NIGHT

Charlie Pride was a gentleman and a superstar who sang REAL country music. He is missed. Great reaction.

And he's married to the gorgeous Miss Connie Smith.
Do a deep dive on Marty Stuart. His music is so good
I saw them in concert opening for Jason Isbell a couple of years ago and they were nothing short of amazing. Highly recommend seeing them live if they ever come through your town!
I love watching youngsters discover Charlie Pride
Especially this video. When he comes out on stage...

Charlie Pride's voice is melted butter on Grandma's homemade biscuits. Loved Charlie. RIP ❤❤❤❤
There was a time in the early 70's he sold more country LP's than anyone. He is an American treasure, a great man and my favorite county artist of all time.
I'm afraid you may need to explain what an "LP" is, the younger generation will likely have no idea. lol
One of the best country artists EVER, of any race. He's where he belongs: in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
He was the first black country star. He was by all accounts a great human being in addition to being a great entertainer. Sadly he passed not too long ago in late 2020.
One of his family members said (why are you singing their music) that really makes me mad for them to say that
Ray Charles had country hits way back in 1962.
The Jackie Robinson of country music.
Absolutely!
Charlie Pride mentored many performers.
"kaw-Liga" another great charlie pride song must hear

Whenever Charlie's voice came on the radio, my mom turned the volume UP and we had to shut up!!
My fave song is Roll On Mississippi ❤

He would sing to his team mates on the bus as they traveled from game to game.. He’d sing the National Anthem at the games in 1965 he tried out for the New York Mets and didn’t make it so he turned his attention to singing full time. By 1971 Pride had eight singles that reached number one on the US Country Hit Parade and also charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
One of my dad's favorite songs to my mom. Miss you both so much!
My favorite Charlie Pride songs:
• San Antone
• Kaw Liga (Hank Williams Sr cover)
• The Snakes Crawl at Night
• Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger
• Crystal Chandeliers
• Burgers and Fries
• Roll on Mississippi
Charlie Pride is LEGENDARY! ♥♥♥
My childhood! His voice was perfection.
* sings along at the top of my voice *
My dad had a 8 track tape of Charlie Pride and I remember as a 3 year old standing up in my dad’s truck singing all his songs! Such great memories and I love Charlie Pride!!
Always loved Charlie's voice, great performer
When I was a kid, my grandparents would go to see all kinds of artists from this era of country. Luckily, I got to go to most of them. Charlie Pride was one of the nicest and most professional singers ever. His voice is one of a kind, and he was one of the greats.
Charlie pride was loved by many I listen to him all my Life and still like to hear him sing
YES , WHAT TREAT IT IS TO HEAR HIS VOICE !!!!!!! MY GOD HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN SINCE I HEARD HIM?
Charlie died at 86 in 2020 from complications due to Covid 19. Kiss an Angel... was his #1 hit in 1971. He emerged as a country singer late 1960's.
He was not the first Black Singer, in Country Music but. ABSOLUTELY the very best, in my humble opinion.
I got to see him perform live in the late nineties. He still sounded great and put on a terrific show. Love that Man!
He's black 🖤😭😭🖤 yes he is & royalty of county music
I’m so glad you reacted to mr Charley pride he is truly a legend and one of my favorites
Charlie Pride was one of my all time favorite country singers growing up, and still is.
Charlie Pride used to play at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo sometimes and everyone who met him said he was one of the nicest guys you would ever want to know and he was a real great entertainer. God Bless Him
One of the first songs I ever learned. Love it.
🙏🏼👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I love Charlie pride I get hypnotized by his voice.
Charley was one of my grandparents favorite singers. I was at a Texas Rangers baseball game in the mid 80’s. Heard a commotion down the concourse and saw him jogging toward me in shorts and flip flops grinning ear to ear. He was acknowledging everyone that waved at him.
Charlie Pride was a fabulous star with that Mississippi Delta voice. He has a fantastic catalog.
I got the privilege age of seeing him in concert in KC, in the 60's he was kind and sweet signed autograph for this little girl!!! Love this man!!
--- born and raised in the country south of Memphis ....
oh man here you go again bringing up my old memories, i come from a small country town in Australia of about 1000 people and we all loved Charlie, i worked at the post office and when ever anyone went to the golf club you would here our postmaster drunk singing top voice, "Oh the snakes crawl at night" hehe it became a catchphrase to describe him, this is Charlie a little on in years, his young voice was a tad more distinct, the smile on your face is why i love your reactions so much. you are my start to the day. take care
Have loved him for many years !!!
Yes a black amazing country singer my favorite!!!
Another Charlie hit is "Is Anybody going to San Antone?"
Another Great Country Artist was Freddy Fender... Two of his Greatest Hits are "Before the next Teardrop Falls" or (My mama's Favorite (RIP)) "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights".
This was wonderful. I’ve always enjoyed Charlie’s music.
I have listened to Charley Pride since I was a boy. True country greatness right there!!!!!
Back then most music was heard on the radio...many many people were shocked when they finally saw him on TV, LOL!
Mr. Pride's story is a great American success story! I really like "Is anybody going to San Antone"
Props to Charlie Pride , He had to work thru a lot. It never stopped him Thanks Charlie.
Loved his voice! This song from '71 is one of his best!
Been a fan of his for 40 years. Love your excitement. Thanks
Charlie Pride is so loved in Country music. One of his close friends was Loretta Lynn. I was so sad when we lost both of them.
Love Charley Pride. A true country icon. So sad we lost him to covid back in 2020. He will be forever remebered and loved by all country fans.
