In this video join me (and Joli) for a super long 2 hour plant chores video! There have been lots of plant to do's recently - repotting, watering, dusting, pruning, propagating, repotting, potting up and soooo much more. My plant chores have been getting on top slightly recently and I've been feeling a bit burnt out and overwhelmed by all my plant care. I talk about plant burnout in this video, and some of the things I do to stay motivated when it comes to caring for my houseplants. A little tip for repotting if you want to get a lot of dirt off of delicate roots, I keep a bowl of water near by and gently jiggle the root ball in the water. I find it helps get off the dirt without a whole lot of contact. If you wanna save the soil you can use a cheese cloth or soemthing like that to separate the water and soil after. With this method you can also use or add hydrogen peroxide if you’re worried about rot or fly larvae!

Love long videos. It takes me at least three hours to water all of my plants and I like listening to videos during.
I absolutely LOVE your long videos, it motivated me to actually get some plant chores of my own done. Typically 30-45 min is short enough that I just enjoy watching, but you were getting so much done that I wanted to as well! On a similar note, I would totally enjoy a plant burnout "challenge" video like you mentioned. Sometimes I just need someone else to pick what to start with and that sounds like a great motivator.
I put on a crime podcast to do my plant chores 😂 I would LOVE to see a plant burnout “challenge” type video where we all have do the tasks cause that would definitely help motivate me personally
love your videos and I truly believe that this new thumbnail represents you much much better. I remember thinking that there was a disconnect between the honesty of your videos and the "staged"feeling I got from the thumbnails.
I got into plants after moving into a dark dank studio with teeny windows that needed some life in it. Ended up losing all but a couple of my 40+ collection due to becoming deathly ill from black mold and not being able to care for myself, let alone dozens of plants which were full of mycotoxins. A year into recovery and i've now rebuilt my collection in a space that gets FAR more natural light.
Good news is that buying new plants is half the fun, and now i'm no longer stressed about losing plants. It's okay to lose everything. You'll get through it and rebuild after mourning.
Some tips for struggling with plant burnout;
-declutter your collection. I went from 80/90 plants to around 50 and it has made such a big difference in taking care of them, but also seeing problems way earlier (I'm an underwaterer and I now spot it when they get dry and see pests way earlier before it spreads)
-I also have been putting most of my collection into lechuza pon. It makes me not have to think about fertilizing for a while and underwatering is not a big problem anymore. Everyone that needed weekly watering is now in pon and now I only have to water about every 2 weeks.
-I've also kept only the plants I really like and are not too fussy. I refuse to get a cabinet, put up growlights everywhere, etc. So the plants that are still alive, are the strong ones. Yes that means I can't have all of them, but it also takes away a lot of stress.
-I also tend to wait a bit longer before buying the new "it" plant because they often come crashing down in price and I prefer to pay half the price.

Re: plant burnout.
I feel with any type of “care giving” we can feel burnout.
Which is hard to fathom since plants are supposed to be a stress reducer 🤷🏼♀️
I’m gung ho at times and once in a while I get “what did I ever think I was getting myself in to” 😂
It passes though.
My plant room gets fairly warm in the summer months. Something that has been working well for me with my soil plants is adding an a couple of centimeters worth of leca at the bottom of the pot before adding the soil and plant. Then I keep the plant in a saucer with about 1 to 1 1/2 cms of water to make a homemade self watering pot. It seems that the leca wicks the water at just the right pace to keep the soil slightly moist so the plants don’t suffer from drying out completely. It makes the upkeep a lot easier for me. I wonder if something like this might work well for you in the heat of your new home? I always enjoy your videos, thanks!

Omg...I really loved this episode. I'm in tears right now because you perfectly explained how beneficial plant care is for mental health. My journey started after my father's death last year. I also wish I had discovered this journey sooner in my life. All my life, I've dealt with anxiety, depression, adhd and now menopause, so I wish I became addicted to this sooner other than the other ways I used to cope throughout my life. Thank you for sharing a bit of your story, it makes me feel a little alone in my obsession with plant care. It provides so much hope to looking forward to the next day. 😊
My silver sword has just started producing leaves in/with pronounced cataphils, but it has sized up majorly, I always thought it was a sign of the plant maturing 😊

So my silver sword did the same thing (no cataphyll and then a cataphyll) - I always thought it was so weird no one talked about it! haha
Secondly, before you cut that moonshine, if you try leaf cuttings of colored (laurentii, moonshine, etc) snake plants, the leaves will not propagate true to the leaf cutting's coloring. I think you need the rhizome to keep that DNA in the plant.

I did a bad thing yesterday - I bought more plants! I have been on plant restriction for so long - so yesterday I orders a M. dubia and a M. epipremoides from Ken's Philodendrons in Florida (they have beautiful plants - eye candy really!). Ok - back to plant restriction and back to binge watching your videos!
Claire I watched a video on saving your favourite leaves using PVA glue, which is translucent and she framed it in a box frame and it looked amazing😊
Most of the climbing philodendron we keep as houseplants will do the switch from petiolar sheath leaf growth to cataphilic leaf growth with size and maturity.

my plant interest started about 1 year ago, after I got a propagation of a coleus from a friend. I have always loved plants, but thought it was toooo difficult. My Coleus grew sooo fast, but in a bit ugly form. One day I fell over a instagram post, where a woman showed that you could cut/propagate it, plant it in the same pot and get a nicer looking plant. I tried it, AND I SUCCEEDED!! that little success made me curious, and I got a peace lily and a monstera. This year my plant hobby has really been taken some speed up, and I now have about 40 plants in my apartment, plus a lot outside on my balcony :) we are currently working on buying house, and I can't wait to get more space for bigger and more houseplants :D
1:14:31 I ended up an empty nester in January of 2023. My best friend handed me a propagation of a Pothos. And off went the obsession. Kinda dropped off and now just concentrating on Philodendrons. Which are my favorite ❤

I have found that since i have had beneficial sachets consistently, I have had pests, but never an outbreak. I don't even bother isolating plants anymore.
Those weren't lady birds, they are called asian beatles and are an invasive species. Real ladybirds don't swarm together or try and get inside for winter.
Have to say so much fot all your insight, of plans, ljave been off and on with a bad back for some time, and l know my plants have been, very good ,all the way around, thanks again ,Jan from Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦

I got mad about houseplant’s in lockdown! Fungus gnats are the easiest pest to control. Put a layer of washed playground sand over your substrate/ soil. They can't burrow threw to lay eggs so they die off in bout a week💚🌲

Favorite Hoya is my crimson queen I think Which is probably my smallest and gets the least amount of attention but I think it is in fact my favorite haha
Thanks for this video, it spurred me to tackle a plant that's been misbehaving for a while. It's a newer type of Kalanchoe that just keeps going leggy in spite of getting full sun and refuses to give any hint of a bloom. It even sits next to a traditional flowering Kalanchoe that has consistently flowered since January.
I've given it a major prune, and am propping the cuttings. If that doesn't do anything, nothing will.

Technically I always had like a plant or two, but they always died due to neglect. My aunt works at a garden center and gave me cacti/ succulents etc. for my birthday, the issue is I don't like cacti/ succulents/ Palms and a whole bunch of other plants. So they died, because I didn't care for them.
My collection started in January this year. Aldi had rubber trees for 5€ and I wanted an easy plant for our living room. Then they had an alocasia wentii for 4€ or something like that and it kind of snowballed from there. It also doesn't help that I live very close to a garden center! But yeah, now I have about 70 plants. And I recently saw that the alocasia maccororhiza varigata corm I bought is getting a tiny little growth point at the top, so yeah that's exciting ^^

OMG I think it's so funny that you corrected yourself when asking about the our #1 wish list plant atm bc I am new to the plant hobby and I have 4 plants currently. I burned my first one (Monstera Deliciosa) over the weekend and had to cut all the leaves off so I just have a stem and one new leaf that's currently coming out of the node. Was at Home Depot today and saw an Alocasia Dragon Scale!!! I wanted to get it SOOOO BAD but Im being good and focusing on the ones that I have. I need to get my poor Monstera back in good condition!!

1:14:17 I got my first plant a couple years ago, but really ramped up in the last year. Only have 39 as I’m limited to my bedroom but the collection is definitely still growing 😅

I got into plants when I went to uni. I had lots of fish before I went to uni and I couldn’t take them to uni. I decided to get some plants because I needed something to mother to death 😂

If your verrucosum starts to struggle again, perhaps it might do better in semi-hydro? They seem to be quite thirsty & dramatic in soil, but mines been doing really well in semi-hydro:)

I started my plant journey sometime
Around lockdown I stared with a kalanchoe not sure of the name but it had such pretty yellow flowers i had it through a winter then it spiraled and was totally into the indoor succulents
Haworhia types then I started losing a lot due to overwatering and knowledge of their care I have a few I really like but I have moved on to tropical babies I think between succulents and tropical I have close 40 I too tend to overwhelm myself with things I enjoy that's a libra thing I think😂 . I have really enjoyed this video more would be wonderful❤❤❤
I’ve finally allowed myself to get fake plants! Only the realistic looking ones tho.
I put them in dark corners and/or where my plant-murdering cat can reach them. And surprisingly he leaves the plastic ones alone!
Emma love you videos! Do you think possibly the reason you are having such good results with Pon ( semi hydro) is because you possibly are an underwater er? In my growing conditions and my watering habits, I haven’t found much of a difference. I would love to see you grow 2 props in self watering pots in the 2 different substrates; and see your results.
You should definitely do the plant burnout video.
My homemade go to bug spray is one cup water not too cold....add 1tsp olive or veggy oil, 1 tsp liquid fertilizer and 1 tsp dawn dish soap....shake up in spray bottle....use on mealy bugs, scale, or lightly on the top layer soil if you notice fungus gnats..spray light on soil leave on..... repeat daily lightly on soil until they stop.... for other bugs to spray leaves and stems put plant in sink or shower..spray tops of leaves under sides and stems wait a couple minutes rinse off..inspect everywhere on leaves.do not leave on for more than a few minutes...you may notice plans are greener after rinsed....some can suck in fertilizer in leaves....aluminium foil over soil helps so it wont get too wet....or splash out soil, and plug drain.....watch out for more bugs returning....repeat as needed I have used this for years.....scale will release and slide off when you rub it off......repeat.to keep after them...this mixture fertilizes and the diluted oil gives the leaves a clean shine with the soap most rinses off...let plant leaves dry before putting in sunlight.
I conquered my fungus gnat infestation by: hoovering them up as I saw them with my dyson handheld hoover, and dotting around some carnivorous plants. Highly recommend Drosera capensis to catch gnats, although admittedly they will look pretty gross for a while, what with being covered in all the corpses of dead and dying fungus gnats!

Last year I grew some tomatoes and annual flowers on my little patio for the first time, and one time while getting some supplies for them, I came across a little plant that was labelled as an Epipremnum, and my mom bought it for me. I had no idea what it was (turned out to be a Syngonium Erythrophyllum) and it kind of got me started. I’vw had some houseplants before, but now for a few years, and this time I actually got the urge to actually find out how to care for my new plant as I had done for my tomatoes. Then somebody gave me a cutting from a croton, and things started to get out of hand.
I eventually rotted the syngonium and the croton, but I took cuttings from them and when I was able to pot up the croton again, I had learned enough that it is now thriving in better substrate etc. The syngonium erythrophyllum cuttings are finally (after spending many months in my prop box) rooting and I think I can pot some of them soon!
About a week ago I bought my 14th plant (a diffenbachia) and yesterday I found a thrip larvae from it. Thankfully I still have enough room for a proper quarantine area that I had it in, and now I’m having a new experience with trying not to freak out over pests 😄 I kind of had a freakout last summer with aphids on my tomatoes, and I feel like I am way more zen this time. I decided to just get rid of the diffenbachia though, it was cheap, kind of an impulse buy and I feel like I am not in the mood for pesticides or predatory mites right now, even though I already got nematodes for fungus gnats. Not ready for thrips yet!
If it was my croton, though, I would have done something, there’s no way I would get rid of it without a fight!
(On a side note, Joli and even the mentions of her make me so happy. I think dogs make me happier than plants do, I have a rescue dog myself, had one before and have fostered three. I once had to cage up my plants because one of the foster doggos liked to climb on the plant table and knock them over 🤣. I watched that happen through a security camera while the doggos were practicing being alone and nearly had a heart attack.)
