While weak, I think it did do its purpose. It gave us (somewhat of) an introduction of the characters. (Gretel the hyper and positive younger sibling, Kevin older, more negative, wants more with his life, Hamster. . . the hamster. With superpowers.) It gave the characters superpowers, one of the main aspects of the show.
I hope there's a couple flashback episodes to show how the characters felt and acted before they got superpowers, and I think there's a possibility that the crew might do what they did with Candace in CATU, which was giving a look into Candace's mental health as she was practically ignored while her brothers were everyone's focus. But this time, there would be multiple episodes instead of pushing it into 90 minutes.

I agree with pretty much everything you've said.
There just seems to be a massive disconnect between what's happening in the scene and how it's animated. This scene forms the scene that forms the foundation for the show's premise, but it's animated with a nonchalant tone like it's just a clip of background characters waiting around for the main character to kick off the story. The only way I can see this working right now is if the entire show heavily leans into everyone just being used to insane stuff happening. But MML already did that, and from what I've seen so far, it did it better.
I'm still going to watch it though. After all, it's made by Dan Povernmire, so I'm cautiously optimistic that it'll be good.

I think it would be interesting if Kevin was the main character, and the show being about him having to cope with a superhero sister and her superhero pet hamster. The cold open almost seems to suggest this, as it was mainly focused on him rather than Gretel.

Dan Povenmire 1 minute into his new pilot: ALIENS
You have a lot of great points about this! This show has a lot of potential, but this preview definitely makes me question whether that potential will be reached. We need to see character-driven stories that put the core characters' relationships front and center, to sell us on why we should care about them. Otherwise, the show risks blending in with every other children's superhero show. Also a strong supporting cast, unique music, interesting character designs, really just anything to give the show its own identity will go a long way.

I think the thing that singlehandedly interests me the most about this show is how little we still know about it after like, a year of knowing about it. The sneak peek is basically just an animated elevator pitch -- there's no defined character relationships, no definitive threat, I don't even know what Kevin's going to be doing if he isn't as insanely resentful as I imagine him to be over being snubbed by a hamster. Like ??? who knows...

Anyone think that Kevin(?) and Grettle look like they were done in two different animation styles. While Kevin looks like a PaF character (and MML), Grettle looks almost like a Flash creation. That’s my only real complaint and every time I see them together, I just can’t help but feel like two different ‘people’ were working on the same shot. One group did Kevin while a completely different did Grettle. They both look similar, but the texture is drastically different to me.

It could be. Jeff Swampy Marsh seemed to be less involved in Milo Murphy's Law since he was showrunner for Pete The Cat (a preschool show that came out on Amazon Prime Video in late 2017). He's now currently showrunner for Hey AJ (an upcoming show for Disney Junior), and Dan isn't involved with that either.

I know sometimes first episodes aren't great (except for Milo, that first episode rocked) So I'm hoping maybe the rest of the show will be good, and that it was just an unfortunate first clip to start us on. I really want to root for Dan and his team, as they're all super talented and obviously passionate about it, so it's best to not call the show itself bad until we get some full episodes to actually get a full taste of it. But yikes that first clip did not sell it for me.
it also seems like it might be aimed for a slightly younger audience, so maybe I'm just not close enough to the target demographic to enjoy it as much as I enjoyed Milo Murphy's Law.

Here's my opinion: I think all of us PnF/Milo fans have Alien fatigue. PnF had multiple episode plots with aliens, their latest movie was all about aliens, Milo's season 2 was all aliens, even old PnF movie ideas were about aliens. To me, it makes them feel less special.
I agree the animation and silhouette test aren't anything to write home about, but I'm hoping that was because they're using a lot of their budget (at least for that episode) on some big action scene or a cool fun B plot. Something that really sparks my interest! And side characters, a show is nothing without it's supporting cast. I want to love H&G just like I love PnF and Milo, I'm just worried it won't live up to the hype.

What I didn't think would happen is in The Pilot, I'd get a 2nd Fave Character from that Show: Their cousin, Fred :)

I like Hamster & Gretel; characters, visuals and all. The only glaring complaint I have is that the main overseas animation services for H&G is done by one of the worst overseas animation services: Snipple Animation Studios from The Philippines. I honestly would have settled for Wang Film Productions or Hong Ying Animation, both previously worked on Povenmire's previous show (that I also enjoy) Phineas & Ferb.

I'm just gonna say it, Snipple gets a LOT of undeserved hate.
I rewatched Candace Against the Universe, and honestly the Snipple portion has kinda grown on me on rewatch. And I'm just gonna say it, the thick lineart complaint is not as big a deal as you made it out to be in your past videos.
As for the Hamster and Gretel clip, I do have to say, I do like it a bit more han you did, but I do have my concerns. I don't think Snipple is as bad as you make it out to be when it comes to Dwampyverse stuff like Candace Against the Universe but while it's good, it feels rough.
I actually liked Gretel's design a lot but Kevin is not good at all. You compared him to a background character for Milo Murphy's Law, but me personally, he felt like an early design of Jeremy from Phineas and Ferb.
The CGI is honestly not that big a deal. Honestly, I think it's good and definently WAY better than the CGI in Milo. It deosn't feel like it sticks out whereas in Milo,......well, Hammasaur says otherwise.
But I like the voice acting, I did find the humor in the clip funny and it's very colorful. But I'm not sold on this show yet, but considering that Phineas and Ferb and Milo Murphy's Law allunumni say that they love what they saw, I have a feeling that there's more to Hamster and Gretel that we don't know yet. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

So I've heard about this show for a while, but I wasn't really too keen on watching it until recently. I don't know why, but I kind of gave up the whole shtick of watching kid's shows in recent years, with Milo Murphy's Law being the last one (I still had a few kid's shows that I still kept around for a while after that one but they were on Nickelodeon). But maybe I will watch this just to say I have at least one kid's show around, and because I have been watching the "Daniverse" since its inception (I did take a break from P&F for a few years though). As someone who has watched a bunch of MML coverage since basically the start of this channel, I wanted to see your thoughts on it, and I went into this with an open mind. I think all of your criticisms are valid regarding the first look at the show.
I also agree that Dan and the team are capable of doing great things, however they have kind of been stuck in "Phineas and Ferb Land" for the past 15 years. It seems like that's their real comfort zone. Even after P&F ended, they said that MML was in the same universe and they announced a crossover not even one year into the show's existence. And now we have another show that exists in the same universe. I'm not saying this as criticism, but they seem to use P&F as a crutch for a lot of things. MML Season 1 was so immersive, especially with the Pistachion arc, that you forget that it's a different show from Phineas and Ferb. Season 2 of MML introduced Doof as a side character, which makes me feel like they wanted to play safe with Season 2 by clinging to Phineas and Ferb as much as possible. There's also the fact that Season 2 started with a crossover of the 2 shows, which just backs up my point even further. But after the bad ratings Season 1 got (which wasn't even because of quality but because of choices made by executives), I can't really say I blame them too much. I think it would have been nice if we got a show that takes place in a different universe from the world of P&F, although I understand that it can be a risk.
One thing that does have me hopeful for this show as far as longevity goes is that it's not starting its life on Disney XD like Milo Murphy's Law did. It's starting its life on Disney Channel like Phineas and Ferb did, but it's kind of baffling to me that most of the marketing is going towards live TV when streaming is the way to watch content nowadays. Yes, I am aware that it will be coming to Disney+ soon afterwards, but I thought that maybe it would be a Disney+ original.
With all that being said, I am excited for the show. Maybe I will like it, maybe I won't like it. But I really hope that it does something different to separate itself from Phineas and Milo and doesn't use their existence as a crutch.

I've seen all the episodes so far (sans 8, 9 and 10 since I don't have a TV provider), and they're off to a good start! The humor isn't as strong as in P&F or MML, but the first episode was a real banger, and there's been plenty to love from there on. But even if the humor isn't on point, the story is, I think, even with a "villain of the week" each mini-episode format. The relationship between the various characters adds richness to the show that is all too lacking in too many shows. It's funny, it's heartwarming, and it's fun.

I know this is a dumb thing to be worried about... but I want them to show proper care for the hamster. Because a lot of people think the stereotypical hamster cage is good enough for them, when it's actually animal abuse. Considering how much research and care this team usually does, it wouldn't be a stretch for them to easily outline proper hamster care in a fun an entertaining way or even just NOT explicitly show improper animal care.
Parents are already buying kids hamsters and letting them die way too prematurely out of neglect and poor care, so I don't want kids begging for a hamster from watching this show and thinking it can be kept in a tiny cage like the one shown in the clip.
Hamsters are among the most commonly abused animals and too many pieces of media normalize it rather than simply showing the characters taking proper care of their pets.
Fingers crossed for that cage simply being a travel containter!

No offense but it’s just a show I mean I get where your coming from and all but seriously? Let’s hope people don’t but platypuses and keep them as pets too because a backyard is not a proper habitat for platypus. Who cares what the kids sees on tv it’s the parents that will provide responsible care anyways

    • @Manda_Kat
      @Manda_Kat 2 года назад +1

@@themachine9000 it doesn't matter as a huge thing, but I think it's important, especially when a lot of people are still ignorant and think neglectful care styles are okay. It's okay if you don't care but considering how much work this specific team usually puts into fleshing things out it would be no effort at all for them to show proper basic care for their main characters pet.
The difference between this and Perry is nobody CAN own a platypus unless they're super rich or can somehow go out and catch one. You can get a hamster very cheap at petsmart. It doesn't matter if they show something that is animal abuse if there is no way for the viewers to replicate it, but showing abuse that is not only easily replicatable but seen by many to be perfectly fine (despite having been disproven scientifically) that isn't responsible.
In the end it doesn't matter much, but after the horrors I've seen animals go through over parents who buy their kids a pet just because it showed up on TV, the least they could do is in the same show make it clear to those kids what it actually looks like to show love to this animal.

    • @Manda_Kat
      @Manda_Kat 2 года назад

Idk, it just feels like the less people care about these things, the more I have a responsibility to care. It should at least be mentioned once, if not by the show than by someone talking about it.
Hamsters are brutally abused since they're so small and cheap. I think we need to work past that and media is one of the best ways to do that.

Really not a fan of him casting his daughter as the main character. I’m just tired of people not really respecting voice acting as an art, and just handing out voice acting jobs. Normally you would have to do some smaller roles to land a role as a main character.
I’m not saying she deserves to be bullied by the internet. Far from that. It’s just kind of disappointing to me. But then again, kids aren’t generally very good at voice acting any way, so maybe it wouldn’t have made a difference if they did cast another girl.

    • @BlythePennyBicycle21

Kids can be good voice actors. They just usually have to have some acting roles (no matter what kind or how big they are) before getting a lead role. Case in point, Zach Callison was a preteen when he started voice acting, voicing Billy Batson in DC Showcase: Shazam Vs Black Adam and James for one and a half seasons of Sofia The First. This was all practice before he landed the title role of Steven Universe, where he did really well. Melissa Povenmire probably should've have had some minor roles in other stuff before she started voicing Gretel here.

It's going to be interesting to see how Dan can rebound and react to being a solo act creator now, and I think Hamster and Gretel will help him learn what his strengths and weaknesses are as a writer after being in a Duo with Swampy for so long. They're both good writers, don't get me wrong, but it seems like Dan and Swampy knew the Pitfalls of the other more than anyone else, so they'd help to course correct when one went too far. Hamster and Gretel doesn't have that Luxury, with Swampy not working on it with Dan, so it'll be interesting to see how Dan adapts without him around and whether he grows on his own, finds someone new to keep him grounded like Swampy did on Phineas and Milo, or crumbles under the pressure.
My biggest worry is Dan getting the George Lucas treatment where everyone on the crew looks up to him or doesn't want to upset him to the extent they don't point out his mistakes and then those mistakes make it to air.

As for point two, most new people coming into work at Disney TVA are people who grew up on Dan's work, who probably do look up to him.
