  • Please enjoy my reaction to Geoff Castellucci's cover of I See Fire from the Lord of the Ring's spinoff TV series, The Hobbit! I gotta say.. I don't think I've heard anyone with a vocal range as wide as Geoff! The fact he basically created a four member a capella group with himself is absolutely mind blowing! Geoff is truly one of a kind!
Show some love to the original video!

When people say Geoff has a 5 octave vocal range, they really mean it, and he sounds amazing from top tenor to basement bass. He's a one-man acapella group.
The old miner song "16 Tons" and his cover of Elvis' "Way Down" are others of his set up like this with 4 "Geoffs."

Hi TYLR! Yes, this is a 'reprise' of the characters from his earlier 'Hobbit' track, 'Far Over Misty Mountains Cold', from about a year ago - these are 4 dwarves from the film, Bofur, Killi, Fili and Thorin Oakenshield - same costumes and beards/wigs/hairpieces used for that one, Rick Underwood (who did the makeup) kept them, Eli programmed the lighting changes although he wasn't there for the filming, this was done at Pattycake Studios (co-owned by Layne and Tony Wakim - a former VP member), with Tony and Kathy (Geoff's wife, who acts as Production Manager for Geoff's and VP's videos) helping with the set, etc. While I like Ed Sheeran's original, many have felt that this truly captures the spirit of the film! We hope he completes the 'Hobbit' trilogy with a song from the last film (this is from the second of the 3 Hobbit films)!

Geoff is a national treasure. He's got all that talent and an amazing drive to create phenomenal art, but my favorite thing about Geoff is how he's still down to earth and not at all conceited. You can tell he's not afraid to be goofy and laugh at himself in the BTS videos. He's the total package and that's before you even get the fact that he's incredibly attractive. (And that's coming from a gay woman lol I always joke that I'm gay except for Geoff Castellucci.)

Geoff does layering like this all of the time on his solo channel. It is ridiculous how good he is at it. I do think that you are right, though, that they would suffer if they were on a record label. They do amazing work all on their own because they are so able to be flexible and fluid. Plus, a label would hate that they only have four permanent members with a rotating fifth member. The awesome thing is that they don't _need_ a label. Their beatboxer and one of the former members of the group _actually_ own a production studio of their own, which is what Pattycake Productions is. They give VoicePlay and Geoff the space to do their thing, with all of the resources that come with it. They even do their _own_ videos with other actors and singers, so it isn't like it is _just_ VoicePlay Productions... it operates all on its own, too.
As for Geoff's "natural" singing range, I would say that the one on the far left, who looks the most like "just plain Geoff" is his normal singing range, with the one to the right of him being his upper register, followed by his higher 'normal' register, and then (of course) bassmaster 3000 on the far right.

Geoff has been "cloning" himself since he first started his solo channel during the lockdown. His first video, The Bare Necessities (from the animated movie The Jungle Book) had 5 Geoffs, but they were all just Geoff with different backgrounds. A number of his songs have used that format (Blackbird, House of the Rising Sun, Shenandoah), or sometimes he has the Geoffs dressed differently but casually (Man of Constant Sorrow, Way Down). There are a relatively few where he's gone full musical-theater mode like he did here; the ones that spring to my mind immediately are Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold (the prequel to this song), Ghost Riders In the Sky, Headless Horseman (sort of), Monster Mash.

    • @janetdw

Great explanation. I would just add Rains of Castamere from GOT. I had to look up who each of the characters were because I knew darn well there was a reason they were all dressed that way.
He’s been really stretching lately. I can’t wait to see what he does this October for Halloween. It’s gonna be hard to top Ghost Riders.

I have to assume that this is your first reaction to Geoff as this is a very familiar set up for him. I know of one video he's done entirely alone (High and Dry) and one where he appears alone but has his harmonies in the background (Sound of Silence). Every other time he has multiple personalites. He writes four or five part harmonies, and this way he can cover every part. He also provides the music, either on piano or keyboard with an app for guitar, drum, etc. He is a genius and yes, I think it may well be unique. He does a lovely one with a three man backing group, (Till Then) which is a bit different from the usual too. I honestly think that he should be known by simply "Geoff" by now. I mean, is there another Geoff out there ? By the way, The Hobbit is not a tv show but a trilogy of films. This song , written and sung by Ed Sheeran, was played over the credits of Desolation of Smaug.

  • @robinhatcher8021

He also sings Country Roads by John Denver, using multiple Geoffs. It's really good. But this one and Misty Mountains Cold, the 1st one of this Hobbit Series, are my favorites. Thank you for your reaction. It was fun to see your shock, then joy at realizing there were 4 Geoffs singing in 4 beautiful voices. He's amazing.

Some stats for Geoff's range: A0 (growl), B0 (subharmonic), F#1 (full chest voice), used to be A5 live on stage in Elvira but he upped it a bit to Ab5 in Peaches (one of VoicePlay's recent shorts). Yesterday I heard them doing the Wellerman shanty. So cool. Try some of his solos, because he almost always does at least 4 and sometimes 5 Geoffs. A few to pick amongst: Ghostriders in the Sky, Ain't No Sunshine, Sounds of Silence, Monster Mash, Headless Horseman, 16 Tons, Big Bad John, The House of the Rising Sun and Way Down.

A lot of singers create clones of themselves for their videos (Peter Hollens and Tomi P leap to mind) but few do it with the theatricality that Geoff uses. What I really like about this, that sets it apart even in his catalog, is that each character/range gets to sing lead on camera. Usually there's lead Geoff and backing vocals Geoffs.(Except in Sound of Silence, where we only see one Geoff.) Kathy added a bit to the costumes and weapons but these are the same characters as in Misty Mountains Cold, Geoff's most-watched video. Rick Underwood, who did the makeup and beard wrangling for both, kept the beard pieces so those are the same, too. VoicePlay and Geoff bring in Rick or another majeup artist if they need something elaborate (Hall of the Mountain King or This Is Halloween, for example) but otherwise do it themselves. After dancing and singing in platform shoes and green makeup as Frankenstein's Monster at Universal for ten years, doing his own makeup to look like a human is a cinch.

    Just discovered your channel.
Yup, you opened a big rabbit hole here. Geoff only started doing solo singing videos because of COVID restrictions. There's a couple vids where he sings just a single part himself (or harmonizes with himself but has only one image onscreen at a time), and one (Mele Kalikimaka) where he brings in The American Sirens as backup singers. But almost all of his "solo" vids have four or five Geoffs onscreen.
I think his most beautiful bass vocals ever are in the cover of the Mills Brothers WWII song "Till Then," which he put up around last New Years.
Geoff says he's a natural tenor who trained himself to be a Bass by using Growl, Vocal Fry, and Subharmonics.

They shoot the whole thing four times with Geoff sitting in a different position, singing each separate part each time. It's not actually that hard as long as he doesn't encroach into a "different" Geoff's space when they're all showing at once. If you want the king of self-harmonizing on umpteen tracks, check out Peter Hollins.

Most bass-singers can do higher-range. The difficulty is to make those notes clear, steady and clean. Tim Foust was talking about it at Peter Barber's podcast.
I (Bass-Baritone) actually started my interest in singing, by singing along with rock-music and learning to do the screams with AC/DC, Linkin Park, Audioslave etc. before I realised I can do some pretty good bass.

I think a lot of singers have harmonized with themselves. Off the top of my head Michael Jackson did. I also know Leigh Daniel Avidan (Danny, from Game Grumps and Nina Sex Party) harmonizes with himself. He even shows himself as a quartet doing a cover of The Last Unicorn (very pretty, recommend giving it a listen), though it's nowhere near as beautifully theaterical as Geoff's quartet appearences.
