Geoff recently dropped a short where he sings the first part of this live in his studio, just recorded with his iphone, no post processing at all. if you want to see his studio, he shows his recording studio and the audio treatment he has in the room and also some of the equipment he uses, in the interview he did with the charismatic voice.

Ed Sheeran understood the assignment when he wrote this song, for sure. Professor Tolkein was trying with these books, all 4 of them, to get people who never experienced what the men who went into the trenches of WW I went through. He was trying to tell people WHY the young men who came back were not the same men who left. He didn't do it by trying to explain, for the millionth time, what they all went through over there. Unless you'd been there, seen, smelled, felt what they had you were never going to understand it that way. No, he tried it through a new fairy tale, a new type of mythos people could identify with. The every day man, caught up in something so much bigger than he was, and carried along despite his protests to the contrary.
The chorus in particular. " I see fire inside the mountain. " I see the fire inside the young men, anger toward "the enemy". " I see fire burning the trees. " I see fire ( metaphorically speaking) burning the men around me, withering them to nothing. " I see fire hollowing souls. " I see the shell of young men that are left after the horrors of the battlefield. " Blood in the breeze. " The sight, sound, smell, and taste of blood was pervasive. These books were all about what happens if you take a simple country boy, which he was when he left, and put him in the middle of a desperate situation where death is a very real possibility at every moment, and things that are almost worse than death wait around the corner even closer than that.
People wondered why they were so changed. Why they weren't the same happy young men who left. They were angrier, darker, had courser humor, nights where they couldn't sleep, times when they woke up screaming for "no reason", and bouts of depression that nothing seemed to be able to cure. And no one who wasn't there could understand, which frustrated those same young men all over again, as well as the people who loved them.
Ed Sheeran did more than he knew, I think, when he wrote this song.

Hi guys! This was performed by Ed over the end credits for 'The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug', the 2nd 'part' of the Hobbit trilogy..! I think this version is amazing and fits the theme so well! 😊This was the return of the characters from 'Misty Mountains Cold', using basically the same costumes, and Rick Underwood worked his magic using the same beards and hairpieces as before, and Eli programmed all the lighting changes!

That first note (on the mountain BE-low) is an A flat 0 (On the 88 key keyboard, that is the 5th black key from the left). A few seconds later (KEEP watching over...) he hits an F1. That's the 6th white key from the left end 1 and a half notes lower than the A flat 0. The lowest I've heard from him is B0. On the 88 key keyboard, that is the second white key from the far left. Yes. That low. I've also heard that there ARE some who CAN go a tiny bit lower, but I haven't heard them. Geoff holds the B0 for 15 full seconds in the Valhalla Calling number.

Ed Sheeran's version is played over the credits of Desolation of Smaug, not during the film. Geoff has a room in his house which is a studio, with lots of sound dampening and yes he does get close to the mic for the lowest notes. Geoff said that he'd got the Misty Mountain dwarves to come back for this, and they were all available! to do the filming. :) Same costumes and makeup. It was nice to hear rheir individual voices in this. Misty Mountains is worth seeing too. Very bassy. You make a good point about those drummers. :)

Misty Mountains is still my favorite just because it’s so gorgeous. But this one is so emotional it’s a very close number two. The set is relatively simple but very effective. Something about the way that they’re just quietly sitting there pondering their fates makes this almost visceral.
As much as I love Geoff’s bassy goodness, it’s the tenor and baritone that do it for me in this one. It was such a treat to hear him sing for a fairly long time in such a high a range. You hear it often in the BGV’s’s, but this is the first time I remember hearing him sing for a sustained time as a tenor.
Thorin has the deepest voice and he has the darkest lyrics. Several times when he looks over at his “brothers” his look is so melancholy. It’s as if he knows they’re going into battle and will be fighting for their lives and he’s already in mourning. 🥺

That is indeed the upstairs room in his house where he arranges and records. He usually hosts his chats from there so we’ve asked questions. Like what the blue light is for. (He just put it there because it looks cool.). There’s not as much sound proofing as you would think. At times his young son can be heard playing downstairs.
I hope you intend to react to In The Air Tonight. Layne did a masterful arrangement, and for a change they recorded the video outside, complete with heat, lack of electricity (can we say looong extension cords), a smelly dumpster, bugs and gathering an audience that wanted to participate.

Honestly, I appreciated your somewhat coherent discussion of the brutality of war. Geoff captured all of those emotions, the dread, determination, sorrow and resolve of men who had a choice, but knew what they had to do. There is one moment in Geoff's production, at 1:51 where he stops, seems to swallow, and then goes on. I've seen that when a singer is overcome with emotion and has to go one without breaking down. There was no reason for him to put that in his cover, it is not a musical effect. It does evoke those feelings. It was just masterful!
    Great reaction guys!

The drummer (bugle, etc.) had to be available to sound retreat or other orders. What I love about this cover of the song the most is that it really captures the... feeling of the eye of a storm. Like... in the context of the story, and where it is... it takes place between the battle with Smaug and the battle of the five armies. It is one where they've just barely survived one major fight, and have another one closing in on them fast... and Geoff 100% captures that mood.

The drummers, etc on the battle field in old times were actually crucial to the battles. They relayed commends to the troops and made sure that they reloaded and fired together. Their presence allowed men to fight as a unit, even when they couldn't see each other through the haze of the battlefield.

My face was HURTING for laughing too much, during the whole talking section after the end of the song 😂😅. You guys are great, and I love your ways of reacting to this stuff... 🙂
About the situation the Dwarves are. I didn't watch the movies, for I read the BOOK, and after the massacre of The Lord of the Rings I couldn't even stand the idea of watching "The Hobbit". But the situation of the guys is pretty much the one you described, with the difference that the "fire" they see is the flaming breathe of a fucking DRAGON, who's VERY angry at them and is going after them and whoever else may have helped them, and he's practically invulnerable but for HALF of a scale missing, and is capable of burning down an entire TOWN in a single breathe or so. 🙄
So they are there, knowing it's most likely their last night on Earth, and they take responsibility, that is going to happen because of them, and anyway they know that THAT is what HAS TO BE DONE, whatever the price they'll have to pay for it. So they share the last glass of wine, and they vow to burn and die together, and there's this incurably touching sense of brotherhood and friendship and loyalty and responsibility... It touches me to tears EVERY TIME.
Thank you for your reaction and the nice good informations about the process of recording such stuff, and all the other infos. And of course, thank you for the many laughs. BTW, my mind works pretty much the same way quite often 😅😅.
BTW... Ed Sheeran sings it during the end titles of "The Desolation of Smaug", as far as I read. 🙂

nope those drummers were usually the kids 9-12 that had run away to join up couldn't let them but you let them drum or play the (it's a fife *wink to Matt) or carry the colors of the unit or the country flag. Most were ordered off the field and were stretcher bearers after the battle Drums and Fifes were a language that could issue battle orders as well as the bugle players that could be heard above the din of battle. So, I'm not a soldier, so I can't really relate, but I think I would take a medieval battle before a modern war. At least back then you'd know when and where it was going down. You'd prepare and march for days, or even weeks to the battleground and the night before sit around the campfire knowing tomorrow is the day, maybe tonight if the other side launches a surprise early attack and then you woud stand there and face the opponents head on. True, terrifying to think about but compared to the psychological horrors of modern combat, when you will be sent into a warzone, not even knowing if you even arrive there alive, because your convoy can be hit at anytime from out of nowhere. Nowadays there is no clear frontline. The enemy can strike from everywhere at any time wihout you even knowing they're coming for you. You dont know if they know your position and could at any second artillery strike you into oblivion or drop grenades from drones or missile strike you. There could be mines anywhere you step. It is just constant 24/7 horror. So, yeah gimme that sword and let's go

90% of the bass singing he is doing here, though, is done chest voice, so there is no specialized techniques for that (it's just his natural voice). Geoff is good to about A1 acoustically in chest voice (same note as the open A string on a 4-string bass guitar). Which even A1 is 7 semitones lower than what an average bass can project (an E2; the open E string on a 6-string guitar).

Geoff is great, and this is an excellent arrangement of this song, I do prefer Peter Hollens version though.
