- As Interceptor 004 arrived ready to be installed to Santo Domingo, COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic and had reached the Dominican Republic. While the entire world was shutting down, we too had to put our field work on hold. Subscribe to our RUclips channel: bit.ly/371k8sN
Since its design and construction in 2019, Interceptor 004 has been on quite the journey. We have documented every step - from its build to transport, and will continue to do so to the day that it extracts waste from one of the dirtiest rivers in the world. Interceptor 004 has a story of its own and you can follow it in this special Interceptor 004 series.
With behind-the-scenes footage and exclusive interviews with the teams persevering for its success, you will witness why the Interceptor is crucial to The Ocean Cleanup's mission to rid the world's oceans of plastic.

Thank you for making the journey of your developments so accessible to follow for outsiders! These “mini-documentaries” have been fascinating to watch.
I guess the project is back on its feet by now, quarentine measures has ended in the D.R.. I'm so glad you have been able to make it here and plan on cleaning our dirtiest river located in the Capital. I really admire you guys for doing the job nobody wants to (It's really important!), + making our island more beautiful. Love from the D.R. 💯
I wish I was there to give you a hand.
All of this is so amazing!
I wish I could help in something else besides putting garbage in its place. I can't wait to see an interceptor in the river of Guayaquil, Ecuador
That area of Ecuador is indeed on our map of top 1000 most-polluted rivers that we aim to help tackler. You can see it here: theoceancleanup.com/sources/
@@theoceancleanup Yo u guys are awesome!
You all had my support since the very beginning and will still have it. Blessings🙌
The suspense is killing me😭 can’t wait to see an interceptor in the Mississippi River at some point!
They have a map of all the rivers in the world and their trash output. Oddly, it doesn't look like the Mississippi is properly estimated. It's showing 3,500 kg per year while the Deleware river is showing 149,000.
@@drooplug you sure that isn't in tonnes of mton instead of kg. 1 mton = 1000kg
start with about 40 streatched across the mississippi delta, and head up stream, youll be busy for years just picking up the mouth of the river
@@swongstandard8011 I am fairly certain. I don't think they are showing the correct data. The delta might be messing it up.
Just Doin Florida it is sad to see coronavirus has one and defeated this last chance people had to save the oceans. But we must accept that and accept out fate.
I'm so inspired every time I watch these videos. It really makes me believe there is hope for the world and all the human's plants and animals that live on it. Honestly, it makes me feel better about life knowing my small donation each month is making such a difference. keep up your amazing work even though the world has turned upside down. I know you will come out on top and triumph.
Your work is more important now than ever...Thank you for giving me hope during these strange times!!
Just inspiration guys. In difficult times like these, this is a revelation.
17 people who put a thumbs down you are part of this problem!!! We all play a part in this clonal plastic crisis!!! Theses people are working hard to clean up this awful mess good job x
Tolles Projekt. Bin gespannt auf weitere Interceptors! Ich möchte gerne ein paar Zeitraffer sehen von dem treibenden Plastikmüll, der dann aifgesammelt wird...
It would be super cool if the interceptors are outfitted with a bunch of sensors. I'd imagine you could capture all sorts of useful data. Maybe add a network of buoys so you can map an area of the river while capturing data like flow rates, riverbed contours, and grouping patterns. I'd imagine that you could create a model based off the data collected and could adapt it to different rivers. I am confident that with enough data, machine learning can optimize most anything.
It’s so sad to see the set back due to COVID-19 :( hope that things get going again ASAP!
Thank you for your work on this project. A bright light in challenging times.
It’s heartbreaking seeing such a beautiful country being so polluted with trash. I honestly didn’t expect to see that much trash in almost every shot in this video.
Im from Dominican Republic 🇩🇴, where interceptor 004 is going! Thank you!
Hoping the best for your teams deployment!! COVID19 sucks for all of us, but Live to battle plastic another day!
Thank you - the battle against plastic pollution must still go on (just from home for now)!
Thank you and good luck!
I hope every government in the whole world and charities, investors get notified of this. This guy is amazing and deserves all the investment needed to help this necessary mission.
Keep up the excellent work you guys. We need you to start pumping those Interceptors out!
Let’s hope this is over soon. This beautiful Island deserves this!
They have talking for ten years....it is about time ....need 900 more of these asap
Congratulations to the entire team on splendid work on this project.
I have a suggestion, "Automated SORTING Mechanism"
you can implement automated sorting using robotic arms or some other mechanism that will separate the organic matter from plastics. I believe some systems exists out there that can do this tedious and difficult task using high speed cameras, robotic arms, air guns that literally blow the lighter plastic material off the conveyor into a secondary collection unit.
I emphasize sorting because, it appears there is just too much garbage in most rivers and you would probably end up collecting too much organic material which would end up decomposing in the open anyways. I know that will be the case when you use this system in most of South East Asian rivers and Indian rivers.
Could you take a look at the Yamuna river next ? An interceptor will be of paramount value.
I have been following your journey for almost a year and your environmentally friendly vision and your dedication, creativity and innovations are so admiring.
The Ocean Cleanup seems like a dream job for environmental friendly scientists, engineers and researches worldwide. Do you have any office in Canada?
Thank you for your continuous support! We do not have an office located in Canada, however, do feel free to take a look at our careers page for all open opportunities: theoceancleanup.com/careers/
Hello guys amazing work, Im big fan of you channel, much respect and love from San Francisco of Macoris Dominican Republic
Those interceptors look like high tech expensive cars/spaceships but much more useful!!!
Commenting for the algorythm. Let's go guys!
The lockdown timing wasn't great, was it? But you have an amazing team, and I know you'll continue to shine. Thank you for everything you do!
You guys are doing great, My idea years ago was to get an aircraft carrier (old) repurposed for 60 or 70 vessels equiped with booms streached out in a 200 mle span, House about 1500 people and go to work. Vesseles of aprox 70' 4 persons to crew each, Aircraft carrier has the deck space needed for long term deployment, more on that but who cares (GET UR DONE)
Great organization 🙏
This is my hood La Cienaga, Santo Domingo, Republica Dominicana.
This is just amazing, I really like what are you doing
6:14 "people are saying this may be around for another 8 weeks or so".. Ha.. HAHAHA.. HAHAHA.. If I didn't laugh, I would cry.
We need these in Bali. Horrible to see the rubbish flooding the beaches coming from the rivers.
O.k. We understand the delay, but what happend to the interceptor for Vietnam?
We are awaiting final paperwork on our Vietnam Interceptor. We will be sure to share more information once we have it!
The Ocean Cleanup Thank you. Good luck.
The Ocean Cleanup Any updates on the one in Thailand? Thanks!
Thailand is still in the pipeline - though manufacturing and deployments have been delayed due to COVID-19. We'll be sure to share more information as we progress!
The Ocean Cleanup Thanks so much! From Thailand ❤️
You are keeping us all on tenterhooks!
Incrível o Brasil também deveria entrar nessa
mucht respect !
@The Ocean Cleanup Do you have data on where the plastic waste ORIGINATES? For example, Is the plastic waste created in the USA, then shipped elsewhere, where it is dumped in the rivers? How can the small east Pacific islands have so much waste compared to the large USA?
First off thank you for your efforts in cleaning up our oceans, rivers, and our world.
Do you plan on doing India as well in the foreseeable future?
Our goal is to tackle the 1000 highest-polluting rivers worldwide. If you take a look at our Sources map (theoceancleanup.com/sources), you will find that some of these rivers are indeed located in India - be sure to stay tuned!
heroes!
I quess my question is why is it taking so long for 004 and are there more being built / ordered ?
The deployment has been paused due to COVID-19. The health and safety of our team and the local operators is a priority of ours, thus operations will re-commence when it is safe for our team to do so. As for additional Interceptors, we have deployments planned for Vietnam, Thailand, Los Angeles and Jamaica!
Clean it boyz
❤️
With the Interceptor design finalized, would you outsource the manufacturing of interceptor to the deportment area to reduce its carbon footprint?
Are you planing to install one in Brazil, like Rio or São Paulo, maybe? Keep safe, great work! Congrats
Good question! Our goal is to tackle the 1000 most polluting rivers worldwide. Some of these rivers are indeed located in Brazil - see our interactive river sources map here: theoceancleanup.com/sources
004 is gonna be busy.
That right
Any plans on Interceptor for Chao Praya River in Thailand?
We do have plans for an Interceptor in Thailand. We will share more information regarding location and timing as the deployment moved forward.
@The ocean cleanup
The pontoons are not made of plastic. We did not want to include plastic parts in the water due to micro plastics. The Interceptor is made of marine quality steel, stainless steel and aluminum, and is equipped with an off-grid power generator, remote monitoring dashboard, automated extraction control, 4G data uplink, and more. The waste collection capacity is 50 cubic meters. Learn more here: theoceancleanup.com/rivers.
This system is now on hold during pandemic?
Hi guys! Just one quick question: how do you make sure that the Interceptor is not going to be stripped for parts?
While responsibility for security is up to the individual owner/operators, to date there has not been a single issue of theft, vandalism, or destruction on any of the Interceptors.
@@theoceancleanup Cool! Thanks for answering!

March 2020: "People are saying, that this may be around for another 8 weeks or so".
We all wish.
Im assuming suspended due to the pandemic but that’s temporary
This is an exciting project. I wonder if one day the companies that use plastic packaging for their products could be required to fund these types of projects somehow? Maybe even a tax on the actual product that funds them also. Idk. Just brainstorming....
That's a tax i would happily pay, even if they raised the product price. If the tax is too high I simply wouldn't buy the product, (which would also keep some of the product's plastic out of the ocean).
You have done the really greatest invention of recent times. When are you coming to India? We have some of the world's most polluted rivers.
Thank you for your support! Some of the 1000 highest-polluting rivers in which we aim to tackle are located in India. Take a look at our interactive river sources map here and be sure to stay tuned: theoceancleanup.com/sources
Great job guys. Why not write more on the sides of the interceptor about what it does and why people should not drop litter. Or something rather than just a name. Just a thought, I’m sure it’s not the first
Do you think you guys will get to the point where you can easily make tons and tons of interceptors with no problem?
This is what we are aiming for as we scale up our manufacturing! Our goal is to help tackle the 1000 highest-polluting rivers worldwide, with the aid of the Interceptor.
Would be awesome to Put live cameras connected to twitch or some stream service, so everyone could see the interceptor at work and u could also get a lot of donations
While we do not currently have the infrastructure to do so, we are looking at ways we can best show the Interceptor in action - stay tuned!
“They don’t even know it is a problem probably”
look at the picture, 004 is suspended over the water about to be put in hence the title of this video
Oh wait are you working in Dominican R?
If they had respiratory masks, then they would deliver the project on time.
great production a/v .. waiting to see actual vid of boom in action
Hi, i liked your comment.
🙏🇧🇷😔😔🙌
Until plastics are allowed to be burned as fuel for power generation there will always a problem with discarded plastics. Or put it in land fills and pollute the ground water. Choose the better option. Figure out how to burn plastics without sorting with minimum pollution. It can be done.
Top 8 Most Polluted Rivers in the World in 2020:
Ganges River, India.
Citarum River, Indonesia.
Yellow River, China.
Sarno River, Italy.
Buringanga River, Bangladesh.
Marilao River, The Philippines.
Mississippi River, USA.
Jordan River, Jordan.
With this in mind, are these the rivers you guys are planning on to place the new Interceptors? Would really appreciate an answer🙌 Anyways, best of luck in the future✌️😁
Our aim is to tackle the 1000 highest-polluting rivers with the help of the Interceptor in five years’ time from launch. Check out our interactive river sources map, to find where these rivers are located: theoceancleanup.com/sources
The Ocean Cleanup thank you for the map! Looks like you guys have a great understaning of where the problematic areas are👀
HI, I have been following your channel for the past year. , I would like to know if you have tried to contact the govt of India in any way?
t's great to hear that you have been following our channel! While we cannot specifically say whether we have been in contact with the Indian government, there are rivers in India that we are certainly aiming to tackle. You can find an overview of these rivers here: theoceancleanup.com/sources/
hey i want live streaming on these bosts please @Theoceancleanup
While we do not currently have the infrastructure to do so, we are looking at ways we can best show the Interceptor in action!
If it is not done now with the " Bummer of corona virus " I do not see a better Time
My money is still on 4ocean😎
If we could for just one year pay the fishery for collecting plastic with their helping fleet and pay them for the plastic they collect and not for the fishes , the sea life would get better in one year we would have more fishes in the sea and the fishery would not lose their boats ??

This title doesn't sound good... anyway let's see what's the story about, in 5 days we'll know
Or maybe it's simply like the picture and it's suspended above the water? Fingers crossed
its called clickbait ;)
日本人ですが、このプロジェクトに加わりたいです
Thank you for your enthusiasm! Feel free to take a look at our career page for all open opportunities: theoceancleanup.com/careers/ , however please note that most of our open opportunities are located in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, as this is where our Head Quarters are located.
Listen there is nothing wrong with a bit of plastic in the ocean
this pandemic began and this pandemic will End !
Hoi
Very poor planning. The site should have been prepared weeks ago. Now the interceptor will be sitting unused for weeks or months.
hey what is this
It's our mini-series about the Interceptor! The Interceptor is our solution for river plastic waste. It is the world’s first scalable option to intercept river debris before it enters the ocean. To learn more, check out: theoceancleanup.com/rivers.
The Ocean Cleanup cool where can i learn more?
Boo! The Earth doesn't have time to put this project on hold
Michael Inocente So ....what can you do about it?
You can't clean the ocean because of rona. Absurd.
The spicy relation pertinently stamp because bay sequentially squeeze towards a nine alarm. foolish, hard-to-find baritone
Instead of building more and more interceptors, why don't you try to EDUCATE the locals to clean up their surroundings? In the video, I see a pig sty. The plastics / litter would never reach the rivers or the ocean.
If the local governments doesn't want invest in education for their people at least we'll have interceptor working.
I have the same opinion as you. Clean up all the world's governments and free schools for everyone in the world. Free feminine hygiene products to women and free condoms.
We recognize that the Interceptor is not the only solution, but part of the many initiatives necessary, including education, to tackle plastic pollution. Our focus is on what we do best - developing technology. Moreover, we initiate local partnerships for deployment which always include the aim of ensuring that no waste will return to the environment, whether facilitated through education or improved waste management processes.
@@theoceancleanup Thanks for the reply. Good luck with educating the locals to clean up their own mess.
