My favorite memory of this game is when my sister (during a weird phase where she was into NASCAR) asked if she could try playing it. I told her yes and handed her my Game Boy Advance....Several minutes of strenuous grunting later, I hear her breathe a sigh of relief. I asked how she did, and she shoved the Gameboy towards my face, triumphantly shouting "Eighth place! Oh yeahhhh!" and I had to inform her that this wasn't NASCAR and there were only eight carts on the track...which meant she was, in fact, in last place.

Super Circuit's "problem" is that it's arguably the closest that Mario Kart gets to realistic racing physics. Like, I love it for that, you have to do stuff like, not keep your finger permanently jammed on the gas button, and decide whether or not it's best to drive safely around a corner or cut it with a slide. But yeah, someone who's used to the other Mario Karts will definitely find it difficult to get into.
The thing I had a problem with was the way the game grades you on cups, it is insanely strict.

I got good at this a while back. If I recall, I used either Toad, Luigi, or Yoshi, and I would rapidly tap the gas on turns to temper the sliding without hard-breaking, just like I did with the Super Nintendo one. My uncle taught me that trick. :)

  • @guerillagrueplays6301
    @guerillagrueplays6301 Год назад +2

Y-eah, I honestly like this MK, but it's definitely a challenging one. It's more or less a direct sequel to the original SNES Super Mario Kart in the way the physics work (whereas every other game in the series builds on MK64's.) Because of that, yeah, it's a challenge to get used to how it plays, and even at 100 CC you'll wind up needing to brake around a lot of corners to get good lines.
Two fun tips if you play more or anyone else plays:
    1. More coins, higher speed. Just like MK7/8.
    2. You can unlock the entire SMK track list in the game (it's the first MK game to include retro tracks.) You have to beat a cup, then beat it again with at least an A rank and 100 collected coins, and you'll unlock an additional cup made of the SNES courses. They're not broken up quite like they were on SNES, but they ARE all there.
There are honestly some really neat course designs in this game, that have translated up nicely into later games (especially MK8's variations on Cheese Land, Ribbon Road, and Jungle Park.)
I've been playing the HECK out of this since they released it on NSO. Yeah, it's kinda BS hard (and can get cheat-y,) but once you wrap your head around the physics, it's a very fun MK.

I like this game.. and the reason is simple... While the controllers are funky... there is a lot of shortcuts and tech in this game that I like.
ALSO MY FAVORITE MECHANIC IS HOW RED SHELLS FUNCTION HERE! Cause when you "Shoot em backwards" You don't shoot em backwards.. you lay them down and then they home in on the next racer who passes it.

As a kid, for a time, I only had a GBA as a console. This was one of the games I had, and it was my only experience with Mario Kart till I got a Wii as a teen, we didn't have consoles before that. This game was a lot of fun as a kid, and I remember having so much fun with it and playing it all the time. I thought I was so good at it because I was having so much fun. I replayed it recently, on the GBA Player with the GameCube, a few months before the recent Nintendo GBA on Switch announcement...and holy crap I could not play this game. The controls felt simultaneously too sensitive and unresponsive some how. It wasn't anywhere near as good as I remember XD Nostalgia (and the childhood inability to care if I'm good or bad at a game) is a hell of a drug. Music's still banging though, though I'm glad these courses are now in a better controlling Mario Kart with 8.

I was quite good at this one. You don’t really hold to hard drift much. You tap the drift to bounce a bunch to adeptly change directions while keeping your speed up.
It lets you move the camera faster than turning so you don’t feel blind and won’t slip around.

  • @adambyte256
    @adambyte256 Год назад

This was the first video game I ever owned. I played the hell out of it back in the day and again pretty recently. [cracks knuckles]
-The "speed" stat displayed for the characters is actually acceleration. As is typical of Mario Kart, acceleration is generally inversely correlated with top speed.
-Yes this game is ridiculously slippery and therefore ridiculously hard. You deal with it by learning the tracks and planning each maneuver WAY ahead of time. You can get used to it, but the requirement of planning further ahead makes it objectively harder, not just less intuitive. Lighter characters are generally less slippery, but their low top speeds are crippling on 150cc. I recommend Luigi. There's way less slippage while you're using a star. You're supposed to drift almost always and brake almost never.
-The timing for the start-of-race boost is to push and hold the gas, starting halfway between the second and third Lakitu lights/noises (where the third is the green/start). You can also get a boost when Lakitu places you back onto the track after falling off; the timing here seems to be the same amount of time before you gain control as it is at the start of the race, which makes it really hard to time because Lakitu's movement is very jerky so it's hard to predict when you'll gain control. You can use the sound of your kart motor as a cue: the longer you hold down the gas, the higher-pitched your motor's whine becomes. You want it to hit the same pitch just as you're gaining control of your kart, whether it's at the start of the race or after being rescued.
-To get a drift boost a.k.a. mini turbo, you have to do enough drifting within a short enough timespan (it can be split across separate turns), and then you'll get the boost about 1 to 2 seconds after you stop drifting. It's also surprisingly easy to destroy your invisible progress towards a boost at any time before it actually triggers: I think either hitting the brake or going off-road-no matter how briefly-will do it. Also beware that you can get a slow-motion spin-out by doing a big turn in one direction and then immediately turning in the other direction; it doesn't matter whether either of these turns is drifted or not.
-I don't think coins make you faster like they do in MK8. In case you missed it, their function within a race is that if you collide with another racer while you have 0 coins, you'll wipe out, like if they were using a star. Colliding with another racer normally loses you 1 coin, and getting hit by something and wiping out out loses you 4 coins. Coins' other two functions are derived from the sum of the numbers of coins with which you finish each race in a cup. (This is shown on the cup results/awards screen.) First, if you win a cup while this total is at least 100, and you had already previously won that cup, then you unlock an "extra" cup consisting of SNES tracks. (This process is tracked separately for each engine class, a.k.a. cc rating.) Second, this total contributes to your letter "rank" on the cup results/awards screen.
-You've experienced how you can briefly drive in deep water before Lakitu picks you up, but what you might not know is that you can also briefly drive ON TOP of deep water before you fall into it. The amount of time before you drop is higher the faster you're going, so it sometimes makes sense to cut corners a little, especially on higher cc's and/or with a mushroom. You did this once by mistake with a star.
-Ribbon Road is almost completely unrecognizable in MK8 compared to here; it's by far the most-changed retro track I've ever seen in Mario Kart. Second place goes to Cheese Land, also in MK8 and originally from this one.

I played this game back when it came out and found the controls ok. My frustration was due to trying to unlock the SNES tracks in 150cc and constantly failing the coin count requirement due to being blasted by red shells and lightning by the computer because I was usually in first. Overall I don't really enjoy any Mario Kart because the game punishes you for playing good by giving last place the best items and first place the worst items. The turning is so HARD that the player instantly turns in that direction as opposed to doing it at a smooth mid level that it leads to driving on grass or even crashing at walls. It's like nobody programmed this game and it's even more amazing at how HIGH the critic score is of this game, as if nobody noticed the super turning in the game.
Edit: okay i watched it the video a bit more and it turns out it's not so much turning but "drifting" that is a major source of the game's issue with driving. Still doesn't change how poorly designed it is.

How did they screw up the background scrolling so bad? If you can see an island in the distance and turn around 180 degrees, you shouldn't be able to see that same island.

Did I ever get good? I must have.. I beat all the cups, on all three ccs, in first place, after playing for a few months, on and off. Metroid Fusion kept pulling me away.
Did I ever feel good at it? Hell no. Just.. Hell no.
Edit: Also, the courses are "Sho sort"? Aw buddy... that was adorable. *pats back*

This was the first Mario Kart game I ever played. I never touched the jump button. You could make every turn with just... turning.

You should play the SNES one, I’d love to see if it’s even possible to place higher than last on donut planes 3

I played the shit out of this game back in the day, but anything above 50cc is ridiculous. And yes, the drifting is pretty awful so it's better to just not.

This is the only Mario Kart game I outright despise. While I can reasonably re-learn the controls to the SNES game, this one's are way too terrible to get a hold of. I much, much prefer the remade courses in 8 and Tour.
EDIT: The courses are so short likely because the game includes every track from the SNES game as well.

Yeah, I wound up becoming an “expert” in this game as a kid due to not having anything else with Mario Kart. To the point where I was trying to complete the rainbow road by just bouncing from place to place off the bumpers.
It takes time to get used to, and does not control like ANY other kart game.

I played this as a kid and got first place starts in every track on 50ccs and 100ccs. Never 150. I managed 2nd place in every map on 150ccs. Still irks me to this day.
If there was one thing I do remember, is that I never once drift boosted the entire game.

this and mario kart 64 were my favorites. one way to not go off track while turning is to let off the gas button. if you keep it pressed the whole time it's way harder.

If I think of a popular game I didn't vibe with from long ago and want to give it a chance, then I actually give it a chance. Play some Quick Races on 50cc, switch up your character so you can find a driver that works for you, explore the various courses and modes. Take some time to get the feel for the game before you write it off as bad.
I don't like when Jared has a weird axe to grind while playing a game. It can come off as "I need to do this for content/views," and I don't want to think he's that cynical because I respect him.

Fun story about this game, back when the GBA was in production, I remember I ask my grandpa, to bring me a copy of that game, and when I recieve it on mail, I got E.T. the video game instead, and boy, I hate that game, maybe not worse than that embarrassing Atari game.

When I got my gba it was this, super Mario world and street fighter 2 that I played constantly.
I love super circuit because of the difficult learning curve, it’s slippery & the computers were kind of unfair, but once you master the controls you’ll be the drift king!

I played a ton of this, definitely takes some practice and I remember it being infuriating due to the rubber banding, can't get too far in first place without the CPU blasting you with items or speeding up somehow.
Other MK games probably had worse rubber banding, but somehow I remember this one being very frustrating, must be due to controls too.

this game were made with a small screen in mind, so i think when jared played it first when he was a child, it was super annoying because how hard it is to see and react on such a small scale of resolution, so it felt "harder" back then.
