First tool song i ever heard as a freshman in 1993. A friend said you have to listen to this. Popped it in my sony portable cd player and was instantly hooked. The rest is history
When I read this, I thought "There's no way this is thirty years old. Damn people and their internet exaggerations." Then I thought, "Wait, when did Undertow come out? Ohh no..." We really are getting old, aren't we? But at least we got to listen to some incredible music during our many years on this planet.
I wished i had discovered Tool earlier in life so there would have been no need to do drugs and alcohol like i did....quit smack 20 years ago, kicked booze habit 6 years ago, life is still shitty but a lot more bearable with their music...i am in my 50's now and they make me headbang and play air guitar like i was 16 again...thank you,Tool
I kinda attribute Tool to my opiod habit cause i discovered both about the same time.. I kinda feel like the majority of Tool fans are 2 things and thats musicians & Drug addicts.. I dont mean that in a bad way..
One more thing...I kicked heroin with nothing...it was pure hell , after a week I was losing my mind . My only escape from my own torment was tool with headphones it truly got me through it. Tool thank you guys you are all amazing
As a 46 year old listening to this new album at the time was something so eerie...the sound, mood, down tuned guitars, non traditional metal voice...it was THE MISSING LINK in heavy music...I could go into heavier details about just how much TooL affected me as a teen in the 90s but it's a moment in time that just indescribable. You had to be there in there in 90s..it was and is the very BEST in heavy music . Sometimes I can smell it in the fall air, it's unmistakable.
I was probably 9 or 10 when I first heard Tool in '92 or so. I've been hooked since. Wild to listen to a 30 year old song that could be put out today and be on top of the charts. It's timeless for those who appreciate quality
I always felt Maynards voice was different and couldn't quite figure out why even though its not right out in front like most bands or as traditional.....I came to the conclusion that it felt like a spiritual entity singing ...not a human ...but our inner soul inside us....he could be as soft and tender like an new innocent soul or as angry and destructive as an evil revengfull demon within us...no one I've ever heard can blend both while perfectly meshing with music that can sound like its from the pits of hell or as trippy and spiritual from a blissfull dimension
Actually, now that you brought up this angle... Tool digs deeper than Black Sabbath to find a deeper, down tuned guitar sound, here. This album when listened all the way through would make a Tool fan instantly on the strength of this track. I especially like the recorder being played to an indian tribal beat or something in the very beginning.
Undertow went 3× platinum recently...lateralus as well .10,000 days hit double platinum. Fear inoculum hit gold. Anima is 4× platinum...OPIATE is till just shy of double platinum!!
I remember buying this album in 1993.... Blows my mind its almost 30 years old and still is as amazing as the first day..the best part is I can now sing along, unlike the first day!! haha
I still listen to this multiple times a week I’ve I’m 42 obviously I was listening to these guys back then being I felt this type of music affected me the most
My favorite Tool song - the first song of theirs I learned to play on my guitar when I picked it up to learn during Covid at age 57. Thanks to Amplitube I have Adam’s sound closely duplicated. So thrilling to play along with Danny, Paul and Maynard (sorry Adam, I mute your track when I play) freaking dream come to life. I would sh*t my pants to actually play with Danny live; for my money the best metal drummer bar none! Thank you so much for all the inspiration over the decades boys!
Am I the only person that thinks "Crawl Away" is in the top 3 Tool songs? Its friggin awesome instrumelltely and vocally. All Tool songs are, but I feel this one doesn't get enough respect. Thoughts?
The biggest problem is it's like they wanna hide this song. They have played it live 49 total times and all of those times were in the 90's. Even Undertow (the song) is underplayed live by far compared to any other Album title track.
Top3? ...maybe not so much... But I do think one thing is different from every other Tool song... Every other song pretty much follows Danny, but Paul is in pure attack-mode. As much as I love Justin and feel it was a change for the better, Paul had /this/...and I don't know that Justin does. This was a different, unproven Tool
Why is this one of the least played songs live all time by Tool? This beats so many of the songs they regularly play live by a lot. One of their best tracks. This song and Eulogy- hugely underrated.

Sober was the song that really changed the game for them. What's funny is that it's really just a mid level track from them. All their songs are at a minimum good, but I would choose listening to probably like 80% of their other songs over listening to Sober.

Most under rated Tool song. The bass and drums are in perfect harmony. And Maynard's voice along with Adam's riffs are perfect as well.
