- Due to popular demand I decided to throw this video up at the front of the queue. The search and destroy has been a season stand out and quickly has become my go do "searching pattern". With a flash back, a tag, and a cdc collar you're covering all your bases. Thank you do everyone who asked about this fly and commenting "guy fieri" in the last videos comment section. I hope you have as much success with this pattern as I have.
In this video I am tying on a size #16 Fulling Mill Jig Short matched with a 2.8mm bead. As always happy to answer any questions in the comments below. Thank you again for your continued support.

That's a good looking fly. Funny how fish can be so choosy and one tiny thing makes a difference.
Have a small lake at my cabin where I pretend I'm a great fisherman. One day I was throwing a royal wolf and a royal coachman. They look almost identical except for the wing material. One of them caught a fish almost every cast and the other one hardly got a look. Sorry but all you guys will have to try both.🤗
Always informative, humerous, and educational. Love your work!!!
Very detailed. Just what I was looking for! Keep em coming.
Love the tying tutorials. Keep em coming!
Very helpful video on tying. Great looking bug.
Thanks James! Been waiting for this since the last vid!
Love this fly. Definitely not a quick one but super enjoyable to tie. Thanks!
I love CDC collars. Thanks for another good one. You know a lot of languages.
Dang, I was close! Thanks for the detailed vid! Preciate you bro
Great video - thank you. I will be tossing one this weekend as it looks like a winner. I forecast at least a level 178 of awesomeness with the Opal Flash, Shade 5 tag, CDC, and squirrel combination. I chuckled when you said to guard these and resist handing them out; my buddies are thieving fly box raiders so I may have to hide these as they pilfered my Mid Tag flies last trip. Keep the fly tying videos coming - the detail of your step by step process is appreciated.
Another good video, thanks James.
Great pattern and video, thanks for sharing
Gonna try a few of these this weekend. Thanks for sharing.
Let me know how it goes !
You as and you shall receive ! Thanks for the S and D tutorial !
Gotta give the people what they want .
I was just using a very similar fly this weekend. Very effective.
This fly really does have everything!
I'm just here for the Corey Tohme comments.
The best part of posting any video imo
@@AboutTrout Glad I can help. I'll keep 'em coming.

Excellent tutorial....I'm a beginner but this is how I learn. As my tying skills develop I will attempt this pattern. Thanks for sharing with those of us who appreciate others' contributions.
Thanks for watching . I’ve got some fun stuff in the works aimed at new tiers.
Awesome! Thanks. I take it this pattern works well on the San Juan. I live in Farmington and can't wait to try this on the river.
👋 I'm up near Durango. I'd bet this one will fish well on the Animas.
Thank you so much! Keep up the great content!?!
Appreciate the kind words .
Man, I love your stuff👍
Thank you! New tying video drops tomorrow around noon.
Nice tutorial bet i will fish great for me in a size 20 for my incredibly picky trout. Have a good day! bye.
You have a solid, unique but incredibly helpful way about pattern videos. Great job man. Seriously. I've never messed with CDC and may very well to try out this pattern.
Thank you for the kind words . Don’t let the dubbing loops and cdc worry you. Once you get it down it’s not as bad as you think .
You can palmer CDC for the collar as well if you don't have a clip like in the video. CDC works great on nymph patterns.
Brilliant tutorial, I do fishing videos and tie my own flies. But have never done a fly tying video. I think when someone like your self who do this so brilliantly, why would I bother. I do have a pattern very similar and it has caught me a lot of fish. I do like the look of your pattern and will get on it asap. I have subscribed so that I don't miss anything. Take care and thanks so much. Shaun.
Shaun, thank you for your kind words. Just checked out your channel and subbed . Love your approach to teaching the finer points of still water . I really enjoy loch style fishing and still water but sadly moved away from the best trout lake in my state (New Mexico). Looking forward to your future videos .
just checking the site, looking good, make it good and thanks
Really nice looking nymph pattern mate - well done 👍
Thank you. It has become a staple in my freestone boxes.
3:18 bro said doo doo 💩
Nice
I'd love to try one of those under the ice this season...
Maybe sub the CDL tail for some marabou ?
Boom💥
You need to do a midge tutorial dedicated to that HUGE tie flyer guy, who loves tenkara poles.
Eew. Gross.
When you watch @hugeflyfisherman next video , you’ll see a pattern where you’ll never have to throw a midge again .
Can't wait for that. I wouldn't use a midge if it was the only thing catching fish. I'd need a microscope to find it in the box, and I might get it tied on before the end of the day. That and I hardly ever get to trout fish, so 7wt bass streamer patterns it is.
@@jthrash75 double euro midge rig.... 🤣 it's officially a new challenge for Huge.
@@jthrash75 He uses a single minnow tenkara rig in one video and catches a bass
I love flies to trick bluegill and crappie, Ontario ,Canada
This fly flat out produces.
👍
Awesome fly. I’m going to try a few of these soon. Do you ever tie it with a little orange hot spot at the bead?
I haven’t really messed with a hot spot but let me know how it does for you . My buddy ties these with a pink bead and does well . I like having the pop of the tag for a trigger point but I’m sure a hot spot would be a great edition .
Not sure that my skills are ready for this one!
I’ll do a video on dubbing loops . To make life easier you could just try the mid tag which I posted not too long ago. Happy tying !
You got this Terry Hayes.
Have you fished it with and without the hotspot tag? Does it make a difference?
I’m a big believer in hot spots but I think more than anything presentation is the most important . I’m sure it will fish fine without the tag. Thanks for watching .
Are there any advantages for the horizontal eye on the jig hook?
It’s easier to oversized beads because the eye sits transverse.
I'm heading out to Pueblo tailwater on the Arkansas... think it will work?
Yes, I’d fish it smaller though . Good luck !
Charlie Craven thinks most people should tie with the non dominant hand winding the thread and the dominant holding the materials. Maybe this was bad advice haha
I actually used to tie that way until someone corrected me when I was 13 haha. Who knows, what works for you is what’s best.
Where can I get that sweatshirt??
Thanks for asking . www.abouttrout.com/etsy-shop
There’s one that I’m wearing and one that’s says “about trout” underneath . They come in a couple different colors as well. If you like your hoodies a little baggie I would order one size larger than what you wear.
Thanks again !
Beard be gone!
Chip clips work really well for the cdc dubbing. And they aren’t 18 bucks 😬
💯
Life hack: Have your good scissors actually just be 2 inch long generic fiskars. Then you'll be only screwing up junkers
14+ minutes for a guide fly? Now I see why you have to get client lunches from a gas station.
The struggle is real .
As long as it wasn't gas station sushi I'd be fine with it. I don't know about you all in New Mexico or Colorado, but here in Cali, if you can find a Mexican owned gas station, they make the best burritos.
14+ Minutes for a guide fly? Kelly Gallup this one any more James?
Is it possible to be aroused watching fly tying???
That is a question you just answer for yourself
seriously! 1 min into the video another annoying commercial. RUclips is worse than old school TV
