    It seems like Mont Blanc are taking the piss a bit with this one. It's fine to charge far more than other companies, but that should result in higher than standard customer service. And not admitting to there being a problem with the marks is inexcusable in my opinion.

    Welcome back!!! Been missing your reviews.
    Awesome job as usual.
    Personally I'm always torn between the Pelikan and Montblanc. I love the classic Montblanc styling, but every one I own has had issues. Pelikan, on the other hand, has been flawless. Currently I'm unable to choose between my M800 & vintage 100N every time I'm confronted by paper though I'm clearly spoiled by choice.
    I think my 100N is the best writer I have even though it gives more feedback than the M800 (or even my TWSBI's). Such a classic style, but yet a fabulous performer and I measured a 2 ml ink capacity!!! Couldn't believe it.
    I have a Montblanc 149 I've been delaying having repaired, but thinking of it always makes me crave that styling. Trying to decide whether to repair the 149 or just buy a new M1000 now. Sadly even money.
    Which (in perfect working order) do you prefer as a brand - Montblanc or Pelikan?
    By the way, please do keep up with the reviews. I love to see new videos from you & really do appreciate the effort and expert opinions.

    Excellent videography and great review Dan!
    Although I'm a big fan of Montblanc pens and love using Bohème pens this pen doesn't do much for me. I cannot get over how small the nib is compared to overall size of the pem.

    Great review as always sir. As much as I like this pen, I can't justify the hefty price tag. As far as retractable nibs go, I'm still very pleased with my Pilot VP. And in terms of price, I'd much rather two used MB 149s...

    I purchased this pen late last year from Dromgoole's in Houston. I'm very happy with it and since it's one of many pens that I own, when in the rotation, I don't get tired of going through the 'ritual'. I have a medium nib ground to a nice italic with beautiful line variation.
    If you can afford this pen, it won't be a disappointment. I do also suffer from the micro scratches from the cap. For now they're hard to see, but over time and with extended use, I think they'll become much more pronounced. Hopefully when that time comes, Mont Blanc will take care of me.
    Nino

      I believe the body and cap etc are covered under the normal service fees by montblanc (at least it is for meisterstucks) not entirely sure about the 1912, but seeing as its a full run model i imagine there should be similar service

    Hi & thanks Dan for your review. I'm interested in your thoughts about what ink to use with Montblanc. I recently purchased the Montblanc 149 as a gift for myself. It's a very handsome instrument & I'm pleased with my choice. The ink however is an issue I would like your opinion on. The info provided with the 149 endorses the use of Montblanc ink. I bought a couple of bottles but wondered if I should consider another ink and brand option in the future.
    Would you please shed some light on this for me. Should I stick with Montblanc ink, or do I broaden my outlook and consider another quality option?

    This pen is very very high in demand now. It's not meant to be a design to follow the Boheme and so shouldnt stand in its shadows. Rather, compared to the simplo safety pen, it is a technical upgrade to the eye-dropper design and integrates a piston filler within it. So one can use the pen ceremoniously like the original safety pen with all the ink kept in in the piston filler. The pocket size makes it a nice shirt pocket every day carrier. It's a Montblanc, so how cheap can it be ? The emblem on the top of the pen cap is nice and very classy. Some buyers buy 2 in different nib size and it's sold out everywhere. Late adopters have the following options. 1) Buy it second hand, 2) Buy the larger regular Heritage 1914, 3) If you have deeper pockets, you can buy the titanium version of the Heritage 1912 or the coral version of the Heritage 1914.

  • @MrPleers
    @MrPleers 8 лет назад +2

    What is the point of having a retractactable nib and AND cap ? The mechanism inside the pen to make it retractable takes up space that could have been used to store more ink. And it also limits the size of the nib.

    • @thenibsmith
      @thenibsmith  7 лет назад

      The design is an homage to its vintage counterpart, which I explained in the video. Also, building in a mechanism to seal the nib would take up additional space and require a larger barrel or a smaller nib. Look at the VP or Dialog 3 as examples. The 1912 has a larger nib than both of those and maintains a reasonably sized barrel yet is more compact when capped than both of those so it fits much better into a pocket.

  • @dericksolano227

    Beautiful pen, I like the subtle and minimalist design, and the retractable nib looks like a nice feature, the imprint looks a little bit dull. However the price on Montblancs are way overpriced.

    Really excellent review. What I like almost of all was the observation about the damages on the body of the pen! left by the cup!!! This is a very bad thing Montblanc didn't consider !! I should have bought one but after this review I discovered this defect of project doesn't appeal to me! No I will not buy a pen whit a such defect.
    Has the Montblanc Boeheme the same or similar defect??
    I have seen other reviews but this is the only has noticed this defect. Very smart observation. Regards

    • @thenibsmith
      @thenibsmith  6 лет назад +1

      Montblanc seems to have changed the design so the defect is minimal, but still there. I purchased one several months after I published the video and I can barely notice it. The Boheme does not suffer from the safe defect because of it's completely different design.

    • @zenrazor659
      @zenrazor659 6 лет назад

      Thanks for the answer. But from my point of view is totally bad a pen suffering of this kind of defect considering also the amount of 900,00€!!!! and the 14kt gold nib!. Montblanc should change totally the project. The Boheme has not this defect you said. But I see that is sold out. No more producted by Montblanc. The safety nib is really cool but must be realized in a perfect way. Another fact a little disapointing is the small nib on the Heritage. A normal size nib should fit better for the daily use of the pen! I think Montblanc is starting to lose strokes!

  • @zinkyra2958
    @zinkyra2958 8 лет назад

    Dan, Is it plausible that the body wear that you noted as a flaw is actually by design. My impression is that it adds to the mystique of the 1912's vintage soul like no other?
    Also my impression is that the low chamber volume + flat flexy nib makes this pen primarily crafted as a signatory pen to begin with?

    • @jupatj24
      @jupatj24 7 лет назад

      Don't fool yourself into thinking this. 50s 149s are as mystique as vintage souls get. And you don't get to see ridiculous ink capacity or unsightly marks around the body. Take a look at the M series. Montblanc has become a joke.

    So the bohème is better and cheaper?

    • @thenibsmith
      @thenibsmith  6 лет назад +2

      Not necessarily. There are some expensive Bohemes out there. Personally, I find the design of the 1912 more attractive and love the built-in piston filler.

    • @av5312
      @av5312 6 лет назад

      I think the cartridge system of the bohème is quite practical and very amusing to use, as it is integrated in the twisting mechanism. I share your opinion regarding the design, the 1912 really is a vintage masterpiece.

  • @GenWivern2

    The video? Photography and quality are exceptional once again, Dan. The pen? I'm not sold on the Meisterstück aesthetic and this is more to my taste, but the design seems to have some fairly significant flaws - the posting and the "normal wear and tear" are blunders. And finally I'll say it once again: a skippy nib on a Kaweco Sport is an annoyance ... on a $1100 pen it's downright scandalous.

    • @GenWivern2
      @GenWivern2 10 лет назад

      *****
      Haha! No, not really, except for an exotic mechanical pencil and a Waterman which is resisting my attempts at identification. I'll post both on the forum eventually. The latter resembles a Targa (with the cap on!) so definitely not in my usual line, but it's a nicely made pen.

  • @CWTmovement
    @CWTmovement 10 лет назад +10

    "...the pen was unusable" when first opened and tried. So you had to have it "adjusted"? I do not understand a fountain pen community that glosses over what has to be the most fundamental function of a writing instrument. It's one thing to "tweak" a nib,....but get it to write??!! Just absurd.

    Montblanc seems they have lost some quality the last few years. When I pay $1100 I expect a good quality usable pen free from defects and issues. I watched a review on the Montblanc M rollerball with the magnetic cap, in which the clip on the cap did not line up with the design on the barrel. My guess was that the magnet was improperly installed in the cap. Montblanc needs to stop focusing on producing so many different models and focus on making fewer models that are of exceptional quality, like it used to be.
