Nice review! How many hours did you play the game? I understand not finishing a game you are not enjoying, but in my opinion there is a big diference between leaving it just a after an hour or two or leaving it after 40 hours before the final boss when doing a review. It would be useful to know on how much time have you played or what percentage of the game have you beaten if possible in this type of review.
good point, i spent 4 hours in the game. i really tried to stick around as long as possible but then it started feeling like work. i understand not finishing a game decreases the review's helpfulness, but may also save people from wasting time/money if they share similar views also: please check out other reviews if you are still curious about Ultros. i recommend this one by I Dream of Indie Games >ruclips.net/video/RSTVivPB3Lw/видео.html
@@nocapsbb Not finishing a game doesn't have to decrease the helpfulness, maybe I gave the wrong idea. Someone that has completed 90% of the game and didn't even try to go throught that 10% that's left has a pretty good understanding of the game and someone with similar tastes as you that has left the game unfinished after just 10% of it gives you the impresion that is a game that is not even worth to try. But it's this time/completition specifics changes the general tone of the review and makes it more helpful.
@@chobijas Combined with the time mechanics comments from nocaps it really seems like a chore and not something enjoyable. It's a shame, I liked the demo but between your comment and the review I don't have any hype for it left and have no intention of buying it.
@@xavisiguero It feels like the time loop mechanic is there just to make the game longer. If they add some features in the future to make the game less tedious and more approachable I'd say that it's okay enough. As it is right now it's difficult to recommend, mostly if you are someone that doesn't have a lot of time to play games. It has 80% positive on OpenCritic tho, so maybe it just wasn't for me
There is a fast travel but only once you connect some stuff!! There’s also permanent unlocks and if you made it to later loops an npc gives you all your stuff at the beginning of the loops from there on out!! It’s a rogue lite but can literally be beaten as a pacifist without fighting!! It’s really cool just gotta learn the systems
Interesting take. I really liked the time loop. The ability to lock skills in place between loops was a very creative and elegant melding of Metroidvania and roguelike that refreshed the formula of both. I found the mystery of the planting & harvesting, lore & dialogue, and the gradual unfurling of the map to be a real pleasure. Fast travel arrived later in an astoundingly creative way, and there are efforts around loop 4-5-6 to speed up getting back what you've lost. This is a 10/10 game for me, I hope you give it another try!
it's actually really good to hear there is fast travel later on. i'll keep an eye out for a good steam guide, though i still am not sold on the time loop
@@nocapsbb When the form that fast travel takes became apparent, my jaw dropped! There's an active element in making it happen that made me see the map in a whole new way :)
@@GamingInTheWild Summed it up pretty well! I understand how it can be a hit or miss, but I enjoyed Ultros so much. I spent a lot of time just playing with the plant mechanics, and the fast travel system was such a surprise. I felt enormous satisfaction playing this game, and it's pretty unique in many aspects, too.
This is exactly I felt , played for 20 hour connected some stuff, but like she said too much back tracking and honesty there isn't much to do in the huge map except the main quest. Gets boring and frustrating very fast.
Finally a channel with short to the point videos. Feels like old times youtube. Good job. Definitely a sub. No overblown 20 minutes watered down stuff for monetisation purpose etc.
I absolutely love this game. For one thing it's easily one of the most visually interesting games I've ever played. Anyone who likes modern surrealism and pop-art should play this. The time loop/plant growth/lvl manipulation mechanic was incredibly well-crafted. And it turned all the backtracking into new explorations. Everything you plant grows with each loop and different plants open up new paths. It's super satisfying to discover some seed turned into a plant that lets you run on walls or another that grew vines to swing across! Also you can lock upgrades in and not have to re-unlock them. Extra also regaining your abilities becomes easier and easier. I get it if you didn't dig the game but I feel like you reviewed it without putting much time into it at all.
This worries me as I loved the demo and didn’t think it’d be a rogue lite. That said, this is more of a first impression or first hours rather than review.
@Nocapsbb i saw this comment and thought of you "This game has a 'time loop' mechanic where you beat a major boss and you 'reset' and lose all abilities, including traversal... BUT, you get traversal ones back very fast (under 5 mins according to another comment?) and others are much easier to get back fast. A few reviewers ive read reviews on have said its NOT like that though, and how you have to actually find the abilities themselves every time and its very tedious. But it seems the reviewers had a bug in their build, or something... Maybe the opposite I guess. But the timeloop 'may' be majorly bugged making it a worse game. "
it may just not be for you. from what i've seen, i;tros is a game that really rewards patience. you may hate rain world too, before you get to the point where folks fall in love with it.
Extraordinary concepts marred by poor execution and downright bizarre design choices seems to be a long-standing theme with indie-vanias. Sundered is still one of the biggest disappointments I've ever experienced and Ultros unfortunately looks like it's taken many of the same exact mis-steps. Thanks for the review/impression.
All I heard was frustrating and exhausting...Those two words are enough for me...I played the demo & it was decent but it didnt really make me feel like I want to play the full game.. BTW what are you favorite games like this that are new? Im mainly curious about Last faith, gunbrella, blasphemous 2, erra exordium, faeland, cookie cutter & if there is any you have played you want to add that are amazing?
I Like those kind of HONEST REVIEWS, because much of the channels try to promote the game, and the games sometimes sucks. So, a point for your channel!! my support from argentina!
This game has fast travel. You need to build your network. You didn't play long enough to review the game based upon the multitude of details you left out.
If she found the game unpleasant after 4 hours, she played long enough. Just because the mechanics reveal themselves later, the game ruined its first impression, and didn’t give her confidence that it was worth wasting more time on.
I think this is a missed opportunity because on one hand you have these truly remarkable visuals and then you find out it's......yet another rogue game. As far as i am concerned it's just lazy making something into a rogue game as it makes some things much easier in development where they don't have to work quiet as hard on saving large chunks of progression. From a game playing perspective, the rogue stuff feels a bit AI-like as it doesn't feel personal with things changing all the time. I don't like it. Of course, it's all personal opinion/preference. Give me Hollow Knight any day and night first and foremost over this sort of thing.
@@GamingInTheWild yes, i've played up to second boss and it really is. Just has a rogue element or two but none of the procedurally generated levels that i usually don't like. It's a pretty good game. Very cool stuff. The art is something special i'd say.
@@pETERISBEST12345 Yeah. Roguelike games are a different thing. There's a small splash of roguelike in the mix here, alongside action-platforming, puzzles, metroidvania-style gated exploration, and even Outer Wilds-style meta-puzzle. Tagging this a roguelike is a surface-level take that misunderstands the game, in my opinion! The nod to roguelike mechanics is just such a small part of the big picture. I can't say why without spoilers, but it's ultimately just not a big part of the game.
