I recently saw a study where substrate supplemented with dried moth pupae powder significantly increased Cordycepin content vs. other supplemented substrates. Lots of cool research going on with Cordyceps now which is awesome. Just 10 years ago, people thought they were too difficult to bother trying to grow.
@@RenegadeMushrooms I had this funny thought on those "beefier" cordyceps with the eggs. Think "MUSCLES" ! Protein builds muscles and those are bicep cordyceps! LOL!
I tried egg broth in rice cooker. Not ideal as it burns easily. The way to not burn is reduce cooking time but that also allows the possibility of contamination. You may have already figured this out but figured I’d mention my experience
Hey Renegade! Can you tell me what your favorite strain of Cordyceps is? I was thinking I'd like to try growing them in a monotub. Also, how soon do I need to use the LC after I receive it? Or can it be kept in the fridge for a while? Thanks :)
It can be kept in the fridge for awhile. The key is to not over-expand them because they genetically degrade so quickly. It's not really as much as storage issue as it is a expansion issue. I usually use one syringe to make two quart jars of LC. My best grows have been strains from Terrestrial Fungi and Fresh Fungi (on Etsy).
Hi Renegade, couple comments. I've got a whole tent full of cordyceps going that I did in batches of a half dozen jars each or so. So far I've lost a total of two jars to contamination but all four of the bins are looking bad. One was almost completely covered in bright orange and also egg yolk yellow mycelium. But there was a couple spots that wouldn't fill in. Suspicious I checked the bottom and see a speck of red contamination! I knew it was too good to be true. The other three bins did not fully colonize even after 3 weeks growth. They have a slightly fermented bogus smell to them. I'm not waiting to see the visible contams I just know they're going to fail so I remove them all. After a moment of sadness I recovered deciding instead to focus my energy on the ones that are good. I'm starting to realize if I don't see complete colonation within a week's time there's a pretty good chance contamination is present. Just wanted to pass that along
and great videos 😎 keep it up! Yes, I'm afraid because some of the recipes are not the cheapest, I would like to have a real recipe directly and not possibly misunderstand something, so I'm afraid that I won't be able to bring it to fruition. Don't the eggs get hard if you sterilize them in the cooker? or does it not matter similar to agar? So far I have only bred wood decomposed and P.C 😁 no one else now have a strain cordyceps there! and rice also already eggs not much else have to know what exactly I need and how I proceed so quantities 😎
Try that egg recipe, it's simple and cheap if you're going to grow in jars. Temperature and good genetics are critical. Try to keep it 60 - 65 F, and buy a good culture. Kaizen Cordyceps is good, they are in England. The egg recipe does turn into a solid cake after PC similar to agar, but the mycelium rips through it.
@@RenegadeMushrooms Yes super cool thing I will do that I have almost everything there now and then it starts 💪 wait for an addition then I have everything thank you

Definitely, you would just want to gear your nutrient broth toward the nutritional requirements of whatever species you're growing. The catch is, it's low yield when compared to other methods, but it's also fairly simple and fool-proof. Enoki works well with this method.
They will produce a second flush, but it takes a while and is less productive than the 1st. People growing commercially generally don't bother from what I've heard. If you're just growing for fun though, give it a try.
I’m a noob could be way off base but wondering if there anything that could work as a liner to help prevent the side pins? That could produce more fruits on the top surface? What would survive in the PC? Maybe an old spawn bag or something? This could be a very cool side project. Thanks for all your videos man I have learned a lot from them. Hope you know it’s appreciated!
It would have to be something that would contract as the substrate contracts, tough to pull off probably. Glad you are getting something out of the vids 👍
I'm having a hard time getting the right amount of liquid culture onto the rice. Apparently the needle I tried was way too small so I just had to eyeball by pouring it from my liquid culture jar. This has proved to work over 95% of the time but I'm looking for a suggestions on how to know I'm adding just the right amount. Some of my cakes didn't fully colonize and I'm wondering if I either added too much or not enough liquid culture. Thanks for everything you're my go-to for cordyceps
Are you talking about when you add the nutrient broth to the rice before putting in the PC? Or, after the PC, when you squirt your liquid culture through the injection port?
@@RenegadeMushrooms I'm referring to adding the L.C. what size needle should I using to draw up the L.C. from the jar? I suspect the contams as well as lack of colonization I'm seeing relate to too much or not enough L.C. being added. Because I'm running about 5 different strains and the results are varied. Some jars look great and others not. Or else I'd suspect contams in the L.C. itself
@@geofftenoever9852 You can get a second flush but it takes a long time. Because of that it's not considered a commercially viable technique but if you're just growing for yourself you can try it.
Hey bro, thanks for the video! I used your egg broth recipe and after 7 days the colonization stagnated. It's now the 10th day. There's a bit of mist on the side of the jar, but very little. Should I mist in a still air box to help the growth or is it dangerous to contaminate? I'll be using distilled water with 70% of the cake colonized
Mine didn't stall out like that but I've heard of that happening. I would inject another 5 ccs of LC in there and swirl it around. That may get them over the hump. If you're doing quart jars I see people recommending around 20 ccs of LC per jar which is a lot more than what I used in this video.
Hey, great video again, thank for sharing. I have 2 questions, you are saying 30 grams of rice and 36 ml of broth, or 36 grams of broth? My other question is, you said that this recipe or the 'jar setup" could also be used for Enoki?
It was 30 g. of brown rice to 36 ml. of nutrient broth and it worked out well. This will work for enoki with the correct strain and nutrient broth recipe but your yields will be relatively low. I did a similar grow recently in this video: ruclips.net/video/8r0W2U4VBwo/видео.html
Do you wait till you see full colonization on the top of your rice before moving it to the lights? Or do you move it to the lights within a certain time frame regardless what you see? Thank you as always for your guidance
Lately, I haven't been incubating more than three days in the dark, then they go under the lights regardless of colonization. Some people on the FB group only go one day in the dark.
Hi i did all like you said but i think i burnd a bit my rice, is it possible? May be too much hit? Or maybe too less juice? What you think? Anyway i gave it injection of cordyceps and hoping for the best
Hey Renegade, is there a easier method to determine the amount of rice and broth needed for specific amounts of Liquid culture? So if I have about 300 MLS of L.C. how many jars should I prepare? Just wondering if there's a math equation to determine it? Like blank percent L.C. to blank amount of rice and broth? Thx
If your jars are the same size as mine figure on about 3 ccs per jar of LC. Then increase a accordingly. That's what I did and it worked fine, but some people use a lot higher ratio of LC. This worked for me, but you could also ask on the Cordyceps Growing FB Group to get some other perspectives.
Just the light that naturally fills a room would be fine. I wouldn't put them near a window though because of the temp swings and risk of direct light and associated heating/condensation.
Not sure on the substrate, but the fruits are edible. You would definitely want to cook it thoroughly and not use any substrate additives that would affect the edibility.
You can leave the cakes I'm the jars and they will eventually flush a second time. Second flushes with militaris aren't generally considered commercially viable, but if you're just growing for yourself, give it a try.
Hope you are doing good today man! I have the broth mix from Appalachiangold. It says it can be mixed with 1 liter of water and can make 20 quart jars...how much should I use if I'm using your tek to make 6 of the plastic containers. I appreciate any help you can give.
Not sure on the glucose. I would recommend you asking on the Cordyceps Growers FB Group. People their are very knowledgeable on nutritional requirements.
Not personally, but I understand the concern. I always try to use glass when I can, but PP5 plastics are used all over the mushroom growing world so it kinda comes with the territory.
I don't have that strain currently, it was from Fresh Fungi Shop on Etsy. He still has strains there but not sure if they are from that lineage. You can find him here: www.etsy.com/shop/freshfungi
Some of my bins got uneven colonization on top. Where some parts are thick and look good and others seem completely bare. Is that from likely contamination or with how I poured it poured in the liquid culture?
If you are stirring your LC into your rice before packing in the bin, it should be getting evenly mixed throughout the rice. As long as your mixing it in well, any spots that don't colonize are likely because of bacteria.
@@RenegadeMushrooms I shake the jar of L.C. then pour it onto the rice cake. I don't pour because I'm already nervous about contams. I need a reliable way to determine how much L.C. to add. Should the rice be (just wetted) or should there be enough liquid culture for it to accumulate on the bottom of the container? I've just been pouring it in in front of my flow hood. Then I swirl it around to distribute the culture. If I think there's too much liquid I pour some off. Its been working OK but I'd rather get 100% good results
@@momsmushroomsjodyfoster5786 I'm thinking the easiest way would to just get some larger needles and inject so you don't have to open your lid. I only used 3 ccs of LC for 30 grams of dry rice which is 10%, most people seem to have good luck with 25% LC, so like 7 to 8 ccs. I was on the low end of the spectrum for this grow but it still worked out. The bacteria could be getting in when you open the lid.
No, I haven't done much with the cakes yet myself because I'm not sure of the edibility of the supplements I use in my standard nutrient broth recipe. The egg based substrate should be fine though, it's just eggs, nutritional yeast, and dextrose. I wouldn't eat the cakes directly though because of bacterial concerns, but they would work great for a tincture or something along those lines.
tried this on 6 jars with the egg method and everything went well (aside from the two I injected with mislabeled Lion's Mane LC instead of cordyceps LC -- was surprised that they actually grew lions mane on egg and brown rice!), but my cordyceps seem to have stalled out with like 2-5 fruits in each container. I have them below a window because I don't have any fancy lighting aside from some cheap LEDs in a grow tent. Any ideas?
Where did you get your culture, how old is it, and what are your temperatures? I would guess it's an issue with one of those factors. That is cool it grew Lions Mane, cool unintentional experiment 👍
Dude I must be the sloppiest mushroom grower. I have to show you what grew out of one jar. Do you have Instagram or email? Dm me @humanscientist - I somehow grew oysters on the rice but it must be a spore getting into the jar because the other jar from the same culture grew cordyceps!
I think my pressure cooker has gotten too hot many times as it's kind of lifted up until the bottom is nearly pointed. Now I'm having nothing but problems getting it up to temperature and staying there. It fluctuates wildly and has become a real pain in the butt
There a ton of recipe possibilities and it's fun to play with different ingredients. Try it out! The lids never come off until picking time. The filter patch in the lid gives them all the air exchange they need.
Say I'm wondering how I determine when to harvest. They look ready as they're covered in the prickly fertile surface. But I can't believe how small many of them are. Not even as thick as a piece of spaghetti. And only about 3 cm tall. I have a few chunky ones but it's very inconsistent. :(( feeling disappointed 😞
It's usually 45 to 60 days from inoculation, and yeah, they should be covered with perithecia. The small size could be genetics. Where is your culture from, and how old is it?
@@momsmushroomsjodyfoster5786 Try a new strain, maybe hit up Ryan at Terrestrial Fungi. I've found that yield can vary significantly from syringe to syringe, so try mixing it up. Appalachian Gold is good, just try different strains. Sounds like you are close to getting the method down.
@@RenegadeMushrooms just a couple more questions plz, should the cakes have a pleasant smell when healthy? I definitely detected a very pungent smell of sour rott fermentation on the bins I suspected of having contams. Also what do they look like if they go too long? Do they begin quickly showing signs of degeneration or problems? Also can I harvest just the big ones and let the small ones keep growing? Or does that not work? Thx again #MushroomFantasies
@@RenegadeMushrooms yes my previous strains from A.G. were nice and thick. I'm not too discouraged. Plus he's been very helpful and supportive when I've had questions. And he stands behind his products and gladly replaced one contaminated syringe with 2 in its place! I super appreciate Jeff Manganaro and will continue getting cultures from him
You can get a second flush by just waiting, but it takes a while and is not as effective as it is with other mushrooms so it's typically not considered a commercially viable tactic with Cordys. If you're just growing for yourself however, go for it.
Cloning doesn't work well with Cordyceps, they senesce too quickly unfortunately. Productive cultures need to made continuously by pairing ascospores from fertile fruitbodies.
I only did about 3 ccs per jar. Some people do quite a bit more, but that worked for me. Just make sure they have cooled to room temp before you inoculate.
@@RenegadeMushrooms I will try in my next batch, it's cheaper, available and more nutritional, my main concern is lentil has enough complex carbonhydatres to supplement ideal growth, will try and learn.

Roughly 7.7 billion people on earth use it already, and with your help we might just convince the rest!
Yeah, I recklessly use US Standard and metric and switch back and forth, sometimes even in the same video. It might be petty, but as a citizen scientist in the good old US of A, I've had to learn to use both interchangeably, so I think everyone else should to.
Nice grow.. The container from root can they be used over and over again in the PC or is there a minimum usage going thru the PC? I'm going to try the 12qt tub method again and if I get contamination I will do the jar method. Thanks for spreading the knowledge.
They are good for multiple uses in the PC, but I'm not sure how many. They will eventually wear out. A straight-walled glass canning jar works well too with a 1/4 inch hole in the lid with polyfil or a stick-on filter disc.
@@RenegadeMushrooms Thanks. I noticed on Ryan P Gates or Jeff's channel a quart jar growing Cordyceps sideways instead of right side up. Think I might try that if the tub grow fails. As always I appreciate your feedback.👍
@@ranjanty That's cool, haven't tried side fruiting them yet. For grow containers, I know Ryan prefers PP5 deli style containers with a couple holes in the lid covered with micropore tape. Lots of container options, but the plastic will eventually break down, where the glass won't.
@@RenegadeMushrooms one last question . Did you have to add an injection port to those containers ? On root mushroom site it just shows a filter on the lid, but nowhere to inject
Can you remind me what prevents pinning for cordyceps? Isn't there something called overgrowth? I'm probably saying it wrong, but something to where they just keep laying down new layers of mycelium but not making pins? Thank you
@@RenegadeMushrooms wish I could show you a pic. I used the same liquid culture 10 days later with a different broth recipe that includes Silk Worm pupae and the one has pins a couple centimeters tall.
@@RenegadeMushrooms so I just figured out what was causing my Cordy cake to stall off from pinning. I put it under some bright lights and had a very close look at it and can clearly detect to light green patches of trich starting deep in the middle. It's crazy cuz I was watching one of Gary's videos today dude with fresh on the farm fungi. That's who I got the culture from and he had the same thing happen in a video from March. His toe looked almost identical to mine but it had a tiny patch of green in it and it wasn't producing. So now I know
I saw a technique on the shroomery boards long ago from a guy named Roger Rabbit I think. He was talking about a technique of crossing strains by colonizing a smaller jar with a haploid mycelia. The colonization rate of haploids are slow so that why the smaller jar. Anyway after the jar is fully colonized you inject it with a multi spore syringe or a multispore plate. The mycelium mate and create a new strain to which you fruit and the spores from that new cross will be your new strain. The process the haploid mycelium goes through is called anastomosis I think. Do you have any thoughts on if this works or have you heard of it?
Roger Rabbit probably on Shroomery, he da man. It's typically done now on agar petri plates. Ascospores are isolated to produce haploid mycelium which is paired with another haploid to form diploid mycelium which will be a viable sexual fruiting strain. Cordyceps senesces quickly, so they must be constantly bred to produce a stream of viable fruiting strains. If you're interested in the process, check out the "Cordyceps Growers" Facebook group.
Picked things up from lots of different places and then a good bit of trial and error. People on shroomery started having limited success like 15 years ago, lately it's really taken off. Mostly online research.

With Cordyceps, people are often most interested in Cordycepin content.
LOL!

Outstanding grow! Can the egg broth be applied to the rice cooker tek?
Thank you, I dont think it would work well because the egg hardens right up during cooking, but it might be a fun experiment to try.
Yeah, sounds like you are having bacterial issues. Are you using the rice cooker method or the jar sterilization method?
which is your favorite way to grow cordyceps? These (or pint) jars, monotub , or the 2 smaller tubs you used in another video?
So far it's the tubs.
and great videos 😎 keep it up!
@@RenegadeMushrooms Yes super cool thing I will do that I have almost everything there now and then it starts 💪 wait for an addition then I have everything thank you
I tried the egg broth and when they came out of the P/C the cakes were not flat on the bottom of the jars🤔🤣🙃Not sure how to get them to sit flat, any ideas???? Of will they still grow on a slant 💁♀Mush love light and kindness always🙏💙🍄💙🙏
I think a few of them did that to me too, but they eventually fell back in to place. Just inoculate them anyway, they will be fine I think.
As always, thanks for sharing. Are there any other mushroom(s) that could be grown using this tek?
Definitely, you would just want to gear your nutrient broth toward the nutritional requirements of whatever species you're growing. The catch is, it's low yield when compared to other methods, but it's also fairly simple and fool-proof. Enoki works well with this method.
Great video! When growing cordys, are the cakes one and done grows or can the cakes produce more fruits?
They will produce a second flush, but it takes a while and is less productive than the 1st. People growing commercially generally don't bother from what I've heard. If you're just growing for fun though, give it a try.
@@RenegadeMushrooms thank you for the info I really appreciate it. ❤️
Or else I'd suspect contams in the L.C. itself
Thanks .. do you only get one flush from the rice cake Tek?
@@RenegadeMushrooms thank you brother. Do you think it is ok just to spray distilled water mist on it after it is 100% colonized?
@@Gvidas28 I would not do that unless it looks like they are hopeless.
I did a similar grow recently in this video:
ruclips.net/video/8r0W2U4VBwo/видео.html
Correction about your initial comment. I used 30 g. of brown rice to 36 ml. of nutrient broth. I did the nutrient broth by volume.

Can you confirm the amount of LC that's injected into each jar/container please?
2 - 3 ccs.
Do you think that leaving the jars by a window (without much direct sun though) is okay, or is the artificial light needed?
Just the light that naturally fills a room would be fine. I wouldn't put them near a window though because of the temp swings and risk of direct light and associated heating/condensation.

Can you also eat the substrate? How many nutrients does the substrate still have?
Not sure on the substrate, but the fruits are edible. You would definitely want to cook it thoroughly and not use any substrate additives that would affect the edibility.

Did you try to get another fruiting progress for the Cordycakes?
I didn't end up going for a second flush with these cakes. What I harvest at the end of the video was my total yield.
Can you get a 2nd flush with this? Would the yield be worth the wait?
You can, but the yield is generally considered not worth the wait if you are trying to grow for volume.
Did you add 500ml of water or the total subtrate makes upto 500 ?
The broth recipe makes 500 ml. and I had extra left over. Just make sure you add 36 ml. per jar.
How much LC per jar would you recommend? Sorry if I missed it even rewatched it maybe missed it twice lol😅

I didn't know there were different kinds, but no it shouldn't matter.

Yes you can but it takes a while. 2nd flushes generally aren't considered commercially viable but give it a go if you're just experimenting.
tried this on 6 jars with the egg method and everything went well (aside from the two I injected with mislabeled Lion's Mane LC instead of cordyceps LC -- was surprised that they actually grew lions mane on egg and brown rice!), but my cordyceps seem to have stalled out with like 2-5 fruits in each container. I have them below a window because I don't have any fancy lighting aside from some cheap LEDs in a grow tent. Any ideas?
