Finally a colorist who explain the basics with super details for people like me who has been struggling to start a page of the hundred coloring books I have, but I have been so intimidated by starting because I feel I have no idea what I am doing.
UPDATE! BIG BREAK THROUGH! Several hours after watching this found me coloring -- what else, right? -- and getting frustrated because yet again my picture on the page was so one dimensional! I colored one picture, then another. Both throw aways. Literally! Then it was like in the quiet of the early morning hours I heard your voice telling me to start using the five different pencil techniques you covered in this tutorial. "OK, that's strange," I thought, but I'll try it. And boy! I colored my very first 3D rose and it was like you could smell it! Well needless to say I didn't go to sleep and the morning found me so excited that I woke up my wife and she just couldn't believe it the completed picture! She told me that maybe I listened to my Angel! Thanks again for all you do! I'll never forget this experience!
Thank You for your time and energy in these tutorials. I had a horrible experience with a nasty Art teacher when very young and never learned any coloring techniques. I'm now choosing to play in coloring books at 68 years young and you explain and teach so well. A grateful coloring enthusiast.💞
As a new Colorist of 6 months I was just telling my wife that I am so tired of my pictures being one dimensional! In 5 minutes you set me free and gave me wings! Thanks so much!
I'm going over a lot of the videos for beginners and this one should definitely be the first for other beginners. I've been coloring for a year now and this is the first time actually understanding the different methods. Thank you Lori!
Great video on coloring techniques! I really appreciated the breakdown of each method, especially stippling-it's my favorite too because I find it so relaxing. The tips on hatching and cross-hatching were super helpful for adding depth. Thanks for sharing these techniques; they’re fantastic for anyone looking to refine their coloring skills!
Thank you I just bought my first "expensive" 36 piece colouring pencils today I can't wait to get started I'm no artist but always loved colouring. As a 41 year old mom growing up and going to school I've only owned two sets of 12 piece pencils my whole 12 years of school I decided this is my turn and I wanted to do this for myself my hubby helped me do research on different colouring pencils the pros and cons of the difference between them and bought myself a student artist set of Lyra Graduate pensils cant wait to start colouring tomorrow
I was just commenting on the lack of beginner level coloring how-to tutorials. Rather than stuggling with an arduous search, you've provided a great set of basics. I'm going to follow through with your other more in depth videos. Thank you, you've increased my knowledge base significantly.
Thank you so much Kim. I LOVE teaching. I didn't realize earlier that people were struggling so I am shifting my channel over to more teaching and less fooling around. OK, some fooling around but more teaching.
Thank you. I can't wait to watch this again and again. I have been so frustrated because I couldn't put coloured pencil to paper. Now at last I have the confidence to have a go. You are amazing.
Amazing tutorial Lori, Finally a Master colorist explain how and why using this techniques for certain things and the other like textiles, whe do another techniques to achieve this Fluffy look, i really enjoy to watch and hope you will keep going on this Direction for teaching metal, stones, crystals..... thank you so much for your time, you are an excellent teacher Lori and love to learn techniques from you xx
Thank you so much . So helpful. Would you consider having the background music not so loud . It covers up your lovely voice and it's hard to concentrate on the lesson itself
TAPERING!! At first I thought boring. Continued to watch n enjoyed the tips. Sharp point, dull point or medium point... but tapering hit home with me in coloring hair n fur! Tks!
I know this was posted some time ago, but I need to comment anyway. I can’t say how wonderful it is to finally understand. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for this great video. I am just beginning my love of this lovely craft and your site seems to be the only one that gives instructions on the strokes to achieve the look that we all want. I have saved your video for my next coloring session. Thanks so much!
Funny I should come across your videos. Was just remembering how much I love to color. Your training and inspiration is making an old joy come to a new life. Thank you.
THANK YOU SO SO MUCH for this demonstration of the 5 basic coloured pencil techniques.!!! I think this is my first time I have viewed such a detailed video so patiently demonstrated by an artistic colorist. .It is so appreciated to hear how long it takes to get the proper visual effect and where it is most suitable ... eg which stroke is best for the clouds and which stroke is suitable for illustrating fabric texture on clothing.. . You are a true "Mensch ".and a lovely artistic colorist besides having so many other creative talents ....Keep happy, healthy and have good fortune for yourself and all your loved ones. I appreciate your thorough exciting demonstrations plus the thought you love to put into all your visually appealing computerized videos .....
Don't skip the lines. If you only do circles your tooth wears down quickly. Do a few layers using the lines and then blend with the circles. You may be surprised how smooth your picture gets. Light lines.
Thank you so much, I have never seen these techniques! So Do-able, Many video’s I have seen were confusing and hard to do…Thanks this, I can do!!!! I really appreciate this type of instruction.
This is the first of your videos to enter my world. Not only are you inspiring and uplifting, your voice is charming and makes me long for the east coast! Edited to add: This isn't any of my business, but have you ever been evaluated for hypermobility? I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which is a connective tissue disorder characterized by hypermobile joints among other things. Your hands are a lot like mine. I'd like to recommend compression gloves! Your hands will hurt and swell less, and feel more stable. If you ask your primary provider to evaluate you for hypermobility, and refer you to an occupational therapist, you can be evaluated and fitted for ring splints, which will be a world of difference in your hands and arms. Especially when you color! I'd be glad to talk with you more about this if you're interested! Hypermobile Spectrum Disorders are underdiagnosed and often written off as arthritis when actually untreated connective tissue disorders can lead to osteoarthritis as a consequence of the disorder, and can be reduced by proper treatment and preventative care. They're not curable, but compression and joint bracing can be life-changing if this is something you have. Thank you again for this skill tutorial! You've really enhanced my coloring skills and I appreciate it!
Thank you so much! I’m learning everything I need to know from you! Coloring will be so much more interesting now. I find that I have to listen more than once with certain tutorials to get it in my head but that’s just how I learn.
I needed to watch this again. Will keep it in my watch later file to access quicker for reference! Thanks for making it easy to understand for my feeble brain. lol!
Everyone on RUclips gets thumbs down. No big deal. It doesn't effect anything and if someone is having a bad day and feels better hitting the thumbs down button, go for it. but thank you
Not sure if you answer questions as old as this but I am full of hope tonight. If you are a little OCD like me, and all your pencils are sharp, How would you go about making them dull, besides using it on another area to wear it down especially if you do not have another area in this color. Thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful day!! Rose (me). ps: 2 seconds after I wrote this you answered it but I did not understand what you said.
I really like this video and have watched it several times now. I'm confused, though, because of so many other youtube videos suggesting to always have a sharp point on your pencil. Particularly, while using circular motions, to have a sharp tip. Do you know if this is just a preference of the artist? Also, I see a lot of tutorial videos showing linear strokes going back and forth, rather than straight, individual lines. Are linear strokes and hatching two different things? Maybe I should practice instead of asking so many questions, lol.
Artist preference. I find if you have too sharp a tip while doing circles too much pigment is deposited into the layer. A slightly duller pencil will give you a lighter layer and it's easier to blend it out.
Alright, as an artist, this video really helps, but can I suggest that you possibly speak a little louder? At some points in this video, the music seems to overpower your voice. All in all though, great video! (:
What an excellent video! How do you round down the tips before starting to color? I’m thinking using scratch paper, but I’m sure there is a more sophisticated technique 🙃
Does the paper make a big difference? I have the same color pencils and I like to draw with pencils but coloring I never felt good with. And I tried this twice and can't come close to your amazing work
Ok morning humor.. don't spew your coffee.. I'd seen this before but was lured by the title . yes! I need techniques. So I turned it on, and it was already a few minutes in.. the part where you were doing the jacket.. still sleepy my brain kicked in just as I saw in big letters across my screen : HAt CHING and thought .. oh OK, she's punctuating this segment like the sound of a cash register completing the transaction... CHU- CHING! OR HA CHING "How cute", I mused. Close enough.. long pause.. then it sunk in.. oh yeah. Hatching.. Was i surprised..no.not really. I'm old and quickly losing gray matter. Nothing I do surprises me any more. I decided to have more coffee. I don't think I'll ever forget this. maybe you had to be there, but it struck me as pretty funny! Love Marcia in Modesto
Look on my channel page and at the top is playlists. Hit that and you will see playlists for beginners. In there I have several about pencil care and sharpening. No you dont glue the wax. I use an electric sharpener.
Love this video!!! Gave me a lot of inspiration and ideas! However, I do want to add a tip for some people. If you have carpal tunnel or cubital tunnel syndrome or arthritis of any kind in your hands, WEAR A BRACE WHEN DOING STIPPLING! Just always remember, STIPPLING CAN BE CRIPPLING! Take frequent breaks and always rest your hand for a while if you do stippling for an excessive amount of time. Thank you so much for this video!
@@mOOnpEEls I don't love Arteza. I like them but before you go for that look on Mercari.com search on colored pencils. I just bought a 48 prismacolor for 24

I thought hatching was x's?
That is cross hatching and it's more like a basket weave.
i have RA so for me its much worse doing certain things.
Music is distracting
I really couldn't concentrate on the explanation with the music over riding it
Practice practice practice makes great artist not DNA tell people that all the time, they say i wish i could draw "you can just practice"
get rid of the music - had to leave because of it
The music is annoying
Please eliminate background music its actually disturbing the listener from focusing on what you are saying.
I wish you had stayed *close up*, so we could have seen what you're doing easier..
Less music please.its too distracting.
